  1. ok, so not so young, still inconsistent. 2014 and 2015 were not full seasons in the bigs
  2. i wonder that as well, that he's hurt from last year and still not quite over it. On the other hand, It might be that he's just young and need to develop consistency
  3. i would hope that developing Buxton into a major league hitter has been priority 1 for a few years now.
  4. agreed on the need for a mechanical adjustment as well. predictability is bad
  5. how many cookies down the heart of the plate do you watch before you adjust? I mean Joe has seen a million of them, maybe 2 million, and hasn't said "you know, I'll bet if I swing at those a little bit more often, I might get more hits, or at least work more favorable counts"
  6. i see the need for depth. Option Gibby and keep him starting in AAA.
  7. and with Vargas replacing a pitcher, you've got the bench bat or DH and Grossman as 4th OF
  8. Dave Duncan who was pitching coach for Tony LaRussa's St. Louis Cardinals who retired in 2011 after coaching a World Series winner for the 4th time coined it. I don't think the issue is necessarily the concept, but the Twins implementation of it and reluctance to change from it.
  9. and one of them is the backup catcher/3b/1b/ball boy and works the grounds crew in a pinch
  10. but that's the issue with trading away pitching isn't it? Depth is thin, so you can't really trade it away unless you're getting back 2 close to major league ready pitchers. That's tough to swing.
  11. I do give Dave credit, he starts some of the best conversations. Lots of debate, lots of passion. In this case, I don't really get it. I don't get the hate for JRM, or the love for Hicks. Both have been pretty poor here, so is it really a trade issue? or is it a coaching/development issue?
  12. would i have traded Danny Santana for a AAA catcher? Heck yes Sure, I'd take Hicks over DanSan, but the catcher situation was dire at the time. While DanSan is terrible 4th outfielder is currently mismanaged. All three of the starters can play CF so the 4th OF needs to be a bench bat. This has nothing to do with AH trade.
  13. Erv's BABIP is .074 compared to his career .285. His FIP is .284 compared to last year's .381 and career .421. So he's pitching better, but he's also benefitting from Buck and extremely lucky. Count me as skeptical but very happy with the results. I certainly wouldn't extend him, but the rotation needs depth, which trading him most likely thins. Enjoy the ride and hope for the best, I guess
  14. i agree with the sentiment that he needs to adjust his approach. I struggle with the idea that he has less value. I think of it more that if he adjusted he could provide more value for a while, but then the book on him would be updated. He's neither the victim nor the villain.
  15. walks are the fault of the pitcher. Walks are not only the fault of the pitcher. If pitch framing is attributed to the catcher and OBP is attributed to the hitter, then Walks are a function of the pitcher, catcher, hitter and Ump. The pitcher can hit their spots but if Kurt Suzuki is framing marginal pitches as balls rather than strikes, is that the pitcher's fault? I thought the point was to avoid throwing the ball down the heart of the strike zone....
  16. hes tall so he should be a slugger? He's not a slugger, that's ok. He provides value with his obp. I understand the want for him to adjust his approach when he gets served up the first pitch cookie, but I don't get that.
  17. from what I've read, foxtrax is a guy watching the game with a telestrator marking the pitch by eyeball. I'm sure teams don't want to share too much, plus I'm sure networks don't want to spend the money to make it work automatically
  18. i also think that there's a Mauer article to be written about the 4th hitter coming to bat with no runners on base far more frequently than have 2 or more runners on base. While I absolutely think Dozier's on base plus slugging plays up better as 4 hitter and Mauers on base plus nothing else plays up better as 1 hitter, it doesn't matter that much.
  19. I agree, though im more on Chiefs side. The bullpen is currently a mirage and will regress, but then a few of the reinforcements will arrive and the bullpen will get stronger by adding more talent.
  20. I think this provides a lot of comparative relevance. It references several tables, notice past Twins catchers are at the bottom of the list. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23503 I think the importance here is valuing a strike in terms of predictive runs scored. Entire seasons of high pitch framing values gives improved probabilities for fewer runs scored.
  21. I would look that dang good in a Twins rotation too.
  22. seems like Duffey could be the guy to trot out there when you absolutely gotta get the heart of the lineup out, regardless of inning. He's stretched out, and Moli needs a long man too. Tonkin shouldn't be the long man. Neither Tonkin nor Haley are trusted in the least, so if your starter is gassed after 2.1 but you're not out of it cuz Buck is shagging all those gappers, who do you trust? Where 13 pitchers is really a 23 man roster... Mejia and Hughes look like they'll guarantee Duffey is the long man until he's a starter.
  23. i have a toddler and one on the way. This is very, very familiar and ominously preminiscient.
  24. I though the manager was more independent of the GM in terms of day to day decision making. I'm starting to change my view of the GM position relative to the Manager, however I do wonder if Molitor just didn't utilize the resources available to him for reasons other than the GM, but is using them now for reasons largely because of only the GM/VP. Walters had a good article about the increased usage of analysis. http://www.twincities.com/2017/04/08/walters-analytics-part-of-game-plan-in-twins-hot-start-falvey-says/ Quote from Walters " "I think guys like (scout) Jeremy Hefner and (coach) Jeff Pickler and the coaching staff and Paul (manager Paul Molitor) together did a really great job of using the information that they have, and that includes the scouting and the video looks along with some of the analytics to help prepare the game plan,” Falvey said of the opening series."
