    The work ethic is nice to have but these two are on the roster because each of them can do something that a starting player can't do. Vazquez fields better than Jeffers. Farmer fields better than Julien and hits lefties better. A team with a lot of cheap, young players in the starting lineup has money to spend on veteran backups who complement the starters.

    My biggest worry about that strategy is the bullpen would be gassed in October. I'm for getting more innings out of them but not at the expense of availability in October.

    That won't happen. Both pitchers already have better offers than that.

    If you don't think Pivetta's a better pitcher then DeSclafani, then I guess I can't convince you. It seems pretty obvious to me. He's consistently produced 2.5 WAR per season over the last 3 seasons.

    Both would be long-term acquisitions, not just for 2024. Snell and Montgomery haven't signed yet because there are no contenders left with room in the budget to pay them. They may have to settle for a non-contender with room in the budget to pay them.

    Syndergaard is interesting. I think he still has the stuff to extend his career as a reliever. The only problem with that plan is he's the worst pitcher in the major leagues at holding runners. Many of the starting pitcher candidates listed above should be trying to find a spot in the bullpen, not in a big-league rotation.

    This is not necessarily true. If the Red Sox sign Montgomery then they might be interested in moving Nick Pivetta, who only has 1 year and $7.5M left on his contract. The Angels have 3 lefties in their rotation already and would probably move one of them if they signed Montgomery or Snell. Neither team is expected to contend in 2024 but they might want to do some bargain shopping as two of the few remaining teams with payroll flexibility and room under the luxury tax. They would be looking for prospects, not immediate help, in any trade.

    You were the one who appealed to Falvey's authority. If you're going to outsource your opinion to not sign him to Falvey then you should approve if Falvey eventually does sign him.

    The Twins haven't spent money on ANY starting pitchers this offseason. That's likely the reason the Twins won't sign him - he would cost money.

    I am against that. The Twins have plenty of minor league depth in AAA. Varland, Woods-Richardson, Headrick, Canterino, Festa, Dobnak is a full rotation. They need upside, not a warm body. edited: Forgot SWR and he might be the best of the bunch. There are already too many pitchers for St. Paul's rotation. Someone is going to be stuck in Double-A.

    It's likely that the teams who eventually sign Montgomery and Snell will need to open up payroll room by trading away one of their current starters. The Twins should be calling to check the prices.

    I see a lot of people disparaging Clevinger as a "bad clubhouse fit" with no explanation which is a pretty bad way to smear someone's character without any evidence. If they actually have a strong clubhouse then it can survive one person with a prickly personality. If they can't survive that, then they have a fragile, weak clubhouse culture.

    I'm with you that the Twins are pretty slow to make adjustments. That tells me they're relying on the stats too heavily. It takes a bunch of time to gain statistical confidence in a player's poor performance. The players actually get more reps in practice than they do in the games and good coaches should be able to tell if a player is struggling to perform in practice. If bat speed is poor or they can't recognize a breaking ball anymore AND someone is tearing up AAA then it's time to cut them loose. Part of the reason the Twins have kept players past their expiration date is there wasn't anyone obviously ready to replace them in the minors.

    No, your bench player should be on the bench because he can do something better than one of your starters. Margot is a good fit for the roster because he hits lefties better than Wallner and plays better defense. There is no sense having Larnach on the roster, even if he may be a marginally better choice than Margot because, unlike with Margot, there will be no matchup situation where you prefer Larnach over Wallner. Bench players complement the starters. If your bench player is bad, why is he on the roster at all? To become successful in the major leagues takes many at-bats and repetitions to make the necessary adjustments. I would rather have a veteran on the bench who has made those adjustments already and needs fewer reps to maintain his level of performance. A young prospect on the bench will take a long time to make those adjustments because they are not getting the repetitions they need to develop.

    Then someone will be screwed over because they won't be getting enough playing time. As of now there is no evidence at all Lee will be better than Farmer, Martin will be better than Margot or Miranda will be better than Santana. If one of them is one of the best 50 players in AAA they can make a move. Until then, they need to earn a roster spot.

    If Martin plays every day then Wallner is sitting the bench. If Brooks Lee comes up then Lewis or Kirilloff or Julien sits. Which young player do you want to mess with? I'd rather tell Margot and Santana to sit.

    Be one of the best players in AAA. Play better than the veteran non-roster guys who couldn't find a job this spring. If you're not one of the 50 best players in AAA then you're probably not good enough yet.

    If you're a defensive replacement and the short side of a platoon that's your outlook. I would rather have Margot and Santana on the bench and Martin and Miranda in AAA playing everyday. I really don't want Brooks Lee turned into a platoon player. Playing time matters. 10-12 extra at-bats a week is 40 a month or 250 over a season. If a starter gets hurt, then call up the rookie and give them a bunch of playing time.
