Playoff Pen: Alcala - Stewart - Varland - Paddack - Sands/Staumont - (Topa????) - Okert - Jax - Duran ……,,everybody has struggles with Pen through a season ……I still think, as you pointed out, that this can be a strength.

How about a rested bullpen coming out of the Break and giving up 8 earned runs in 2 games…….that didn’t help a thing!

Series in Boston in mid-September is potentially for the 3rd spot to get into the playoffs! K.C. is going nowhere - Seattle may pick up a couple hitters - Astros are solid - O’s or Yanks have 1 Wild Card - Boston seems stable - even Texas has the roster to make a run at us…….4-5 teams for the last 2 spots.

The flaw to me is……we’re going to lose 45% of the time. How that occurs differs. Perfect managing doesn’t exist because guys only get hits (when given opportunity by Manager) 25% of the time. Bad things are going to happen relative to winning the game. If it’s Wallner striking out facing a lefty in the 6th or whenever, or Margot not getting a hit after he doubled in his previous AB …..failure is going to happen routinely. Team is w/o it’s top 3 of 4 hitters…….give that situation to any Manager in the game and give the opposition Perralta & the results aren’t going to be very positive.
-
They do switch pitchers essentially every time - that’s part of why he does it, so they need to get further into the Pen and to get a right handed pitcher back in the game for the others in the line-up. If he doesn’t pinch hit him the flow of the guy on the mound stays in tact and the defense still has a mismatch v. whatever LH hitter is in the box. Margot’s been worse than brutal when this happens but from a strategy angle, it makes sense.

I get the frustration after a loss. Baldelli is managing to get ahead & generate offense when the opportunity arises in the middle of the game so there is no need to rely on Martin - Margot - Castillo or anyone else in the 9th - 10th - 11th - 12th. Every Team is out of options that late in a game……it’s not unique to the Twins! Margot doubled and gave the Team a chance to go ahead earlier but it didn’t happen. That’s not on him - it’s not on Baldelli, just baseball. Did we all see Okert absolutely butcher a gift out on a pop up bunt - he’s a major league player…….,,not only did he not catch the ball, he then made sure it hurt more by touching the ball just before it was to go foul……Baldelli, nor any Legion Ball coach teaches either of those decisions. All have a right to complain but every loss being Rocco’s fault in some twisted way seems odd, to me.

Edouard Julien Returns. What Can We Expect?
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He hit great for a month - 7 HR by April 27th. Then he went into the tank. In total, struck out at a 40% rate into early June……,hitting .204 with no more HR after April 27. He needs to regain some aggressiveness on pitches in the zone, along with some better success with contact. Can’t hit .233 and rely on BB to carry your OBP. MLB pitchers will throw strikes if they don’t think you can hurt them with your bat! I think he’ll be OK long-term but he may need to see a Sports Psychologist in the off-season because he has some mental issues in the box. Maybe he’s on the way to getting right but from what I read above, it’s not real positive to date in St Paul…….gotta say 3 HR’s in last 9 games does sound like a step in the right direction……..he needs to get XBH coupled with all of his walks. Said this last year - just an opinion based on body language and outcomes - he seems arrogant to me. Last year I said, and still believe, he acts like he’s Ted Williams……meaning his fine eye for balls and strikes should get the same respect Ted used to get. Not realistic. ……there’s a fine line between being confident and being arrogant, & to me, Eddie’s on the edge. -
Twins Pursuing Rental Starting Pitching At Trade Deadline
JD-TWINS replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
To me, Tanner Scott for the Pen would be a primary target. Middle to late inning lefty with really solid success in ‘24. Also a rental ……possibility to re-sign going forward as well. I know it may be antiquated thinking but trading within the Division seems difficult to get comfortable with……..Flaherty seems Team’s best option. Kikuchi could be the fallback for both of the previous thoughts? Don’t have as much trust in him down the stretch. Due to competition for the available arms, Team may have to get by with current 5 with spot starts from Festa - Varland - Matthews? Maybe not ideal but a realistic approach. Bringing Stewart back & potentially adding Scott would make the Pen top flight for last two months! -
IMO, unless there is other information, Julien seems to make sense for the 26-man right now. Miranda & Castro would maintain position flexibility along with Lee. I think it would be good to slot Lee at 3B every day other than when Miranda might start to give him rest…..every 5th day? I do not understand carrying Camargo on the 26-man after going 260 games over the past 270 games with 2 catchers on the roster. After hearing Correa’s comments just before the Break, regarding his hindsight move for last year would have been more rest early on, seems he should take a 10-day IL stint as well, on top of the last 7 days off. Could make it retroactive so it’s not more than a few more days. Martin the 26th guy soon? Any Miranda update?

So, I get that you are just printing what somebody else has put into print……….how can Eddie Julien be worth more than Dylan Cease…..Gallen……Fedde???? I guess $$$ cost is in the mix as well as years of control. Fedde isn’t really much above AVERAGE at all…..he only costs $7.5M next year…….I’d trade Eddie for Tanner Scott as a Rental and take the $14M we may have to sign a guy going forward for 3 years. An absolute dominant Pen!!!

A Different View Shows Theilbar's Season as More OK than Awful
JD-TWINS commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
Baldelli has nothing to do with Thielbar’s ineptitude! …… pretty sure Caleb would confirm that. Professional Athletes not performing & that getting put on their Manager is old. Thielbar can get guys out if he’s on - like pretty much every reliever in the game. His % of “on” has dropped off considerably. When your stuff is on fine margins you can’t afford to walk people or get behind 3-0 when entering games and there’s been too much of him putting himself in a hole. Either of the other lefties have had their bad days as well - Okert’s ERA is 3.86 though……seems that tells the story of effectiveness. -
I guess the “……which is not what anyone expected or wants.” is what threw me. Nobody wants him to do poorly - I just don’t pay attention to the details at this low level. I’m confident that over the next 24-36 months he’ll develop into the guy they wanted. No guarantees obviously, but I don’t really (me, not everyone) pay attention to guys success at until he’s been in at least A ball for a couple months. He should do well - you’re right there! With a kid, and injuries, my expectations are really low.
-
Lots of guys that are drafted are just out of high school but many/most hitters have been in college for 2-4 years…………he’s fine, and with his injuries to date, it seems that’s all that can be expected from a 19 year old. Probably doesn’t get a sniff of Minneapolis until September of ‘26 at the earliest. Plenty of time to evolve.
-
With Lewis potentially out for another entire month………Correa with Plantar Faciitis for the remainder of the year………Farmer with bad shoulder & no offense……….Miranda with back issues……….Lee being a Rookie that started fast but will level off, it seems to me that Julien (if hitting as shown here) should be on the 26-man with the Twins & not on some other roster. As guys are available they can play predominantly on the left side of IF. Castro & Lee can flex to fill whatever position needs to be filled. Between Correa - Miranda - Lee they can cover DH on most days. Can’t afford to move Julien with all these other balls in the air on July 19!
-
Okert is far from perfect but with a 3.86 ERA as a middle reliever, he’s not really out of line for the norm.

5 First Half Surprises for the Minnesota Twins
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just about every reliever comes in and brings along a sense of anxiousness for the Fans. If he recently had a bad outing people are nervous that he’s losing it………if he had a good outing, he’s due to give up some hits or maybe a run or two. It’s a tough position from which to routinely satisfy the fans.- 16 replies

Twins Top 20 Trade Value Series: 11-20
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is there a NEED for a reliever or is it just the only plausible flaw? (other than starter depth) Staumont - .86 ERA Alcala - 1.56 ERA Jax - 1.91 ERA Duran - 2.93 ERA Sands - 3.56 ERA Okert - 3.86 ERA Funderburk - 5.61 ERA Thielbar - 5.64 ERA Jackson is gone …… Topa is a Big Maybe, agreed Stewart is a strongly probable in early August Varland is strongly probable by mid-September Paddack is strongly probable in late September Can we really improve with a no option veteran via trade…….that’s going to pitch better than what we have, for sure?- 24 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I get the bit of angst with Margot! His defense has not been at nearly a high enough level. Really poor offensive start to the year over most of 6 weeks. I do think that going into the season, CASTRO was the anticipated back up for Buxton …..maybe even at level of being the guy to see equal or slightly more innings than Buxton, dependent on health. Margot was the RH bat to spell Wallner first & Kepler second v. LH pitching. Lefty starter, Castro - Buxton - Margot in the OF makes most offensive sense & did in March. Nobody saw Lewis going down for 58 games after 2 AB’s - this forced Castro into the IF along with Farmer’s continued ineptitude at the plate. Wallner was terrible, enter more & more Margot. Buxton’s knee hurt and Castro was an infielder now, more & more Margot. Team was forced to play him against RH pitching and the results were seldom good. I still think the FO had the right idea with what they knew at the time of Margot’s signing.- 121 replies
