Why can't you use Staumont in the 7th? That's a great place to use Staumont.

That is one reason his career BABIP is so high.

Why? Recency bias, for one. He was definitely trending down when he was demoted but he also was one of the only players hitting worth a damn in April. Games in April still count in the standings. Even as he was trending down and struggling he was still picking up walks which is an underrated skill. There are a few posters here who just hate Julien for some reason. Others are apoplectic about strikeouts. Castro has definitely taken the position. He's having a phenomenal year and he probably brings the most value to the team playing regularly at 2B for the near future. I don't think the door is closed for Julien. He has an OBP of .387 in AAA (.539 over the last week!) because he has an elite batting eye. If he can make the adjustment to pitches down and in he's going to be right back in the major leagues. It took Wallner a month to make adjustments and he's crushing pitches now.

In the context of second basemen in MLB in the 2024 season. Look up his WAA on Baseball Reference and it says 0.0 - exactly league average performance.

I think it's a push. I agree that a trade seems likely.

The other teams get to face bad pitching too. It isn't like the Twins are the only teams who get to play the White Sox and Rockies. There are complaints that the best pitchers shut down the Twins lineup. That's what the best pitchers do - they shut down other teams. That's why they're the best pitchers. They're not the murderer's row Yankees but in a year where offense has been difficult to find for most teams the Twins are doing pretty well.

Julien was league average for his position for the time he was in the majors. He got on base and made his plays at 2B. Your expectations don't matter when determining his value to the team.

He knows there is risk in waiting. Another knee injury could cost him over $100M.

They're 14-10 in one run games. If that's attributable to the manager then Rocco is clearly an above-average manager. That is a pretty good record considering Thielbar has been useless, Stewart has been injured and Duran has been mediocre.

Two Twins Needing Big Second Half Turnarounds
DJL44 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Correct. They need an ace starter and a shutdown reliever and this is the easiest way to get both of them. -
Except they don't. Correa, Lewis, Miranda, Santana and Castro are doing a great job in the infield. Austin Martin is earning more playing time, not less, and should probably get some reps at 2B against LHP instead of Farmer. There is no pressing need for Brooks Lee on the major league roster. For the moment it is perfectly okay for Brooks Lee to play everyday in AAA, move around the infield learning different positions and wait for an opportunity.

There's the problem assumption. I don't even know if they want Brooks Lee to play 2B.

My vote for LVP is Caleb Thielbar. He's the highest paid member of the bullpen and the worst performer. He's been demoted to the 3rd lefthanded reliever and only used to soak up innings in blowouts.

That's fine, as long as they don't wait themselves right out of their own price range. It's going to be a small window between "He's too risky" and "He's too expensive" for the Twins.

No. Farmer would pass through waivers and become a free agent. The Twins would owe the entire contract except the league minimum. His job right now is mostly to make sure the bench is warm. Kyle Farmer is the most irrelevant player on the team at the moment. He's hardly playing which makes him an unusual scapegoat. Cutting him would make little impact because he's hardly playing as-is. If they bring up Brooks Lee he's going to need to be in the lineup every day. They're not going to let him rot on the bench like Kyle Farmer. That means fewer at-bats for Castro, Lewis, Miranda, Larnach or Martin. Those players are all doing quite well at the moment. That's the downside of promoting Lee.

He's not been good, and he's definitely not worth $10M, but there have been several catchers who are worse with a regular job in baseball. It's actually a sign of a pretty good team if their worst player is right around replacement level.

Julien doesn't deserve to be on the LVP list. He wasn't even the least valuable 2B.

If he wasn't one of the better defensive catchers his WAR would be much more negative. Think about how bad his bat is. WAR is saying his defense is good enough to cancel out a bat THAT bad.

If you DFA Farmer, he's NOT headed to St. Paul. He's headed onto another team's roster. That's why your suggestion hasn't happened.

Raya's been in Double-A for nearly a year now and the results have been pretty bad. ERA around 5, too many walks.

He's been healthier but Royce is the better offensive talent. Healthy Royce Lewis would be impossible to sign at just $200M over 10 years.

Possibly, but that is probably their last opportunity. After that Royce will have enough arbitration money in the bank to feel good about waiting for free agency. The window for this extension is short and after that the reality is going to force the Twins to trade him to get value before he walks for nothing.

I've been surprised at how ineffective Duran has been. They need him to come back strong in the second half.

That would be disappointing. I really like watching Royce Lewis and would miss seeing him after they trade him away in 2027.
