  1. They have plenty of money to spend. Teams sell for record amounts every time they sell. The national TV contract just went up. Mauer is off the books, as is another 20-30MM minimum. It hurts my brain how much people defend billionaire owners, who get huge tax subsidies, in not spending on the people that actually produce the product. But then, I'm kind of on the labor side of that discussion.... And, no, that's not how rate of return works.....
  2. One thing is for sure, if they don't add talent, people can come here (and will) and say the team wasn't good enough to add to....it's really a self-fulfilling prophecy.
  3. Not worthy of being taken isn't exactly high praise.......when other players drafted those years are starring in the majors.....
  4. gotta concur here. This team is where it is because they have utterly failed at picking high with those two picks. Not just a small fail, but complete so far. Maybe Stewart bounce back....but Jay will be claimed and they will have bupkiss to show for the 6th overall pick just a few years ago.
  5. It hurts that when I sold off to buy a house I didn't sell all the NVIDIA. A lot.....oh well. As long as I don't need the money, it will bounce back most likely, over a long time....
  6. He doesn't even really talk about winning at all.....let alone try to win big. Maybe Portland will get a team, and I can care about baseball again. I'm only here for the conversation at this point.
  7. Well, no surprise there. They have done nothing to make the MLB team better on long term acquisitions in the first two years, and Sano and Buxton's play last year can't make them thrilled to bother trying this year either. I hope no one buys a single ticket, frankly.
  8. my expectation is that they continue to not add anything to the MLB roster that is beyond a year or two deal, and once again the team does not much that makes any meaningful difference.
  9. Agree with chief....they aren't hiding behind retreads, at manager or pitching coach......
  10. Wouldn't Wade or the dude they claimed this off season be cheaper than Grossman? OBP is not valuable if the rest of your roster is not good at OBP, btw......which is why teams are going all in on power right now.
  11. Of course, you have no idea what my plan is, but you've already judged it!
  12. I know this was meant to be funny, but I'd 100% back a plan where all 30 teams made a new type of post season......
  13. I found the protagonists really stupid in season 1. We stopped after about episode 2 or 3 of season 2, and just went back. So far, I'm more interested than I was before.
  14. Went back to Man in the High Castle, season 2 seems better than 1, so I'm sure we'll finish that and then onto season 3......
  15. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/retiring-mauer-and-utley-both-worthy-of-cooperstown/
  16. Damn concussions.... Good luck to him and his family! I hope he has a long, happy, retirement.
  17. If i am reading this correctly, you don't think they should try to compete next year? If true, what should they do?
  18. Maybe... But if one war was the expectation, then they had the wrong expectation..... And now they need to fill those exact holes again, since they went one year mostly.
  19. I am not sure the twins exactly gave up on Hicks. They traded him for a guy they thought was a starting catcher. That's very different than giving up on a guy.
  20. As if I suggested they do both of those things.....Darvish got hurt. The Twins supposedly bid the 2nd most for him, so clearly they thought they should sign him......
  21. I'd suggest last year they didn't spend wisely.....that was the issue (and Sano and Buxton being bad, not stars.....nothing matters if those to are bad, no amount of spending or better decision making). They went cheap, 1 year deals, and didn't sign legit players to multi year deals. Now, they need to fill those same holes again, because they literally didn't try to fill them for this year. Hopefully two things change: Buxton and Sano are stars again They FO chooses actual good players for their deals
  22. You're ignoring that players are no longer doing this.......they just aren't. You can project how you'd feel all you want, but just look at the last three or four years. 30/31 and older is now prime? On a site where people say all the time NOT to sign guys into their mid-30s, now it is a good idea? I'm confused by that sentence. In a league that is getting younger and younger? I don't see that.
  23. Well, I think you didn't read that right, Nick. One can hope on Buxton, and also not want to sign him to a long term deal......those are two very different things. Also, no way he signs an extension, super stars (or those that think they will be) who have received large bonus checks are no longer signing these types of deals. In almost every case, they've helped the team more than the player. Buxton will be a FA IN HIS PRIME YEARS. Why is he signing that away? For those saying "patience"....you do realize the Twins control his rights for only a few more years, right? If he's ok this year (which would be huge progress alas), then great...how many great years are they really getting for this patience? If you believe in Buxton and/or Sano, you should want them to be going for it this year or next year, because one or both of them will be gone in three or so years....
  24. because it is often used as an excuse not to get better, in the name of efficiency over effectiveness. If a team is 1 player away, and that player costs more $/WAR than is "right", they should or should not sign him? Because I don't care if they win 84 games efficiently, nor do most fans. And, let's be honest, you have a bias for capital over labor. That's cool, but not everyone shares that bias. The value of teams is rising faster than payrolls are, and I'm not cool with that. Old, formerly interesting, people on the east coast might be, but I don't think everyone shares James' opinion.
