  1. Bader had a bad year and Taylor had his best offense season this year so I could easily be convinced Bader is not a good idea. However, Bader's career wRC+ is actually 10 points higher than MAT and Bader is better against LHP. Of course, Bader is a great defensive player. He would be a great fit if 2023 was a down year for him. The best solution of all might be to give Martin a shot but he is not going to defend like Taylor or Bader.
  2. MAT had real value this year but I would rather see them sign Harrison Bader. He hits LHP well enough to play a corner OF spot against LHP even if Buxton gets healthy enough to play some CF.
  3. You are going to ruin the fun if you insist on throwing a bunch of facts at us.
  4. They added Varland who was good in that role and they got Stewart and Paddack back. Who were they going to get at the deadline that was significantly better. This gave them a BP of Duran / Stewart / Jax / Pagan / Paddack / Thielbar / Funderburk and Kuechel. Therefore, whomever gave this take was not able to see any solution other than a deadline trade when there were obviously other options which were eventually deployed. It appeared to me the FO approach was focused on the playoffs where many participants here were focused on them being short-handed right around the deadline.
  5. You need to take a look around the league. BPs are not built through free agency and the only teams who sign top dollar free agent RPs are the very top revenue teams. Why? Because It's an incredibly inefficient use of payroll dollars. How many of the top 30 RPs were acquired via free agency? See link below. The Twins have augmented their BP with free agents and will likely do so again this year. However, relying on free agency (specifically dollar top RPS) to build a BP is a bad strategy for any team and a horrible strategy for anyone outside the top 10 in revenue. If you think this is wrong, show us examples of success. Top Relief Pitchers
  6. How is the BP a problem? They have Duran / Stewart / Jax / Thielbar / Alcala and Funderburk back next year and they might end up putting Varland in the BP as well. They have Winder / Sands / Ortega / Balazovic and Headrick for depth. Canterino could also be a big plus if he can stay healthy. They have plenty of budget to add a RP this off season as well. Who knows, they might bring Pagan back too. How is the BP a problem?
  7. I agree they have done a good job but they have made their share of mistakes. The one that stings is Cavaco. That was just too high a pick to risk on him when Carroll and Stot were sitting there. They made a major mistake investing so heavily in the 22 club. They might have been in first place but that team was not a contender. Not only was it a bad idea but they completely whiffed on the two guys with two years of control. Sawyer gibson-Long looked good in his initial stint with the Tigers so they may have over-paid for Fulmer too. The Berrios trade made sense but the return does not look great at the moment. Tyler Wells was another one. I don't remember the response here but he should had shown enough to be protected. Where this year's deadline is concerned. The majority of people posted something along the lines of how could they possibly do nothing. However, there were several people that posted the critics were not considering that Stewart and Paddack had a good chance of being back and Maeda could be used in the pen. Not to mention Kuechel might be able to contribute as well. While I don't recall, I thought one of the writers took this stance. Regardless, there were a few people here who had the same take as the FO.
  8. Where does Polanco play against RHP. Julien is the better option at 2B and Lewis at 3B. My thinking is that Farmer stays over Polanco because he hits LHP better than Polanco. Part of this is also how much belief they have in Martin and Miranda.
  9. Do you see them keeping both Polanco and Farmer? That seems to me to be the choice. The IF starters are going to be Kirilloff / Julien / Lewis and Correa. I think Farmer fits better especially the way Rocco plays matchups. He hits LHP better than Polanco so he fits nicely at 2B against LHP. He can also play 3B if they eventually start playing Lewis in the OF at times against LHP. Polanco probably does not have much trade value but I would think someone would give up something for him especially given 2025 is a club option. He is a 2.5-3 WAR player if he is healthy. He just does not fit very well here. BTW ... If they move Polanco and don't exercise the option, they are at about $125M in payroll. That would allow them to sign a good starter.
  10. We also don't have nearly as much information as the FO. They have a lot of information we do not regarding the specific plans for players and how they are progressing. Pagan is a good example. The general sentiment here was how on earth could they decide to hold onto Pagan. They obviously found reasons to believe he could be productive. There is also a tendency for fans to not believe too much in players improving. Jeffers and Kepler are good examples. Most said Jeffers was not good enough to be a primary catcher and Kepler did not belong on a playoff team. Where I see people here differing widely is relying on youth. Some are aggressive and some fans are not willing to rely on young guys coming in at all. IMO, the front office has done a good job the last few years of working young players into the equation in a way where they are not reliant upon them but are able to capitalize when they produce. As for the trade deadline, there were quite a few people here who pointed out we had a lot of players expected to work their way back before the end of the season. I think a lot of fans are just so eager to resolve a perceived problem that they discount those players expected to return. Again, the FO has a better information. They have both medical reports and performance reports helping them to determine expectations of the players on the IL.
  11. There are at least a dozen different prospects appearing in the last 5 or 6 spots on these lists. That's encouraging and it's going to be interesting to watch unfold next year. There are a bunch of guys that have shown promise. Let's hope they continue to impress as they move up to higher levels.
  12. Let's not forget about Canterino. Prelipp and/or Canterino bouncing back from injury would be big. There is pretty darn good depth between these guys coming back from injury, plus Festa and Raya adding a couple more higher ceiling guys and then all the guys you mentioned will be tested at the higher Milb levels next year. That's going to be interesting to watch but with a little luck we could be very deep in pitching for the next several years. Pitching prospects are always the big if but things are looking pretty good.
  13. Julien's K rate would be more concerning if it was the result of an inability to make contact. That's not the case. He is very disciplined and he gets called out taking pitches. He still produced an OBP of 378 and an OPS of 825. What's to complain about. I also like the chances of him reducing the called third strikes better than a swing and miss guy improving contact.
  14. I would feel really good about our pitching depth if Canterino and Prelipp return healthy and play to their capabilities.
  15. I don't see any of the comparisons as relevant. He simply is not ready. Why would we want to add any player who is performing below average at AAA? He was not good at first in AA and now AAA. Why would we expect he would have an impact in the playoffs at the major league level? I would bet he will perform very well at some point in AAA next year. Let's bring him up when he proves he is ready. Where the playoffs are concerned, let's pray Lewis can play.
  16. If he bashes the ball at AAA the way he did in 2021, they will either find room on the roster or get a nice return. We need to solve the deficiency against LHP. Perhaps he could eventually contribute to that cause. I would like to see them find a team that has too many OF prospects that are near ready and trade our similar IF prospects. I know this does not happen often but why not. There has to be a couple teams deep in OFers that could use an INFer or two. Maybe Washington? Hurley or Vukovich from Arizona?
  17. Gallo has had 19 PAs in the past 3 weeks. I think he would have been gone if Kirilloff had not been hurt. It seems like they are making very sure Kirilloff is healthy. Could that be because they are planning to let Gallo go when Kirilloff is reinstated?
  18. Seems like we would be selling very low and he is not bringing anything meaningful back. I would much rather start him in STP next year instead of selling low and see if he rebounds.
  19. Great to see Paddack pitching again. Seems like a longshot that he could get his command to the point where he can contribute in October but that would be a nice surprise. Walker Jenkins!
  20. I having been saying for a while they are well positioned but we all know how a baseball teams comes together and sustains success is highly unpredictable. Where I have the most questions would be the next wave of pitching. Raya and Festa have shown they have a high ceiling but they are not guys that have been consistent. The top two guys in terms of ceiling are probably Prielipp and Canterino. They could be an enormous factor but they are high risk. Then, we have the crop of SPs that started in A ball this year. They look promising but who knows as they move up. The OF also needs a rebuild. Walner is no sure thing. Perhaps Lewis in a super utility role or OF role when Lee moves up. That would help. Martin might help too but the OF needs a remake if this team is going to be the contender we hope for the next few years. BTW … I looked at the free agent OFers next year and it does not look good. I know most people are for using our IF depth to trade for pitching. I might be easier to trade for an Ofer. Nobody wants to give up pitching but there has to be a team or two that are deep in OF but need INFers.
  21. The ability to reach back for 100 on occasion is a nice luxury to have. Not trying to compare Varland to Verlander but he would do that on occasion. He can use it in relief but he can also pull it out when he really needs it during a start.
  22. I just hope Brock Stewart is one of the 11-12. Duran / Jax / Stewart / Thielbar / Pagan plus Ober and Maeda is plenty good depth especially in the opening round.
  23. Montgomery could be a good target for the Twins this winter. That said I sure hope the twins light him up tonight! An acceptable alternative is we light up their BP and our staff shuts them out.
  24. Lee has a wRC+ of 63 at AAA so he is not going to start the season at the ML level. Martin has had one hot month. He is earning a shot but he needs to show some consistency. Martin might end up playing more OF than IF. Julien can co-exist with the all of these players. We can trade him if we are so fortunate as to have multiple guys work out and we don't have enough playing time for guys that are legit starting caliber players.
