    It would be awesome if the Twins had 9 players better than Willi Castro. They clearly don't.

    The team currently has a big gaping hole at DH. Rather than filling that hole with whatever mediocre bat they can find in free agency I'd like to see them acquire someone who is good at fielding the ball and push one of their lesser defenders to DH.

    Adding the DH to the National League changed first base expectations. There are only so many elite bats who you want to hide on defense. Now that you can use 15 more players at DH the player at 1B has to be able to field the position.

    MLB batting average was .265 in 1979. It's .243 now. The highest batting average of any team in 2024 was .263. The Twins aren't going to hit 15 points higher than the best team in baseball. To assemble a team that hits .280 in 2024 you would need to have every player better than the top 5 in batting average at their position. 5th best batting average at each position in 2024: 1B Yandy Diaz .281 (Miranda hit .284 FWIW) 2B Brendan Donovan .278 SS Corey Seager .278 3B Rafael Devers .272 LF Lourdes Gurriel .279 CF Julio Rodriguez .273 RF Fernando Tatis Jr .276 C Salvador Perez .271 DH Marcell Ozuna .302 So, the Twins just need to acquire an All-Star caliber bat at every position (with a $130M budget) and the team can hit .280. Simple.

    I agree that they have a lot of options to help the back end of the pen. The one guy listed who could help close games is Prielipp. He could potentially be one of their top 4 relievers.

    They're intending to sell the team. Someone else mentioned that a depreciation tax break for new team owners is going away after 2026. Due to changes in TV broadcasting and fan demographics, MLB Revenue looks flat for the foreseeable future. The asset is no longer appreciating and it's time to sell.

    Defense tends to peak younger than offense. Martin is 26 next season. Martin does not have the arm to play 3B or SS which means he will never duplicate Castro's performance at those positions. He has had a lot of reps at 2B and is still pretty bad. I doubt he will improve much at 2B. He has the speed to play LF/CF but has had fewer reps at those positions. The big problem with his performance in the outfield is his reaction to the ball off the bat is the worst in the league. A few thousand reps taking fly balls should be able to improve that but he's not likely to be good. If Martin's development in the field and at the plate progress at the rate you would expect then he could be a platoon LF next season with Larnach. That's a long way from replacing Willi Castro. It would take a mix of Martin, Keirsey and Lee to replace Castro. That's 3 roster spots to do what Castro does.

    Helman could probably replace what the Twins got from Kyle Farmer in 2024 at a fraction of the cost. The problem is Farmer was not particularly valuable in 2024 so getting that level of production is not going to help them win games.

    Willi Castro is a much, much better defensive player than Austin Martin. Martin is a bad outfielder and a bad second baseman.

    I don't think it will take a market rate deal to get Castro extended but it's got to be closer to market rate than 3 years $15M. 6/8/9 with an 10M option / 1M buyout for the 4th season could be enough.

    Polanco can barely play 2B now and his days at 3B and SS should be over.

    Brooks Lee is probably ahead of Helman as the second utility infielder, but Lee isn't much of an outfielder (too slow). The Twins will want Lee playing every day in MLB or AAA, but they'll be fine with letting Helman ride the bench like they were with Farmer. Kyle Farmer might be available on a minor league deal. The waiver wire is a good place to acquire utility players as we saw with Willi Castro. Will Holland is another internal possibility for a utility player. It is hard to tell if he took a huge step forward last season before he was injured or if it was just a small sample size mirage.

    This is true. They might as well say Yunior Severino can take his place or Diego Castillo or Aaron Sabato.

    The Twins need more players like Willi Castro - solid defender with speed on the bases. If they trade him, they will have zero players like Willi Castro and the biggest hole on the roster will be the need for players like Willi Castro.

    I think Kyle Farmer should have been #1 on the list. He was so bad his own grandmother was admonishing him.

    The lack of speed is hurting them on the basepaths and on defense.

    That was an expensive star for top prospects deal. They didn't trade him with 3 years of cost control remaining. I could see the Twins trading Ryan or Ober after the 2026 season. Since we're talking about the White Sox, Garrett Crochet is one of the few cheap ace pitchers who might be available in trade. Luis Robert is expensive but is actually a great fit for the Twins roster (RH hitting outfielder who can field). Adding those two players would be a blockbuster that could make the Twins a contender. The Twins would need to clear $15M and send one of their own big talents (Lewis, Lee, Jenkins, Rodriguez) in return. That's a gutsy trade, especially within the division. That's the kind of risk that gets someone fired if it doesn't work out.

    Does that happen? Do teams trade young, cheap pitching for other young, cheap pitching? Do you trust that the Twins would get the better end of the trade? The A's and Rays trade expensive for cheap. The Yankees and Dodgers trade for talent and don't worry about the cost. Challenge trades of my cheap starting pitcher for your cheap starting pitcher are really rare. Those are the trades that get one of the two general managers making the deal fired.
