    Time to cut the veterans who won't be here next year (looking at you, Billy Hamilton) and play the rookies (even if they do go 1 for 9).

    I am actually impressed by the development and coaching staff in the minor leagues. They've turned late round pitchers like Ober and Varland into potentially useful major leaguers. I think they're starving the pipeline by not giving it some high-end talent to develop. They don't sign any Latin American pitchers as amateur free agents. They rarely use top draft picks on pitchers and they don't draft enough pitchers. They also tend to go after injured pitchers in the draft (Canterino, Prielipp) to get value. The pitchers they sign as free agents are "value" picks out of the bargain bin - innings-eater starting pitchers for the rotation and minimum salaried minor league free agents for the bullpen.

    The team has their back against the wall. Teams with a 4 game lead can afford to let a win go by, this team can't.

    I didn't think Peguero was eligible since he can play winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Feels like a missed opportunity for pitchers.

    Or spend 5 minutes trashing Randy Bush. That speech of Gladden's would be considered a train wreck if it was spontaneous. It's even worse knowing he had a year to practice a speech (and years of experience on the radio) and that's what he came up with.

    Most likely. There are scenarios where he is the opening day SS due to a series of unfortunate events.

    I would be surprised if Severino gets selected in the Rule 5 draft. He can hit but his bat is not MLB ready yet and he is not a great fielder. Rule 5 draft picks tend to be pitchers who teams can stick in the bullpen or athletes who are strong fielders.

    Pulling Bundy after 4 innings IS using him effectively. He has an ERA of 4.68 while averaging 4 innings a start. Do you really want to push him through the lineup another time? I'd rather use the bullpen. Bundy's value to the Twins has been his ability to take the ball every 5th day and eat some innings. However, his strikeout rates are below average, his ERA+ is 82 and his WAR to date is 0.0. He's not a good pitcher.

    One unexpected beneficiary of a pitch clock is the catcher. Less time sitting in a squat means fresher legs in September. Don't believe me? Next time while you're watching a game try squatting as much as your home team's catcher. By the time the 8th inning rolls around you'll wish the game was over.

    I think the rotation will be Ober on Friday, Varland and Winder for Saturday's doubleheader, Ryan on Sunday, Gray on Monday. It would be nice to have Buxton and Polanco back for the Cleveland series, even if they aren't 100%.

    I am pretty sure Cotton will get cut but we might see Varland go back to AAA for Ober's debut.

    Interesting that these sentiments were posted back to back. I tend to agree with the latter. If I didn't enjoy watching the team win I think I'd shut it off for good. That's what I've done with pretty much every other sport besides baseball.

    In his previous 9 innings he allowed 9 runs. Last night was a good night and his health is actually quite encouraging, especially compared to the rest of the rotation.

    I think no-hitters are overrated in general. They're kind of neat, like when a batter hits for the cycle, but ignoring walks makes them less meaningful. Nobody would call a game where a pitcher has a 3 hit, no walk shutout a "no walker" and nobody tracks how many 0-walk complete games occurred in history. Ryan had allowed 2 baserunners, the perfect game was not in play and he wasn't going to get to pitch 2 more innings. It's a team sport, why not let someone else try to finish the no-hitter.

    Duran was warm? I was only watching on the Gamecast on my phone. Why didn't he let Duran get the 9th for an all-rookie combined no-hitter?

    That's the best situation but even that decision depends on the batter (can they bunt? are they the most likely to get a hit? will the batter get intentionally walked?). You wouldn't want Arraez to bunt in that situation because a single scores the runner.

    They may need to change players to change the health of players. For example, I don't know if Kirilloff or Ober will ever be healthy for a full season. I know Buxton won't be healthy for a full season.

    Is this a real problem? I haven't noticed this at all.

    Better question - why are they playing Sheffield at 2B when they could have promoted Edouard Julien?

    No reason to know how to do either of those now. They just changed the rules to make it easier for pull-happy hitters.
