  1. Wins are a great stat for teams. They belong in the standings, not in individual pitcher statistics. We don't assign wins to anyone else on the team.
  2. I agree with this. It's also important to note that not all OPS is equal. It's better to lose power and maintain OBP against same-sided pitchers than the other way around. If you aren't making outs then you can get a more productive hitter to the plate.
  3. That's a problem. If they can't practice batting against lefties they'll never get better. They pay a guy to be the bullpen catcher. There have to be some unemployed lefthanded pitchers they can hire to throw batting practice.
  4. I am assuming Funderburk. Do they want three lefthanded relievers in the bullpen?
  5. If a lefthanded batter can't hit lefty pitching in practice they won't be able to hit it in games. They get a lot more reps in practice.
  6. Mets are adding Tyler Jay to the roster. Yes, the one who never stayed healthy enough to pay off on the Twins selection of him in the first round of the draft. Mets To Select Tyler Jay - MLB Trade Rumors
  7. I am going to guess he is still here when Thielbar and Staumont return (Funderburk and Sands to AAA).

  9. Ted Williams Looks Back | Baseball Hall of Fame
  10. Montgomery Burns platooned and he's about as old school as they come
  11. Gibson is 36 and his past 3 seasons posted an ERA+ of 86, 79 and 82 (WAR of 0.9, 0.4 and 0.3). You must not think much of Louie Varland.
  12. Can't tell the players without a program
  13. No, he pitched 3/31 and 4/2 with an off day in between. The innings leader is Duarte with 4 innings over 9 days. How can the bullpen be depleted with everyone pitching 4 or fewer innings over 9 days?
  14. Try to find a good, free agent starting pitcher for 1 year $13.25M. Here's this list who signed for that (or less) this offseason: Kyle Gibson Lance Lynn Luis Severino Wade Miley Jakob Junis Martin Perez James Paxton Alex Wood Are any of them better than Louie Varland? Good free agent pitchers cost $20M+ a season over multiple seasons.
  15. Saints are having a $4 ticket flash sale for April and May games.
  16. Has anyone even pitched back-to-back days so far? It feels like things have been spread out much better due to the depth.
  17. Severino is now 0-13 with 4 BB and 7K on the year. Not a great start.
  18. Innings in games are not the majority of pitches they will throw during a year. Most pitches are thrown in practice. Fatigue does lead to bad mechanics which leads to arm injuries. I think we will continue to see pitchers get injured because velocity gets batters out. A ligament replacement is almost a rite of passage for a major league pitcher.
  19. Having a bad team tanks attendance starting around the trade deadline. 100 wins is definitely better than 87 wins for attendance but the returns are diminishing. I understand why they want to avoid downside more than they want to try for upside. Part of that is just human nature (loss aversion).
  20. And then he pinch-hit with a guy who thought his best option was to bunt with 2 out and the bases loaded. That's a move with at best a 20% chance of success. Julien has a .245 career OBP vs LHP which gives better odds than a bases loaded 2 out bunt.
  21. I'm not sure if it does compared to an 87 win team. Their attendance goes down as much as 500,000 fans when they're bad. If they're in a pennant race they get 10,000 more fans for each September game. If they're not then people watch Vikings training camp.
  22. It also lets opposing managers know they can take Julien out of the rest of the game if they have a lefty reliever face him in the 4th inning. Rocco got the better platoon matchup once but gave it away the next two times through the lineup. Some teams only have one lefty reliever. If that happens, keep Julien in the game knowing he will only face the lefty reliever once.
  23. It's certainly not a move I'd burn a pinch hitter to make in the 4th inning. What's the reduced run expectancy of not having Julien in the lineup for the rest of the game? It has to be higher than the run expectancy of a bases loaded bunt in that situation. It would be a more defensible move if they had Julien bunt there. He's not a great hitter against lefties, he's in the lefthanded batter's box (two steps closer to 1B for the throw) and they don't lose him for the rest of the game. I am glad Rocco wasn't happy with that decision.
