Injuries Have Created Major Cracks in the Twins Defense
DJL44 replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Royce Lewis is clearly a 60 day IL candidate. Would they add Keirsey to the 40 man and give him his debut or go with someone they feel comfortable cutting like Diego Castillo?- 32 replies

With the sudden drop in speed for Margot it's possible he is also injured.- 32 replies

How good was his slider in the 5th inning? We'll never know because they won't let him pitch into the 5th inning.

FYI - Cubs are giving away a cheap 1B who looks about as good as Jose Miranda

How Much More Time Does Carlos Santana Have?
DJL44 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He still needs to go, giving the playing time to Larnach, Wallner and Kirilloff will be more important in August and September. -

I'm 100% in favor of this. Max goes for the best prospects available at the deadline. -
How Much More Time Does Carlos Santana Have?
DJL44 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I checked, my take holds up - signing Santana prevented them from signing someone better. Brandon Belt - who outhit every Twin except Royce Lewis in 2023 - is sitting at home waiting for someone to give him a job. Jose Miranda is showing that he's a better option as a RH platoon bat at 1B. Even if we assume a bounce back for Santana from terrible to mediocre. this is a simple move to make. Bench him until they can work out a contract with Belt and then release him. Could be worse, see the Astros and Jose Abreu. -
Twins Lack Starting Pitching Depth Behind Louie Varland
DJL44 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He has a 5.20 ERA in AAA since the beginning of 2023 which would project to > 6 in the big leagues. It would likely be a long, drawn-out story of failure.- 78 replies

With hindsight, they should have put more emphasis on the going forward part of the trade.

It appears that 2024 has seen another drop in offense around the league. Batting average is down. The rates of 2B and HR are also down. K rates are steady. Pitching velocity usually affects the oldest players the most. Judging just by age I think Willi Castro is the best bet to bounce back from his early hitting woes.

We will see how good 36-year-old Seth Lugo is at the end of his contract but he has been a good signing for Kansas City so far. For me, the answer was to bring back Sonny Gray. It is telling how he specifically mentioned the Cardinals organization as a draw to sign there as a free agent.

That, and adjust at the deadline if needed. It's not a plan with a high likelihood of success. I also don't think the dollars they spent on the veterans at other positions were enough to actually bring in a good starting pitcher. Those guys cost closer to $100M in long-term commitment and they don't have the stomach for it. Given the fact that they didn't even give the young, cheap players team friendly contract extensions I don't see this team spending any future money until their TV broadcasting revenue is solved for the long term. Then they're morons who don't understand anything about hedging a bet and shouldn't be entrusted to run a baseball organization. Fire them before they make trades at the deadline and hire someone who knows how to manage risk. It would be gross incompetence to expect DeSclafani to put together a completely healthy season at this point in his career.

He's been dealing with injuries for two seasons and averaged 12.5 starts and 60 innings pitched over those two seasons. Why would they expect him to go from providing 12 starts a season to 35 starts? They had to expect him to spend time on the injured list this season. They were just hoping it wasn't the entire season. Likewise, if they're expecting 35 starts from Paddack this season they're fools.

I agree that if they're not good after trying SWR and Paddack the cupboard is bare and they need to look at trades but the trades would be selling rather than buying at that point. With the poor performance of their short-timer veterans I'm not sure if the Twins have much to sell that anyone else would want. There's no Nelson Cruz to trade for the next Joe Ryan. Getting Max Kepler going is a priority.

If anyone in the Twins front office actually believed DeSclafani would take 20% of the starts this season they should be fired. I think they acquired him to be 10% of the rotation.

They seem to do well on this every other year and bomb out entirely the next season (Logan Morrison). Can't they roll sevens instead of snake eyes and box cars? You would expect one or two of these veterans to go bust but not ALL of them.

He was giving up a lot of home runs when he threw 94 and the trend was getting worse rather than better. Adding movement, rather than velocity, is probably the right answer if he wants to stay in the rotation. Movement pitches are going to be harder to throw for strikes. Varland seems to have stuff that plays up in a relief role where the extra velocity makes up for his tendency to miss his spots.
