last week I was in the make a trade to bolster the pen. I'm starting to come around to this way of thinking. Too many holes to plug in the rotation and pen. Start seeing what you have in the minors and cycle them through until the pitching staff is the same average age as the lineup.
agreed, sometimes it's ok to punt one game if it means having ability to win 2 or more of the following games. With an over taxed bullpen you're shot for as long as they are
are you worried someone will claim Matt Belilse or Craig Breslow? My biggest fear in this situation is more depth, single A and double A guys getting promoted too early out of need rather than readiness, but it now seems moot. Due to ineffectiveness and injury those parts are moving anyways. Might as well separate the wheat from the chaff now or the FO will both lose the division standing they have earned and still not know what they have in relievers later. Sometimes trial by fire is the only way
i had it in my head that Santiago and Berrios were switched. Agreed Palka is a step down from Vargas, but a better hitter than the other options for the next 10 days
Santiago pitched yesterday, if it were me, Wheeler would be an emergency pitcher today, but slated to start tomorrow to give Santiago another day and send Gibson to AAA. Is wheeler exciting? Not really, but he can't be worse than Gibson
i hope Santana gives another lights out performance today, and Wheeler gets the start tomorrow, goes 7 strong and then the pitching staff goes back to 12. Maybe bring up Palka on Wednesday
I think it makes a case for a balanced approach. http://www.fangraphs.com/community/success-rate-of-mlb-first-round-draft-picks-by-slot/ According to the article trading players and drafting players have pretty similar success rate. While you have more chances in the draft, it takes much longer.
the cupboard is pretty bare in double A and triple A. Snag 3 guys you don't really want in the bigs and then backfill somehow? I thought Levine was going to send down Gibson in the 6th inning last night. Then 9 innings later and Santiago came in, and things changed.
Maybe he needs a comic strip giving funny jokes about an incompetent GM I call it: Dalbert It is encouraging to see him improve. He was clearly identified by the FO and his progression has solidified the rotation. At least he's the type of guy you want as you fifth starter, rather than the guy you settle on.
yup, especially when traveling you rarely have the ability to prepare and store groceries. Shelf stable ready to eat junk and fast food are all you could afford if you didn't get the big signing bonus
his pro career consists of 1,458 pitches over 103 innings. He's been healthy for a season of high A ball. I'm disappointed and feel sorry for the guy. I wish him a speedy recovery, but man how do you activate a guy who's never been healthy?
i could have swore that TM posted an article or two with one of the owners while in AA or AAA shortly before his callup. Maybe I'm misremembering since I can't find it.
we saw the clunker a couple nights ago. The low strikeout rate and high walk rate will bite him in the ass again. I still think he can have a good to very good season, at least be better than his career norms, when regression to the mean sets in. He's had these types of stints in the past, maybe buoyed by the outfield a bit more... I'm not "concerned" and believe he could continue to have a very good 2017 but don't think it will maintain at this level.
