Maybe a better team gets a few more timely hits or timely outs against us, but it wasn't a better team, it was the Orioles, and the Twins did what they needed to get the first W in a series where they should get at least 3 of 4. After a couple early bullpen implosions I was pretty ready to criticize Rocco, but it hasn't taken him long to get Duran into big situations, and he seems to be trying to work Duffey and Thielbar back in slowly with the hopes they regain their stuff. I wonder if the bullpen hierarchy will just be much flatter going forward. I think Duran, Pagan, and Smith are the highest leverage guys right now, and I'm hopeful that Thielbar will work his way back, but we might just see whoever's arm is the freshest going in the close middle innings and medium leverage late innings. After Duran and Smith, I don't know that I really trust anyone a whole lot right now, but I think they will mostly get it done in one or two inning stints not pitching back-to-back days. The bullpen will probably continue to be this team's weak spot but I don't think it'll be a liability.

Prospect Retrospective: Jose Miranda
2wins87 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Miranda had a lot of big moments last year obviously. The 3-HR game in his first AAA game...on his birthday. I also remember a big 9th inning, 2-out, 2-run game-tying HR in Wichita (absolutely crushed). If I remember the game correctly they later walked-off in extras on a Gilberto Celestino homer. Another good note, his 2019 promotion to AA was for the final game of the season, basically just to get him onto the playoff roster in AA rather than A+. He then actually went on quite a tear in the playoffs, despite it being his first taste of AA. -
Prospect Retrospective: Jose Miranda

Probably nothing, but kind of interesting that he'll get his first career start against former Twins' prospect Tyler Wells. I wonder if he crushed against him in the Covid instructional league in 2020. Not that it would necessarily mean much two years removed, but still makes me wonder. -
Week in Review: ALL THEY DO IS WIN
2wins87 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thielbar's command has been bad, but he's actually throwing harder than ever. Hopefully he can get better control over his new velocity soon. If he does I think he'll be good again. He has actually still been missing bats and getting mostly weak contact. Duffey, on the other hand, has continued giving up hard contact all over the place, including today. I'm pretty concerned about him, and I'm also afraid he's going to get a longer leash and more high leverage opportunities because of his history of being good for Baldelli.- 16 replies

This team looks good. Probably better over the last week and a half since some point in 2019. The pitching pipeline is here. We've talked about it for a couple years now, and a lot of people said "I'll believe it when I see it." We've seen a good chunk of it now. Winder, Ober, Duran, Ryan (though only part of our pipeline for a few months). Still early for Winder but I think he's gaining confidence in his pitches and will be at least a solid starter for years to come. We're only a couple more pitchers making the transition away from having a mostly homegrown rotation and bullpen that is really good.

Jeffers is a much better defender at a much more important position than Garlick. But of course we can always just play Sanchez and Jhon Romero behind the dish. That will go great.

With 14 pitcher slots for another month, you better believe the Twins will take advantage of that (as will most other teams). Unless there are still health questions with Sanchez, Godoy will be one. No reason to make a 40-man roster decision yet, so they can keep him ready in St. Paul if another injury occurs. I think Celestino is the other. Larnach has been hitting since called up, so I think they'll want to continue getting him a lot of playing time in the majors. Garlick is only in the majors as a platoon bat, so it doesn't really matter if he ends up riding the bench most of the time. Celestino could use some regular at bats, and he probably isn't getting that with the Twins, at least at this time.

Good to see Correa have a 3 hit game, but really good seeing him finally have that hit in a clutch situation. Also really nice seeing Celestino having himself a game on both sides. Not easy for a 23-year-old to finish his development playing half of the last two seasons as a very part-time 4th outfielder role in the majors rather than playing every day in the minors. I expect it he will be sent down along with Godoy next week, but he still has lots of potential left.

Agreed. It was most definitely not a fly ball, it was a line drive that went like 350 feet. Gotta give Sano credit for hitting the snot out of the ball against their closer.

Not sure how much work he got in during the 2020 covid year, but he only got 25 innings in 2019 and 23 innings last year. He therefore has a pretty short innings limit this year and they are being very careful building him up slowly in the hopes of keeping him healthy.

Underrated moment in the walk off highlight: Luis Arraez just tossing his bat away in the on deck circle right after Buxton clobbered the ball. "Well, I don't need this anymore."

I had the same feeling watching this series. It just seems like a team that is going to disappoint, much like the Twins last year. Could definitely be reading too much into one series, but the injuries are also piling up. The Twins should absolutely have a shot at the division. I think the rest of the bats (besides Buxton) and the bullpen are coming around now. It should be a fun season.

Buxton is just amazing. There have been times this year when it just seems like the pitchers have no chance. Really excited to watch him lead the for the next half decade+.

Good win. I do have one gripe: when is Rocco going to get Winder into action again. I would have thought he would be willing to use him in a situation that he was willing to use Jax Friday. Then the starter exits after 5 with a big lead and he uses 4 relievers instead. It's been 8 days since Winder has been in a game I think. I would guess they will send him to St Paul to get stretched out as a starter when they go down to 13 pitchers. Why are they even keeping him up if he's not going to get into games?

For his total WPA, it only matters where his outing started and where it ended. The path he took to get there doesn't matter. In the end he gave up zero runs in the 9th inning so that was a positive for their chances of winning the game (up to 100% from something like 80% to 90% at the start of the inning). When he loaded the bases with 1 out the Sox were pretty likely to score so his WPA would have been negative at that point. Since he stayed in the game to clean up his own mess he still gets all the credit for the scoreless inning.

It sounds like humidors will effect offense in both ways depending on the local weather, but they are likely exacerbating how much the cool early weather is suppressing offense. This might be a desirable effect in the playoffs where close game tension is a plus, but right now it seems to be contributing to a general lack of excitement on offense. I think there are of course other continuing trends too. Pitching is inarguably better than it's ever been. Old-timers will bristle at this, but I'd also argue that defense is better than it's ever been too. The approach of hitters certainly has some role, though I think this gets over-emphasized when pitching has just gotten so good. I never thought homers were the problem. Bring back the juice!

His fastball is obviously very tough to hit. I think he was somewhere around 75% fastballs. I don't think too many were located in good places to hit, and the Twins didn't really have any success on the few that were. Credit goes to Kopech there. But the Twins should get familiar with him this year. I would hope they can find a way to hit his fastball if he continues such a fastball heavy approach.

Really only Abreu's throw was egregious. Anderson made an offline throw from very deep in the hole. It would have been close enough with an online throw that Correa was rightfully credited with a single. Abreu just threw wildly to home without any thought while the runners were just standing on 1st and 3rd. Overall their defense made me appreciate what the Twins have this year though.

I think strategically is a bit of a stretch. He pitched carefully (probably a bit overly so) to Pollock and Vaughn. He then had no choice but to go after the 8 and 9 hitters. I do think his control wasn't as bad as it might have seemed since he was able to throw strikes once he had no margin for error.

Twins Have Important Reinforcements Close
2wins87 replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Martin isn't a shortstop but he is definitely not "no glove." He'll be average or better at 2B or in the OF. I don't really believe that you're trying to be positive with this comment.- 42 replies

Twins Have Important Reinforcements Close
2wins87 replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I actually think Miranda could use a little time to get more locked in. His 25% K rate is very uncharacteristic for him, he's taken one walk all season, and he's been hitting a lot of ground balls. To his credit he sprays them around so he doesn't get shifted much and gets some through the infield. I'd like him to have a little more time against AAA pitching to get his plate approach back to where it was last year, and see him hitting more line drives and fly balls. I don't think he's far off but I honestly think he needs the time at AAA. I've been incredibly impressed with Lewis, I expected a lot more rust, but he's been driving the ball all over the park. He's missed a couple of home runs by a few feet too, so his stats could look even more impressive with warmer weather. Given how little he's played over the last few years, I think it's totally reasonable to want to see him keep it going for another month+. But if he does, I would want them to find him a regular role, probably playing mostly LF to start, but also spelling Correa and Buxton at SS and CF. Martin still has only "doubles power," and it took him a little while to get going at AA. He'll be promoted to AAA sometime around midseason or earlier I think. But he's still another stop away.- 42 replies

I'd like to take silver linings from the offense picking up, but there is too much deja vu from last year. Pick a stat, this bullpen is one of the worst in the league so far. I actually buy the fact they have the parts to make a pretty good bullpen this year, but it kind of feels like Rocco might keep leaning on the same guys until it is too late, just like last year. The front office definitely believes that relief pitchers are fickle and isn't afraid to cut bait, even with a guy like Rogers who (2020 aside) has actually been consistently good. I don't know if Rocco has the same philosophy, and it seems to manifest in the worst way, putting too little trust in new guys who look good and too much trust in the guys he knows when they don't look good.

Twins Minor League Week in Review (4/12-18)
2wins87 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I don't think handedness would be a primary or even secondary consideration for starters. Smeltzer likely would be in the mix as a reliever, especially if Thielbar continues to struggle. Moran would have an inside track for a LHRP position already being on the 40-man, but he still hasn't found any control yet this year either.- 28 replies
