So...What Do the Twins Do With Caleb Thielbar?
DJL44 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
His fastball movement and location is not the same and he's working with the pitching coaches to get it back. He's not injured. I think it is fixable but the question is how long.- 19 replies

Local Contrarian Struggles to Hate Royce Lewis

Good. Getting Julien time at 1B should also be part of that plan.

I would love Kikuchi if they would take Paddack in return as part of the package.

I don't think that is the plan or they would have Brooks Lee actually playing 2B in the minor leagues. I wouldn't want to bring up a rookie to start in the majors at a position they have never played in the minors at all. Lee would also have to be really good to be a better option than Willi Castro. Castro has been very good at 2B. There really aren't that many open spots on the roster. Farmer is barely getting any playing time.

They released Castillo to bring Varland up for the spot start. They added Jackson because they needed another warm body. They could have re-signed Castillo and added him back (he's a free agent) but chose not to. I expect them to fill that 40th roster spot with a waiver claim soon.

Actually, the metrics show Vazquez as one of the top defensive catchers in baseball, good enough to keep him around replacement level despite his lousy bat.

And yet they're basically league average in allowing stolen bases and 20th in stealing bases. It's not a big part of their game but that's true for most MLB teams.

Oh, and last season MLB stole 0.72 bases per game. The Twins are pretty much average at controlling the running game. Tampa is 6th in steals per game at 0.96.

I ran the numbers after today. Jeffers is at 19% CS% and Vazquez is 21% - league average is 22%. If Jeffers throws out his next baserunner they're even. Jeffers has allowed 0.066 stolen bases per inning (0.6 per 9 innings) and Vazquez is at 0.089 stolen bases per inning (0.8 per 9 innings).

I was able to watch the Saints game yesterday. The most exciting thing about Lee hitting three doubles is he did it against lefthanded pitching. He hit two off the starter Hurter and one off the reliever Lucas. In contrast, Wallner looked completely lost against Hurter and missed a center cut fastball from Lucas. There is an easy way to get Wallner out right now - use a lefthanded pitcher. Lee looked very locked in as a RHB. Unfortunately, he looked like he had trouble making adjustments as a switch hitter during the game and gave away his last at-bat from the left side of the plate. Switch hitting is hard and it will slow down his development but the payoff should be worth the investment.

Utility players and second basemen don't make the big bucks. Offer him a 3 year $18M deal and see if he accepts. He's probably worth $30-40M over the next 3 seasons.

It is against AAA pitchers. I've been watching the game today and Lee has hit Toledo's lefty starter quite well. Wallner, on the other hand, looks completely lost.

He has a 600 OPS in the minors against LHP. The Twins aren't going to play him every day in the big leagues until he can hit lefties. If he came up to play 2B right now they would platoon him with Kyle Farmer.

Possibly. Ruth was better compared to his competition but his competition was segregated. Mays was the greatest living ballplayer until yesterday. Now I think that has to be Barry Bonds.

0-18 with 3 walks is remarkably bad for a pinch-hitter. If that's your pinch hitter you're better off not pinch-hitting.

Nice job by the Twins and the rain getting Tampa to empty their bullpen (used 7 relief pitchers in the game).
