  1. 17 or 22, Houston ended up with a great pitcher. We won't know about Enlow for years. Houston did it in less time. He asked what I wanted them to do to be more like Houston.....
  2. Be aggressive with promotions, trust your minor league pitchers more (a lot more) to be RPs, draft better after the top pick (when Houston played games, they ended up with a very good pitcher in round 2....the Twins have a big fat question mark with their Canadian).
  3. Maybe we should do this for the Yankees and Red Sox too! Because one data point isn't sufficient, probably. Of course, not trading for players like Dozier in 2017 might be one reason they came up a game short......You also left off that they traded for Machado in 2018, so maybe they decided their plan of not trading for great players didn't work. Now, if every team decides this....well, then there are probably market inefficiencies being created in terms of trade value.
  4. In hindsight, but you don't make decisions with hindsight.
  5. No one is asking them to spend for spends sake. We are asking them to sign better, more expensive, players. To make the team better. If they miraculously end up with too many good players, I'm sure other teams will trade for them. If they end up with a bad team, but the free agents are good, they can trade them. If the free agents all end up bad, then they aren't good at the jobs..... But no one is asking them to spend for any reason other than we are fans and want better players.
  6. They've said they don't do that, not in terms of salary. No, I don't have a link handy.
  7. I can show that your path doesn't work over decades, across multiple teams... perhaps a different, uncharted, path is needed. I've posted this before.... I'm not asking for four big signings, or even three. I'm asking them to make one multi year commitment to a guy they think is an all star quality player, and one multi year commitment to a guy they think is just below that. If they can't afford that, they probably need to be in a different business. This year, they have the same exact holes as last year, plus second base. Why? No long term commitment. So, once again, they need to rely on free agency to fill those holes. I'm not asking them to build their team around free agents or trades. I'm asking for less than that. I'm not asking them to spend above the median range, except in years they think they should go all in. I'm asking them to make a long term commitment to two players they did not draft, who are already major league players. None of that stops them from doing what you want.
  8. I can show you decades of teams with 78 wins that didn't do those things, and then didn't win playoff games, ever. Cincy. Pittsburgh. Minnesota. KC, who when they finally made trades of prospects did win it all. Decades of multiple teams who refused to trade prospects and sign any big free agents, who went on to not win. The Twins signed Jack Morris to one of the biggest deals in MLB history, after a bad year, and won the world series. Sitting around waiting for all the prospects to work.... How has that worked out for most of the mid market teams?
  9. And in 2017 Sano and Buxton were good..... And they still didn't push the chips in.
  10. No one is arguing against development being the primary route to success. No one on this site ever has. Ever.
  11. One or two cheap moves is fine. But in three years, they have emphasized value as a principle. That's fine, but not spending money on them in return is a valid response. Until they show they are serious about winning, I don't know why anyone is paying them money.
  12. I'm worried about him being bad, but not terrible. Then ten bad starts. I don't care about the 40 man spot at all. I want upside, not, well, he can always be cut, signings. YMMV, of course.
  13. Does it matter? It's a tiny bit of money. The issue is the roster spot, imo.
  14. Does this actually move the needle? And, those aren't the fallback options this year.
  15. Maybe some of us want deals that are difference makers, not bargains or low risk. Difference makers.
  16. Some of us think they can challenge, which is why we hoped for a trade of prospects for a good pitcher. Or three RP signings from a deep class. Other than Cruz, their signings are all about value.
  17. My point was, they already proved themselves in 2017. Or do we think they need to be good two years in a row? In which case, they wouldn't try next off season either
  18. That might be true. But, in 2017 the core was good. The Twins did very little in terms of adding to the team long term. They did add some short term deals, but no big names at all. So, I hope you are right, but fear you are not.
  19. People do realize that athletes don't necessary live where they play, right? Dave ST Peter literally said this is bunk, it's about years and salary.
  20. Didn't the front office say it was a mistake to bring in guys later last year, because they were unhappy? Will it be different this year?
  21. The core had a great year in 2017. The twins made no long term signings to supplement the core. All those holes exist again this year. Why do people think if the core is great this year, it will be any different? This is who they are. A team that does not spend money over the long term. Mauer was the exception.
  22. Boston, New York, Chicago, Detroit.... They seem to attract people.
  23. The Dodgers have all stars at third and short.... And other needs. I'm not sure what people expect at all. As for taking away good times, then judging players, zero Twins would pass that unreasonable test.
