  1. Rosario has been extremely consistent. Consistently swinging at every pitch. He's got fast enough hands that if he were to have some idea of the zone, he might do well. He's just never shown it.
  2. yup, like others I'd like the Twins to target a higher cost, longer term asset than a back of the rotation rental. Starters in the system over the next couple seasons are rather thin and there's only 4 right now. Standing pat is a bad strategy
  3. both need to run with their opportunities, unless you want to see Haley or Wilk starting
  4. agreed, 3 mop up relievers is nuts. With the short starts, a case could be made for 2 legit long relievers could be made. All these rain outs are hiding how bad the last 3 spots were for a while there. If Mejia can reclaim and prove his worth like his last start, the second long reliever becomes clearly unnecessary
  5. i just assumed he has been pitching hurt since the spring. He's been getting hit very hard all season
  6. agreed, the starting rotation is nothing to brag about. The rate stats are an excellent way to describe it. With all of the rain outs, shouldn't the two counting stats (IP and WAR) be low in the rankings compared to the rest of the league?
  7. this. It's like trading with another team. Best course of action is to trade from a position of strength to improve a position of weakness. Moving big league relievers or close to big league relievers to minor/major league starters just shuffles the deck chairs on the Titanic. I think the current course of action seems like the best way to go. If Santana and Berrios can keep this up, they can get by for a while.
  8. didnt he say that on the Sunday podcast as well?
  9. Good stuff, thanks to Seth and Keith. I wish I weren't traveling for work right now.
  10. good point, but there's a big difference between the mets utilizing scrap heap in a get-me-by until Harvey comes back and the Twins who started the season that way
  11. or they are 4 games over .500 and on pace to win 86. If you think the only needs are a 5th starter, a couple of bullpen pieces and a bench bat, then why have they lost 90 games per season for 5 of the last 6 years? The pitching is aweful, 2/5 of the rotation and 3/8 of the relievers have no business on any big league club. 5/13 are terrible and they're carrying 13 pitchers because of that. I can't see this pace keep up, not with this pitching staff.
  12. TR is gone, and with him some/most of the poor decision making that drafted Stewart/Jay et al. My biggest concern is the development part. Whiffs are a part of the deal here, but that so many players are so ill prepared is the bigger reason why there's new management. Lots more people involved in that failure. It takes a lot of time to change and change over that group.
  13. Youve got 3 guys Brelsow, Belisle, and Pressly that need to get upgraded significantly. Pressly can maybe figure things out but I'm not sure in the bigs. If the starters were more consistently going 6-7 innings Wilk could be let go for a bench bat, but with the 2.2 inning clunkers coming 2 of 5 starts how can you justify it?
  14. dont confuse "closer" and "best reliever". The closer doesn't come in in the 8th when the heart of the order is due up to bat, nor does the closer come in the middle of the seventh with 2 on and no out, expected to strike out the next 3 batters. The closer comes in high pressure situations, but almost always the beginning of the inning and almost always a lead. Kintzler has proven effective in the role over close to a full season. Is he their best reliever? No. Should his role be their best reliever? No. He's effective, that's all I care about. Agreed with others, need more options for 7th and 8th innings. Kintzler is good in his role
  15. Never mind, the recap has a better indication http://mlb.mlb.com/r/video?content_id=1384053583
  16. I didn't get a chance to watch, but the one and only strikeout video on the MLB.com recap was on a pitch way outside that for some reason the batter took a swing. How'd he look otherwise? Judging by the bits I caught from Dazzle Dan and the box score he hit his spots.
  17. i don't know how much influence Hughes has, as much as I can guess that over the course of a season hard hit balls are caught less frequently than soft hit balls. His ERA must correlate at some point, right? I realize that I'm trying to do some loosey-goosey predictive assumptions but it seems to make sense in my head. Otherwise, if ERA is entirely in the pitchers control, what is the point of FIP?
  18. His hard hit rate is highest of his career as well, which adds some support to your gut http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7450&position=P Only so many of those hard hit balls will be catchable by Buxton
  19. It's a bit premature to be using defensive metrics, but if they don't regress too far to the mean this fielding could mean the difference between competitive or not.
