    I have advocated taking another team's castoff major league starters and trying them in the bullpen. Cole Irvin isn't a bad gamble but it helps to be able to start these guys in AAA to give them time to see if adding velocity in the bullpen actually helps their stuff. They won't be immediately successful in relief.

    If players want to get big league playing time, they need to be good enough to earn it. No scholarships based on draft status. The Twins are trying to win baseball games. They don't exist solely to help develop Austin Martin to his fullest potential.

    This is true, and I'm not sure any front office is really that good at it. The best way to have a great bullpen is to develop more young pitching than you have room for in the rotation. There probably isn't anything they could do better. Relievers are volatile and tend to have short runs of effectiveness before they get injured or the league figures them out.

    There are 60 catchers on MLB rosters, not 30. The median hitting catcher would be #30, not #16. Your analysis would be like comparing starting pitchers and picking #40 as the "median" starting pitcher.

    Willi Castro is not in the lineup until one player gets hurt. Instead of Wallner + Lewis (7 WAR) you have Castro + Martin (3 WAR) instead of Lee and Martin (0 WAR). Castro gives a net +3 WAR because someone is ALWAYS hurt on an MLB roster. Plus, if one of your AAA subs is actually decent but blocked you can pull them up and move Castro to a different position. That sub would tally the 1 WAR but Castro is the player who enabled that move instead of grabbing the -1 WAR player from Double-A.

    Positional flexibility gives them more depth to pick from. If someone gets injured they can pick from 6 different position players in the minor leagues to replace that player on the bench with Castro moving to the injured player's position. I believe there was part of last season where Buxton, Keirsey and Rodriguez were all injured at the same time but the Twins didn't have to reach down to AA to call up a centerfielder because Castro is on the roster. I think it happened again later in the season when Correa and Lee were both hurt at the same time and they used Castro at SS. I will agree that Castro has the most value when he's the 10th player on your roster and is only playing every day because he is filling in for an injured/resting starter.

    Castro is a free agent after 2025. Unless the Twins give him a contract extension this offseason there is no "beyond that" to worry about.

    I don't think there is much downside to giving him a chance in the rotation. If he struggles, move him back to the bullpen.

    There is a difference between "offseason" replacement value where there are tons of freely available players ready to fill in the margins of your roster and "in-season" replacement value where you are limited to your own organization or whoever gets dumped on the waiver wire. You are right that having someone like Castro allows for more in-season flexibility when determining who gets called up in the Twins organization. That has value that is not captured in WAR.

    They need either a RH hitting 4th outfielder OR they need a second baseman. Castro can move to the other spot. If they get both they can start their players with huge question marks (Julien, Martin, Lee) in the minors and see which ones produce. I don't see Vazquez getting moved until the trade deadline when half his salary is paid down. They don't have any pitchers I would count on to fill in for Ryan, Lopez or Ober. They have some options who could take Paddack's spot without much drop-off (if any). I agree that the bullpen needs a good lefty.

    The Pohlads have quite a few properties in Minneapolis. Those properties are more valuable with the Twins in Minneapolis so I expect they will want to sell to a buyer interested in keeping the team in Minnesota.

    This is not how major league teams play baseball in 2024. The league leader in sacrifice bunts was the Diamondbacks with 34. That's one bunt every 5 games. League average is 15 sacs, one every 10 games.

    They should probably send Dobnak to Wichita. He's taking innings in St. Paul that would be better used on their starting pitcher prospects (Festa, Morris, Raya, Matthews, Headrick, Adams, Lewis).

    Profar is a great fit for the Twins but I'm not sure they have any budget space to acquire him. Jesse Winker hit .199 for the Brewers in 2023 and .243 for the Mets this year. He's a pretty volatile batter and a below average fielder. He doesn't add anything.

    I'm sure the twins could assemble a lineup that is 16 points above league average. That team would hit ..260, not .280. You can't defy a league-wide trend by finding "the right" players.

    Miranda improved at 1B to mediocre but his success rate at 3B was just as poor as 2023.     No, Miranda grades out much better defensively at 1B than he does at 3B and Lewis grades better than Miranda at 3B. Your idea would downgrade the defense at both positions compared to playing Lewis at 3B and Miranda at 1B.
