  1. So you don't buy the optimism that his stats are relative to the park and division that he played in? Garza was supposed to be the top available pitcher with a 4.35 era for the rangers and a 3.17 era for the cubs, 13 starts a piece. Sure the rangers were the second half of the season and the cubs were the first, but it also points to competition and park.
  2. Hopefully sign more top-end free agents and make some good trades
  3. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/233955521.html I guess Nick's assertion of aggressiveness was spot on. I'm thrilled to see this!
  4. Ricky Nolasco signing before Winter meetings doesn't feel like a punt. It's odd because I've been pessimistic regarding 2014 FA signings, and the potential of the 2014 club in general. I'm feeling like the Grinch after returning all the presents.
  5. you should not feel guilty, embrace fandom for what it is. That's why we're commenting on a 96 loss baseball team's blog in November. I don't agree, but I support.
  6. Is there a stat for "keeping the long reliever out of the game"
  7. If Twins sign Nolasco and Pelfrey only I would be a 4. Not disgusted, but a tad disappointed they didn't do more. If the Twins sign a Dioner Navarro and a Matt Garza type in addition to Nolasco and Pelfrey, I would be 10.
  8. I am very happy. A great step in the right direction, even if Nolasco isn't the "true number one" type.
  9. im p.o.ed too. It's not that Pelfrey is bad. He's fine, if he were a finishing touch to round out a GOOD rotation, I would be over the moon. The problem is, he's the first, not the last. There's already plans for yet another 5 plus ERA back of the rotation filler guy who's just like the rest of a rotation full of back of the rotation filler guys, and no real movement yet ( and probably won't be) on a high end front of the rotation guy or three.
  10. One season of Clete Thomas starting 1/3 of the games was enough
  11. Played football at Notre Dame. WR I think
  12. Can't I hate them both?
  13. I read that MLB added a bench coach spot to the rule book (up to 8 I think) that the twins never filled
  14. Very cool presentation, thanks John. Going after the bargain bin doesn't significantly improve the rotation over what the Twins had last season. I'm with Old Goat, 40 mil has the potential to buy a competetive ball club, but status quo buys the more of the same.
  15. Nature vs nurture. Can you find a guy who looks like he has marginal talent and coach him up to exceed expectations? There is organizational skill there with the Cardinals, no doubt. It takes some luck though too. It should be nature AND nurture. It's just like the rest of the team building strategy. You can't only rely on free agents, or only rely on draft picks, you have to use a combination. And when you're evaulating players, you can't only take the no-brainer locks, you have to take fliers on marginal guys, but you have to coach them and build on successes of the team as a whole. Including luck.
  16. 3. More teams over 95 mil have been to the playoffs than under 4. It appears that the payroll trend is up for playoff teams
  17. Look at the Yankees, one of the biggest spenders, always high dollars spent/win, spends on free agents, spends on in house talent. They aren't afraid of getting talent and keeping talent, and they win a ton. While I hate the yankees, it's mostly envy.
  18. Overpaid for Kevin Correia? Is TR in for sticker shock if he were to ever seriously bid for a top tier pitcher!
  19. If you were watching the Twins you saw tons of strikeouts. Just few by the MN Pitcher.
  20. I have been until very recently on the "fire Gardy" bandwagon until recently. While I have gotten off that wagon, I still feel like without change, the Twins will continue to be one of the worst teams in baseball. like you say, we needed 3 high end pitchers last year, and all we got was corriea and pelfrey. We can hope for improvement from underperforming players, but I don't think there were any underperformers on this club, the vets played exactly like you would expect, and the rookies need to develop but that takes time. Again, if you don't change, how can you expect different results? Is TR beholden to Mackey? I would argue that if the team was performing in the top half of the league, no. Mackey is just a journalist. The way this team has performed puts TR under the microscope, and everyone gets a peak.
  21. we're you in the room? Man that's funny
