  1. My opinion is that this article proves that "advanced numbers" are made up to provide excuses for bad performance. You can slap all the lipstick you want on his numbers but he is still hitting under .100. That is just awful no matter how you gauge it.
  2. I did not realize that giving any credit to Baldelli was permissible???
  3. Exactly! The only criticism seems to be that he lacks power. So what? Everyone complains that the Twins have no offense. Well, this kid exudes offense. Get him in the outfield in St. Paul and then be prepared to promote both Martin and Lewis sometime this summer. As long as Correa remains a Twin, Lewis can play 3B. And if Kepler continues his lack of hitting, Martin gets RF. Otherwise, put him in LF, insert Larnach as DH, and Use Sano and/or Kepler as trade bait this summer.
  4. I agree about Neshak. I wouldn't say that "making multiple all-star teams" is defined as "falling on hard times."
  5. In my mind, the pitch clock is putting a bandaid on a six-inch gash to stop the bleeding. Baseball needs a change to it's mindset. A home run is nice to watch but the 23 strikeouts that occurred immediately before it is boring. With the strength these young men possess in today's game, there isn't a need for swinging from the heals on every pitch.
  6. A good throw from the outfield is supposed to hit about a third of the way way to the mound. It provides the catcher with a ball that is easily handled, is usually about knee high, and provides for great positioning for the catcher to apply the tag.
  7. I am under the impression that teaching players is the job of the minor league coaching staffs and not the responsibility of the major league manager. His role is to mold what he has been given into the best possible team. Unfortunately, Rocco may have successfully done his job. The hitters (in general) are just bad. Swing for the fence and go sit down. It's home run derby or nothing!
  8. When I saw that Raya went on the IL, I figured "why not? It's the Twins.". But then I read it was for wisdom teeth, not something in the elbow or shoulder.
  9. Because baseball has given up on batting fundamentals and the desired result is home run or bust, you have more and more offensive (and I mean this in two ways) performances similar to last night. Launch angle, exit velocity, swing plane, etc have ruined the game. What ever happened to hit and run, stealing bases, bunting, and other strategies from the past that actually make people watch a game? My preferred method of watching now is to DVR the game and then watch in fast forward. If I notice the score change, I stop the DVR and rewind to see who hit a home run. Now that is exciting baseball! At least I don't have to worry about wasting three or four hours. I just waste about 45 minutes.
  10. I mentioned this in a blog about relief pitchers. Time to DFA Duffy, Stashak, and Theilbar and bring up Cano, Moran, and Minaya. And while I'm at it, DFA Garlic and call up Contreras. Breathe some life into this team.
  11. Well, to begin, I haven't quoted myself since I wrote my senior thesis at the U of M in 1969. I needed a perfect statement to complete my paper so I created it, put it in quotation marks, and cited myself in the footnotes. But I digress. Once again I watched the Twins through the eyes of the Red Sox announcers. When Sonny took the mound in the first inning, the two announcers immediately returned to the previous day's game and talked about Joe Ryan. They were falling all over themselves praising how good he looked. They went on to say that it sure looks like the Twins fleeced Tampa Bay getting Ryan and another "good pitcher" (Strotman) for the rental of Nelson Cruz for a couple months.
  12. I partially agree with you that with current technology, training facilities, nutritional guidance, and ten thousand coaches on each big league team, players should not be coddled. But I also think COVID, a shortened season, and the lockout all caused a big setback for young players and that precautions are being taken to protect team assets.
  13. And if he had pulled him after one inning, people would be complaining that Rocco should have left him in the game and that his damn computer told him to take Duran out. Rocco isn't going to win at Twins Daily no matter what he does.
  14. If God were scoring, Duran would not be charged for any of the runs. Arraez bailed on a hard hit ground ball and Garlic managed to turn a normal fly into a home run. I would swear that the foul pole is only 250 feet from home plate and not the advertised 312. However, for a brighter note, because I live in Maine, I watched the game on NESN with the Boston announcers. They were falling all over themselves trying to find the right words to say that would convey how much they were impressed by Ryan and Duran. The downside, however, was that the term "splinker" was never used. So I still don't know what it looks like.
  15. I agree. In college (a very long time ago), I participated in a lot of intramural sports. I remember one sunny Saturday, we had a fast-pitch softball game at 10AM, then a baseball game at 1:30PM, and finally a slo-pitch softball game at 4:00PM. I was so screwed up by the last game, I almost struck out on a three MPH pitch.
  16. When the shortstop has already caught the throw from the outfielder and you have a 260-pound behemoth just touching third base, why does the third base coach think it might be fun to send the runner?? Sano was motoring pretty good but he didn't stand a chance in hell of beating the throw. Maybe the third base coach thought the catcher would run away?? I did see that actually happen. I was umpiring an intermural softball game between the law school and a frat house. Alan Page was a runner on second when the batter hit a single to the outfield. The throw to home was clearly going to nail him by a wide margin. The catcher saw Page barreling down the third base line, turned to me and said "f#ck this sh#t, and went back to the backstop and waited until after Page crossed home plate.
  17. I was watching a game today and paid extra attention to the catcher. He is considered one of the worst pitcher framers in the game. He wasn't too fluid in his motions but he also did not have much to work with. How is good pitch framing defined? Is it the number of strikes called by the umpire that technology determined were not really in the strike zone? If that is a true statement, then I think there is an inherent problem. If a pitch is slightly out of the zone and the catcher pulls it into the zone and it’s called a strike, he gets credit for pith framing. But what about the catcher that is behind the plate for a pitcher that always misses by three inches instead of a half inch? He gets no credit for pitch framing. But is he really worse at it? The best pitch framers might be the catchers on teams that have the pitchers with the most control. I don’t know the answer so everyone can enlighten me.
  18. A couple things from an old fart. 1. When your 3 through 7 hitters go 0-19, don't blame the loss on your pitchers. 2. When Sano has two strikes, fast forward to the next hitter. 3. If Baldelli had used Alcala or Duran and the same result happened, would he still be a terrible manager? 4. Two games does not a season make!
  19. Can't you just have some fun with the article and play along?
  20. No memories yet. I don't even know how to pronounce his first name! Yo-Han? Ju-wan? John? Juan? None of the above?
  21. Add Polanco to the group and you probably have the best trio in Twins history ( both offensively and defensively). And I go back to when Reno Bertoia played.

  23. As a first responder (not like a paramedic or police officer or a fireman, but as a Twins Daily commenter), I am looking forward to a 90-win season, a top 10 pitching staff, multiple Gold Gloves, possible batting title, and MVP votes for several players. I am also looking forward to refilling my medicine bottles. Side effects may include delusional thinking, reduced cognitive ability, and a big smile. Happy 2022 baseball season everyone. Edit: While I was typing, dex8425 snuck in before me negating my "first responder" status
  24. Being half asleep, I only saw the words "Royce Lewis" in the header. I thought it was another article about Lewis preparing for the season. When I clicked on the link and immediately saw the link to the Saints box score, I knew it was the minor league daily recap, and the joy of baseball returned. This has been my favorite column since I joined TD and the one I always save for the last read. Yippee!!!
