  1. Im with you, but I think the plan is to find out what you have at midseason. Id say at most one or two of Gonsalves, Romero,Jay,Thorpe,Stewart might be ready for a spot start emergency call up by midseason. Most likely none of them will be in 2017. Until 2 or 3 of these guys are ready can you thin out the veteran chaff
  2. i agree, now is the time to get a good feel for Mejia and Berrios on the big league club. The problem is there's no one ready behind them to back fill them as most certainly 2-3 of the starting 5 will get injured and miss time. You can't count on bullpen games. You gotta have starters you can bring up from AAA with options. They tried and failed to acquire one or more and failed. I'm sure the attempts will continue. As it is, who the starting 25 is on opening day, doesn't really matter as 2-3 of the starting 5 will get significantly injured yet. Berrios and Mejia will both get ample big league starts. Probably not the extent that I want, but 15+ for each of them I'm sure.
  3. you can be great at things that might not be good for you.
  4. you're right, injuries happen. There's no way to know why for certain the timing of the injury happened or if things were different whether he might have never had the injury. I'm not losing sleep over it
  5. i know! Kinda weird. He was clearly shaken(who wouldn't be) but still oddly upbeat for having a serious injury.
  6. i worded that poorly. What I meant was that the WBC tends to push players harder faster than ST does which puts players, esp pitchers at more risk. It was against team USA, so maybe the competitive nature got the better of May here.
  7. yep, also why a bunch of managers, coaches, GMs and certain fans aren't big fans of the WBC

  9. bullpen games kill your bullpen.
  10. Santana is 34, which in baseball years is kinda like dog years
  11. you're right, I'm assuming Berrios is the first one called up, but he may not be. Duffey is probably the fall back to Hughes but will ultimately end up in the bullpen this season and Mejia is probably the designated short stint call up guy. More than likely Berrios would be called up second or if someone went on the 60 day DL or was cut altogether. They may not want to jerk around Berrios to much
  12. I don't "want" him at AAA for depth. The 40 man roster needs AAA depth, and doesn't have quality depth behind Mejia, and you need more than 1. The pool is not the same because if you cut Hughes or Santiago, or stick them in the bullpen, they are no longer an option for the rotation (in a short time frame). Let me be clear, the second to last thing I want to see is Hughes throw 90 MPH on opening day for the Twins. The last thing I want to see is Yohan Pino pitch for the Twins.
  13. agreed, and I think Levine's strategy to solve this was to trade Dozier for more than one high minors pitching prospect so he could cut one or two of Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and get his pipeline moving without sacrificing depth. It didn't work. That's OK, to Brock's point, Berrios is probably getting 20-25 starts in the bigs anyways because someone is getting hurt or cut in the first 6-8 weeks of the season.
  14. what I mean is the talent behind him is thin right now. For each pitcher, every pitch they throw might be their last. Thinning out talent on purpose might be best for Berrios in the long run, but worse for the team thrusting pitchers who aren't yet ready into bigger roles. It's less about Berrios and more about Mejia, Romero and R.Rosario. Mejia is closest but not exactly ready yet. Romero and Rosario are no where close. Maybe by mid-season but who knows? What I'm getting at is there's risk in putting all your eggs in Berrios's basket when you've only got one other pitcher who's ready to close to filling that Rochester shuttle role. There will be more than one injury to the rotation in 2017 that requires a DL stint. A trade can change that, but prolly won't happen for a while.
  15. agreed, but it seems like that is a significant risk considering the ready talent behind him. I think if he were showing more commitment to the process, it might be less risk.
  16. indeed, but all indicate priorities. If I canceled a vacation w/ friends to care for a sick kid that coincided w/ a history of always having a sick kid to care for when these situations arose, my friends might stop inviting me to go on the trip. Depending on my priorities, I might be ok with that. I might not. I don't know that Berrios has a pattern or how the FO responds to his participation in ST. I can however envision a scenario where Thrylos is correct.
  17. he might be one of the 5 best starters on this team but of the 6, he's the only one with options and there's a steep drop off between 6 and 7 and even steeper to 8
  18. his contract is guaranteed. If he's a free agent, its over and above the contract paid by the Twins
  19. i agree, but if you DFA Santiago in favor of Berrios and Hughes comes up lame, what do you do? My opinion is there isn't enough double A depth ready for big league duty to put your ML roster at risk. The Dozier for De Leon + other prospects trade didn't happen, but needed to in order to make this scenario feasible
  20. i also disagree, in that the young talent recently graduated are all hitters and their pitching is terrible, esp starters. There's very little starter depth in the high minors and not many expected to graduate in 2017.
  21. i like Buxton batting lead off if he can cut down on his outs, esp Ks. If his OBP is similar to his minors, he'd be a great lead off guy.
  22. yeah, but the vitriol is that there are already 4 locks when there should only be 1-3 locks. I assumed that the 4 current locks were locked-in on feb 5, however my feeling is that Santana and Gibson were the only two that should be locked-in. I don't really care what Hughes, Santiago, Gibson, or Santana earn, or if they are in the best shape of their lives. I care that they are effective and the best options available. Berrios and May are both probably better options than Santiago and maybe a healthy Hughes. I also get that depth is an important part of this equation, and i think that is missing here. It seems that Mejia and Berrios are destined for AAA until there are more AA/AAA pitchers ready to back fill them as quality reserves to the 25 man roster.
  23. Mauer never was a "3 hitter" following the argument, harkening back to the M&M days, Mauer and Morneau should have switched batting order positions. also following the argument Dozier doesn't need to hit 42 dingers in the cleanup spot, he needs to hit his usual 25-30ish and get on base at his usual .330-.340 clip and be there when 5 guy (Sano in this model) gets up to bat. Heres my interpretation of the obp model to lineup construction would be Mauer DH/1b Kepler OF Vargas 1b/DH Dozier 2b Sano 3b Buxton OF Polanco SS Castro C Rosario OF
  24. this is the argument for status quo that has been used for 20 years. How do you know the new approach doesn't work, if you don't try it? The whole point of the article quoted earlier is that obp has less affect on runs scored in the 3rd place in the lineup than first, second, 4th or 5th. Ergo, Mauer who's only tool is OBP has 5th most impact on run scored batting 3rd and most inpact batting first.
  25. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/platform/amp/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by The image is from a fangraphs article breaking down the subject blog post. As I read it, to optimize runs, Mauer should lead off, Dozier should clean up.
