  1. The dropoff from Sonny Gray to Louie Varland has been very steep.
  2. It's probably a good thing that they negotiated a TV deal with a channel nobody has access to. This is not the team to roll out to a broad audience.
  3. Pitching decent in 17 of 32 starts is not solid, it's pretty bad. That means half your starts your team is trying to overcome the starting pitcher giving the game away. He had a 2022 season that was basically no value at all and he was paid $11M to do it.
  4. Would you really have given Berrios a huge contract extension after his -0.6 WAR 2022 when he led the league in both hits and earned runs allowed?
  5. Conversely, then they should get credit for what actually DID happen. Berrios was awful the next year, tanking his trade value at the next season's deadline and making it unlikely the Twins would tender a qualifying offer. Toronto is only getting any value back from that trade because they were able to negotiate an extension. If Berrios had gone to free agency the Twins would have been the clear winners just by not having to pay for Berrios that following season.
  6. This is correct. Plus, you would need to assess whether the coaches and players can adjust to a new philosophy if the front office decides to make a change in philosophy. Some players were acquired because they fit the philosophy. Good coaches change the philosophy to fit the players.
  7. You have more confidence than I have that these batters can successfully execute a bunt.
  8. Among pitchers age 30 and younger Berrios is one of the top 10 career performers. Pitcher WAR Alcantara 20.3 Fried 19.2 Gallen 17.7 Bieber 17.6 Marquez 15.9 Ohtani 15.1 Webb 14.8 Berrios 14.4 Burnes 14.3 Buehler 13.5
  9. Not mentioned in the article: Toronto gained the ability to negotiate with Berrios and sign him to a long-term contract. Minnesota lost the ability to offer Berrios a qualifying offer and recoup a 1st round pick.
  10. So he's adding about 5 pitches per start. Should be ready for an actual starter's workload by start 10. He has a sparkly ERA but his walk rate is awful.
  11. You deaden the ball to decrease the number of HR. More balls in play, run scoring kept in check by reducing the rate of HR/hit. That's the choice. Deaden the ball or the Hall of Fame pitcher becomes extinct.
  12. That explains why MLB batting averages are at all-time lows, because the hitters have adjusted so well.
  13. I'm suggesting that innings aren't the cause of the injuries. Maximizing velocity and spin is causing injuries. The training to maximize velocity and spin happens during practice, not during games. I suppose they can try to keep their pitchers from getting injured by never pitching them but that seems counterproductive when the whole point is to find someone who can throw 6 innings. Right now, MLB isn't developing starting pitchers and they're still having loads of injuries.
  14. I think moving their offense up to the below average level that Austin Martin has produced would be an improvement over their terrible performance so far but it isn't going to win a pennant.
  15. Is this whole argument that the team would be better off if the Pohlads had put an additional $2.75M in their pockets?
  16. Yes, I and I was trying to put it in context that league batting average is currently the lowest it has been since the 1968 "Year of the Pitcher". Since the American League started in 1901 the league batting average has only been lower than 2024 (so far) twice - 1968 and 1908. April has been one of the most anemic months for hitting in the history of MLB.
  17. I'll believe in Festa as a starter if he can pitch into the 6th inning in AAA. Right now he goes 4 innings and that's it for the day.
  18. They have to stretch Festa out past 60 pitches if he is going to have any chance to compete for a spot in the rotation this season.
