  1. When people say competition, what do you mean? Like, how they play in spring games?
  2. It didn't help that Iron Fist was so bad the first year. Also, I admit, even as a fantasy / sci fi guy, that I have super hero fatigue. If you can't lose, I'm not sure where the drama is.....if it isn't about being a hero, and about other stuff, then why bother with the hero stuff?
  3. Or, he just played more CF and played better defense in RF last year, than the year before.....He was league median offensively for CF, probably better, since Harper, Pham, and a few others played a couple games in CF, skewing the rankings. So, I'm not sure it is a WAR flaw, so much as he was used differently and played better defense. Neither of which is predictive.....
  4. The Twins had zero SP in the top 25 of fangraphs' version of WAR.....Berrios was 27, Gibson 32, and ODO 43 among those pitching at least 90 innings last year.
  5. BTW....no one on this site or anywhere else is denying that home grown talent is the best way to go. Some of us are arguing its not the only way to go. Nor are we arguing that the whole rotation, INF, OF, RP corps, whatever strawman people want to put up, should be FAs or trades. No one is making that argument. Some of us are arguing that ignoring some all the channels other than home grown won't really work. And no, 1 year deals is not not ignoring FA, imo. And, if the FO really tried to sign Darvish, they agree.
  6. I love how Carole and nick liked my post as I completely changed it......
  7. Kepler put up 2.6 WAR last year, and people aren't sure he should be playing, but they love the Cron signing. My head hurts.
  8. I'd rather just sign some FA RPs. So, probably nothing. but, if the FO thinks Cano can play 2B for a few more years and be a top DH after that (or 1B), then I wouldn't kill them for dealing for him. Gordon, Gonsalves, Austin, Kepler should do it, I'd think.
  9. Overwhelmingly is not completely. Nor am I saying they have to sign the top FA.....how about not the cheap, 1 year types? How about aiming somewhat higher than that? Houston, Boston, NYY.....they are not totally home grown. Or the Cubs. Or likely playoff team Philly. It's fine if you all want to wait on prospects, but then trade off every veteran. Because this minor league system isn't close to producing MLB help right now. The odds of a prospect working out are even lower than a FA working out, aren't they? Like, 1 in how many tens or hundreds? I keep loving how people are ripping the Darvish deal, while at the same time praising the FO for being 2nd highest bidders. Clearly the FO disagrees, or they weren't really trying for Davish.
  10. Many of us predicted Santana would be a non factor. That wasn't all that hard to see. Not one FA move was a needle mover. None was for more than 2 years. So while they were fine, none were truly meaningful, even if they had worked out. Do you really think either Lewis or Kiriiloff will be here in the next year? That seems, I'm going to say, unlikely.
  11. JJ: If MLB expands, those 2 cities should be: ________ Keith Law: If MLB expands, they should put part of the expansion fees into building stadiums in the new markets. Portland, OR, and Austin have long been the two best answers to that question, but I’d bet neither electorate would support public funding for a stadium.
  12. so, punt on having another great pitcher for how many more years? Which guy is coming that you have lots of confidence in? Because most of the ranking sites love their hitting a lot more than pitching. houston traded for 2. The yankees are about to sign another FA after trading for one. boston? trades and FAs. the Angels signed the best international one available. Philly? FA and early picks. Twins have decided not to use high picks on a SP with this FO so far, do you think that will change? If so, why would you think that? Most of the rest of the league doesn't have great starters, that's why they cost so much in money or trade.
  13. how do you plan to get great pitching, if you won't trade top prospects, or sign guys to long term deals?
  14. Other than you could get actual MLB value out of him more likely, as opposed to continuing to hope. I don't know what I'd do in this particular case, but this team, and other teams, try so hard to make starters out of guys that will never be that, they lose out on a lot of good RPs, imo. Oh, and those players lose out on money, since they have failed careers.
  15. you'd rather have 6 years of an unknown commodity, than 3 of one of the best pitchers on the planet? And, others won't sign SP to long term deals, where, exactly, do people expect to find great pitchers?
  16. If they tender Grossman, I will seriously question why they have their jobs. He does one thing well, and it isn't all that valuable. And, it is cancelled out by how terrible he is in the field. It would make no sense at all to keep him around.
  17. From a news post today.... Today looks like a big day in the drive for major league baseball in our town, as the Portland Diamond Project is set to announce that it's secured land rights for a stadium site--rumored to be the Port of Portland's Terminal Two along NW Front Avenue, a mile or so downriver from the Fremont Bridge. Nice setting, underused expanse, but it's a mile or more away from MAX. Maybe the Frog Ferry could have a stop there
  18. According to one of the fangraphs writers, some teams don't think you don't need a left handed starter at all. Advanced teams
  19. He was not a good starter in the minors. He's finally succeeding, and people want to change that. I don't agree.
  20. my thought on Astudillo.......give him a shot to prove us right or wrong. That is what other teams seem to do, trust results and see if they stick.
  21. If you need a LHP starter for some reason, you have Mejia.....I wouldn't move Rogers in a million years. He's doing what he should be.
