  1. At first I thought the title was "Tanaka Topless"... That would make for an odd TD story. I hope missing a sign doesn't put Hicks in the doghouse. Sure he should have caught the sign, but that shouldn't necessitate making the team worse and hurting Hicks' development. in regards to the number 2 hitter and productive outs, small ball can work if you have a lot of speed (and good defense as a byproduct) but this team doesn't have that. They aren't going to beat out many weak grounders to first.
  2. I think his average and homers will both climb batting in 2, with Buxton in front of him and Mauer behind. He'll see a lot more hitable pitches with Mauer behind him, and a lot more mistakes with attention being paid to hold Buxton on base. .280 ish batting avg 9-10% walk rate 20/20 should be pretty doable
  3. Context is required, the 94 win Delmon Young in LF team was a much better hitting team, much better fielding right fielder, much better pitching team with sinker ball throwing pitchers in a much smaller home ballpark. Whoever goes into left, third or DH (following any of the options floated as alternatives in this thread) in place of Willingham is going to be a poor hitter, it's a poor hitting team. At least it would have better out fielding.
  4. I couldn't agree more that Willingham needs to DH only, and that playing the field improves his value. I would argue the opposite. Batting cleanup and DH well will help Willingham's trade value. I have read a quote from several different players (Kubel and Willingham to name a couple) that DHing is harder than playing the field. It's interesting to hear Parmellee's name as a stop-gap left fielder. Though an obvious improvement over Willingham, I think it still leaves a big piece of real estate to cover from CF with Arcia in right.
  5. He has the nastiest stuff of a Twins pitcher for three innings. Better off in the bullpen for him and the team
  6. If Plouffe gets traded, who do you see filling his cleats? Waring looked good in ST (not that it matters) as a AA player. I think 8 is dead on, but with the low obp of the team, the dingers will be solo
  7. Didn't Steil take over minor leagues in 2012?
  8. How many more wins would the Twins have had last year with Revere, without Worley? What's the value of May to the future? I think Revere for Worley nets out to zero win difference and May still as a ton of upside.
  9. One that thinks they can waive him as well and he'll pass through because no one else will want him...
  10. I think the assumption is someone will claim him
  11. I'm happy to see the front office take the best pitcher regardless of risk of losing an asset. I wonder how Worley, Diamond, and Deduno pan out. Worley and Deduno seem to have the most trade value.
  12. Sounds familiar... Thanks for the update Thrylos. I'm trying to be optimistic for the season, but your report confirms my memory of last year. Bad defense, bad offense.
  13. Sorry I missed the joke. I think you're right, it would only take a good start or two for a pitching needy team to claim hm.
  14. Of third basemen, corner outfielders, and first basemen with the big league club I trust Mauer the most to play consistently good defense and offense, more than Arcia, Plouffe, Willingham, Parmelee, or Colabello. The Twins started this season with Mauer at first presumably because Sano is/was the third basemen of the future, and Mauer had played first in the past, it was an easy transition with no real immediate candidates for the position coming up through the minors. No one knows what the future holds for Sano. He may come out of TJ surgery just like the kid from "The Rookie" and magically able to throw 100 mph, but we do know is best case scenario, he comes back ready to play for spring training 2015, and maybe not until mid way through the season, and maybe (though highly unlikely) never plays again. He wasn't a lock to come up to the bigs at any point this season, and now being out of baseball for 6 - 18 months, he's going to need to ease back into things. I'd look for Sano to be major league ready in 2016. Now the question becomes would you rather have Colabello/Parmellee at first than Plouffe at third? Or Colabello/Parmellee at first than Willingham in LF or Arcia in RF. i think Mauer could become a defensive upgrade over all of the other options, I don't trust Colabello/Parmellee to hit well enough over a season to justify the shift. What if Mauer negotiated that the only way he would get out from behind the plate is if he went to first?
  15. I think Deduno benefits from being in the bullpen. It limits the control issues impact on the game, and allows him to focus on two pitches rather than three or four.
  16. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1997938-blueprint-for-building-an-elite-farm-system-in-todays-mlb Excellent read and I think does a good job of explaining player development processes from Radcliff of the Twins and the player development manager of the Angels.
  17. Deduno might be better suited for the pen than a starter, but with the options issues, I don't see the a Twins breaking camp with Gibson on the big league roster.
  18. I think some of the "love" for Deduno being 5th starter is less about Deduno and more about probabilities. I predict Deduno will be 5th starter because he had the most success last year of all of the pitchers who are up for that position currently. I think Deduno would be best suited for the pen because it would reduce his number of wild pitches and allow him to focus on the effectiveness of two pitched rather than 3 or 4. I would rather see Gibson as the 5th starter, but he is somewhat unproven and with the options situation as it is, I think the management will have Gibson start out in AAA and earn a promotion.
  19. In my world Starting 9: CF Hicks C Pinto 50% 2B Dozier 1B Mauer LF Arcia RF Parmelee 3B Plouffe DH Willingham SS Florimon Bench 4: IF Escobar OF/DH Colabello C Suzuki 50% OF Pressley Rotation: Ricky Nolasco Phil Hughes Mike Pelfrey Kevin Correia Sam Deduno Bullpen: (7) Perkins Fien Burton Duensing Swarzak Thielbar Tonkin Trade Worley and Diamond for whatever you can get. Trade Correia for prospects during the season and bring up Gibson. Trade Duensing during the season for prospects and bring up Meyer for the bull pen.
  20. That's a tough decision for the Vanimal, tank a game and put a seal on finishing his career as a washed up 26 year old AAAA pitcher on the worst pitching team in MLB... or pitch his very best, hopefully good enough to get traded to a better team looking for depth. while I agree that AAA is the right place for him to go, asking Worley to tank is offensive to Worley and very unlikely for him to go along with.
  21. Bartlett won't be the backup cf, the throwing mechanics are different and Bartlett doesn't have the arm or the wheels for it.
  22. Maybe a change of scenery and pitching coaches would be good for The Vanimal. It's possible a different point of view could do the trick. Zero swinging strikes and absolute befuddlement are telling. hopefully he passes thru to AAA as I still have hope for Vance in the Twins organization.
  23. Thanks AJ good stuff
  24. "There is an increasing sense of urgency in Minnesota with ticket sales lagging, and the Twins will be aggressive with roster changes if need be in the early going, reports ESPN.com's Buster Olney (Insider piece)." My source is http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/minnesota_twins/index.html since I don't spring for insider, but is this a purposeful leak to keep fans interested even though their favorite prospects are being sent down early? Also, I wonder if Gardy got more sway with TR than with Antony.
