  1. I don't think people realize the bar for good performance in a bullpen pitcher. Putting up a 4 ERA is not impressive.
  2. Interesting to see a major league umpire essentially say that they can't tell where the ball crosses the plate and have to rely on the catcher to make a call.
  3. Then Arcia gets the boot. Sano would be fine in RF.
  4. Great article. I appreciate the effort and the presentation. It is interesting trying to synthesize what I've read about Suzuki's pitch framing and why it doesn't match perception. From what I've read he's bad at framing the low strike. He's also the top catcher at blocking pitches in the dirt and those are probably interrelated. The low strike that Suzuki is not getting called has only recently been called due to video umpire feedback. When Suzuki was being instructed on catching he was probably told that was a ball and the most important thing was to make sure it was caught. He may be able to alter his approach with the right coaching.
  5. I'm so tired of Spring Training auditions. Spring Training is a terrible time to judge ballplayers. Hicks has flopped twice out of the gate but "won" the job in Spring Training.
  6. Sano has been compared to Miguel Cabrera since he was 16. Cabrera came up and played RF because Mike Lowell was established at 3B. Eventually Lowell was traded and Cabrera went to 3B. Then when Cabrera was traded to Detroit he moved to 1B. Sano could follow the same path, hopefully without the trade to Detroit.
  7. Would trade Kohl Stewart for an ace (Hamels) now. Like others have said there is a lot of hype and not a lot of results yet.
  8. "Hart is the President of Baseball Operations" This is simply title inflation. They could call him the Grand Poobah of Baseball Decisions but he'd be doing a GM job
  9. They're less than one standard deviation below average over a small sample
  10. Over the same time period Josmil Pinto - signed 2006 Oswaldo Arcia - signed 2007 Danny Santana - signed 2007 Miguel Sano - signed 2009 Jorge Polanco - signed 2009 Max Kepler - signed 2009 Kennys Vargas - signed 2009
  11. Sometimes I wonder if we're expecting too much from the MLB draft. A large plurality of MLB players are international signs. You can do a great job with player development by scouting well internationally and miss on all of your draft picks.
  12. They need to use some of these C+/C prospects in trades as they are loaded with them. They can't all make it on the roster so they might as well try to get something of value for them.
  13. They gave Kurt Suzuki a reasonable raise also.
  14. Imagine being able to sign James Shields 5 years ago for this money. This is a bargain.
  15. It is bizzare that they won't even call Colby Rasmus.
  16. I think they put Milone in the bullpen and send May or Meyer to AAA to keep them stretched out as a starter.
  17. Pitching in the 1960s you needed an ERA under 3 to have a really good season.
  18. Luis Tiant is the best pitcher on that ballot
  19. There are four ballot slots. Tony is not one of the four best choices on this ballot. Minnie Minoso should get in first, for example.
  20. Can they trade Colabello for him instead of paying a posting fee?
  21. Doesn't it complicate the ability to sign a free agent pitcher if you don't have a pitching coach?
  22. I can see Schafer having up to 4 more seasons being done at 31 or I can see him having a knee injury and never seeing much of the big leagues again. He's valuable depth at the moment.
  23. Decent 4th outfielder. No reason to cut him since he's currently the 2nd best option on the roster. They need to find two more outfielders to move him to a more appropriate role.
  24. I don't think Rosario has earned himself anything except a look-see for a promotion to AAA. A hot month in a league about the same level as AA doesn't show me enough. Going with Aaron Hicks to start the season for the third time should get Terry Ryan fired. There is plenty of room for two free agent outfielders on the roster and in the payroll. There is actually less room in the rotation than there is in the outfield. Only 40% of the rotation slots are up for grabs versus 60% of the outfield.
