  1. RYAN HURT - not cool! Dobnak can’t pitch effectively at MLB level. Varland starts Friday along with Ober in the doubleheader. Will need another guy on Tuesday as nobody will be rested & ready. Matthews?? 22 hits in 14 innings in St. Paul - no walks - he may need to break his “all strikes” pattern to be effective at higher levels? Henriquez &/or Topa for Dobnak ASAP! Richards didn’t ingratiate himself to anyone after coming in for Ryan today.
  2. I’m not sure if “really low strand rate” means he isn’t very good at stranding runners or he doesn’t allow many inherited runners to score? In either case, pretty sure that “strands” relate to inherited baserunners - right? Strand rate wouldn’t have anything to do with his ERA if they were on base when he entered the game. Puk’s ERA is inflated due to a few starts he made and was really bad in - not many innings and a bunch of runs. He moved back to relief and flourished.
  3. The Kepler/Lee play was odd……it’s the OF ball if/as he calls it - Lee exuding confidence but no exchange after seemed odd. Can’t sweat those details and I assume somebody said something in the dugout.
  4. Have paid no attention to how he’s doing in St Paul - seems, from what he’s done in brief innings for Twins, that Ronny Henriquez would be a reasonable option v. Dobnak. Not sure that after 3 appearances and not quite 5 innings, that he should be on the 26-man. Dobnak’s ERA sits around 10.00 and watching him throw, it doesn’t seem to have much of a chance to go down much. Been anticipating Topa’s joining the Team for 3 months or more ………the data on the slider for ‘24 doesn’t sound great, hope he can get back to form very soon!
  5. Already posted twice on the Larnach base running miscue - it is what it is - to me it’s really poor, others don’t think it’s a big deal - can have differing opinions, no problem. I would like to let others know that the Noon Eastern show on MLB Network, “MLB Now”, hosted by Brian Kinney, spent 2 minutes of their show trying to emphasize how completely “unbasebally” the play was. The two former players were equating it to things you learn as a little leaguer and were completely aghast……they showed the field from the Press Box view and it looks even worse…….actually hard to believe. At one point, Wallner was 2/3 of the way to 2B and Larnach was a step or two past 2B, standing still.
  6. FESTA sure looked good over 5 innings. Got out of a bit of trouble a couple times. He really kept the ball down well for the most part. Couple curves up in zone he got away with for strikes. 9 K’s in 5 innings….wow. Slider - change combination starting in zone and finishing below zone were really good!! Dotting his 96 MPH fastball at the knees 7-8 times really made the off-speed work. He’s maybe going to be up and down with control through September and inconsistent with his performances but he sure has a great upside looking forward!
  7. When Correa is back, Martin seems to be the probable demotion. IMO, when September comes around, Martin is definitely ahead of Kiersey ………no chance for Kiersey to be up unless a couple of guys are injured. Live in Cincinnati and have been a supporter but how does Kyle Farmer get back on the 26-man roster? He can remain around for the Bench Guy influence and remain hurt. If Martin goes down when Correa’s back, Lee is the only other possible demotion when Farmer is activated……,that can’t happen - right? Pretty sure they are limited to, or will choose to, adding one of each….. a pitcher and a position player on September 1st. Kyle Farmer is a maybe at that point but anything sooner (unless Lee’s throwing shoulder is a real concern) cannot be seriously considered. A rehab stint pushes the Twins into acting on Farmer ……,hope they slow roll that decision.
  8. .332 OBP & 118 OPS+ & 17 HR. ……Rutschman .307 OBP & 114 OPS+ & 23 HR ……Raleigh .312 OBP & 111 OPS+ & 16 HR ……Jeffers Defense goes to Rutschman ……. if he warms up just a bit he’s in the mix with other good offensive catchers. Would be nice if he could get his BA up 10-15 points……20 HR is fine/good if he plays 100 games!
  9. Correct, not really sure what the pertinence is there?……whether it’s $450K or $3.8M it’s that he’s getting paid well to focus for 6 second stints over 2.5 hours per day……..maybe the emphasis from the 1B coach needs to be accentuated? My point is guy’s referring to amateur ball, Legion ball, High School or college and equating mental mistakes they made to what Larnach did are not apples to apples. I’ve watched sports for 55 years - I played handful of sports …….I understand that mental mistakes happen and they become part of the game, every game. None of the rationalizations make it any easier to watch/experience. I saw the replay again this a.m. in MLB & the voice background from Provus was complete disappointment & surprise. I don’t hate Larnach - he’ll be fine. The mistake(s) he made not getting to 2B on the wild throw to the plate that was 20 feet in the air, and then not scoring on the fly ball that landed on the track gives the impression that he really needs to be coached up when on base.
  10. I get the sentiment and won’t hold it against him forever. ……..you weren’t getting paid $700,000 to know how many outs there are and to take off on a fly ball (contact) and hustle around second and pick up your coach………Hawkins was trying not to go off on him - this was 60 seconds, maybe a bit more, after he didn’t go to second base on the throw home - Hawkins pointed out that he made a probable base running mistake in that play…….one would think that would make him sensitive to the situation - right?
  11. How much would/should Larnach have been fined if this turned into a real tight game? Fly ball to the track in right-center ……2 outs ……..he starts on first then he’s two steps around second base and watching the fly ball……basically stopped and watches it bounce………..TWO OUTS……..he should have been able to back peddle to the plate. Instead, he was thrown out by 10-15 feet - absolutely pathetic base running!!!! Cannot play like that at this or any level - no excuse.
  12. Per the post - he’s #4 in WAR as an outfielder in the A.L. ……….Judge - Soto - Duran are the only guys ahead of him. Some nice comments made here but, come on - his season to date has been fantastic. His offense since early-mid June has been on an extremely high level. Byron Buxton hitting .276 and a slug% over .500 and an OPS+ of 135 is special - better than I would have dared to hope for - on pace to play 125 games…….115 of those in CF.
  13. I don’t care about the Guardians success or lack of success with their young players. I respect their organization - that’s it. All of my comments have been about the fact that the Twins aren’t running as many young guys through the SHOW because they have good veteran players and they can’t displace that talent nor number of bodies because there are only 26 roster spots. Have been trying to refute the idea that the Twins should be bringing up guys in the same fashion or at the same rate as the Guardians. Can’t experiment with guys in Minneapolis if there are already guys there doing the job…….doesn’t make sense………roster math doesn’t work.
  14. I thought your article was going to be about how he’s going to have to start either Friday or next Tuesday v. Royals. Can’t cover those two spots/starts without some help from AAA! He’s definitely in the Pen in October! If the other starters hold up, am assuming they’ll move him to Pen by September 15, to get acclimated. Dobnak shouldn’t be on the 26-man ………Matthews isn’t really an option until he has a bit of sustained success in St Paul Really hope Topa has some level of competence in Minneapolis SOON!
  15. Both SWR (4 days) rest & Ober (5 days rest) would/should be ready to go Friday, I would think? My assumption is they stick with regular guys for Cleveland & bring in Varland next Tuesday, when really squeezed for options. Already enough stress on the Pen with a doubleheader - Varland seems like a risky starter in that scenario………no “givens” with anyone though, I guess? Henriquez or somebody may be up to help with innings this weekend.
  16. Duh - Lopez should be ready to go by Sunday for the last game with Cleveland…..no need in near-term for Louie…..maybe on the Tuesday v. Royals though?
  17. Paddack - Varland - Topa - Stewart in the weeds for bullpen help ………no deadline regrets. Richards is serviceable as an 8th guy. Not his issue Okert - Dobnak - Thielbar are also in the Pen. He’s a number 8 guy and he’s currently number 5 or 6 in the Twin’s pen. Really hope Festa shows up as competitive for 5 innings tomorrow! NEED innings. Dobnak is not the answer …….,cement mixer sliders at 83mph and change ups that are thigh high…….no real pitch he can get by anybody. Scary!!! What’s wrong with Henriquez? Festa - Lopez - Ryan in Chicago………off day Thursday ……….SWR & Ober on Friday - Festa on Saturday - Ryan can’t go Sunday on 3 days rest - VARLAND?……make sense?
  18. He looks the part of “The Bearded Nightmare”…..a nickname that’s gotta stick, from Trevor Plouffe. Jeffers - Kepler - Martin - Castro all big contributors………Kepler’s homer was huge to get them back in front. He hammered another ball later off LH pitcher that got caught. Good to see him picking it up a bit!!
  19. Get used to Margot - Lee - Vazquez …….the 3 guys under 100 OPS+ …….they aren’t going anywhere in 2024. Can only have so many high performing hitters on roster……they won’t be displaced by churning from the bottom. Twins (with Correa) & Baltimore have 10 guys at 100 OPS+……only them. Royals have 6 guys at or over 100 OPS+. Yankees have 6 guys at 100 or over OPS+. Mariners have 5 guys at 100 or over OPS+ …….Arrozerena & Turner are over too but they have only played 6 & 3 games and they’ll regress. Red Sox have 8 guys at 100 or over OPS+.
  20. I get the sentiment on the Lefty Relievers ….bottom line is, in the Playoffs, the starter is going to face the guys like Alvarez & Tucker 3 times…….then in the 4th or 5th AB it would be great to have some advantage …….seems we just have to roll with good stuff from the right side and live with the results. 12 spot jump in BA 5 spot jump in OBP These seem to point to more consistency leading to Runs Scored than what Team did last year with being #3 in HR & way more K’s. Drop of 1 spot in Slug% & less K% helps keep everyone in the line-up viable. Once Correa is back and Lee is displaced from every day action, the Team has 10 guys playing regularly with OPS+ of over 100……….only Vazquez - Margot - Lee don’t meet that threshold.
  21. Diatribe - seriously? Mike certainly isn’t the only guy within the TD group that thinks more youngsters should be playing for the Twin’s big club. It’s stated 2-3 times weekly. IMO he pointed to the Guardian’s success with young guys - wondering why they use so many and why/how they seem to be successful. They are spending $20M less than the Twins - gotta play somebody. …….I pointed out Naylor was pretty successful in ‘23 and not much of a risk going into ‘24. Like Eddie Julien, he’s had some flashes in ‘24, but bottom line is he’s hitting .203 at end of July. They aren’t all great successes.
  22. Reliance on Stewart seems heavy and off balance somewhat ……..the guy throws 1 inning Max maybe 2 of 3 games played……that’s his normal workload when healthy. I agree he could be a nice piece, key piece of the Pen, but he isn’t driving the success of our staff. Topa could be a nice wildcard - hopefully we’ll see him in next 2-3 weeks! Paddack & Varland to the Pen, along with Stewart - Sands - Alcala - Jax - Duran could be the formula to finishing an Opener by SWR!! Don’t see the Staff as mediocre in any sense - don’t see a dominant top end guy yet but that’s not needed in a 5 or 7 game Series.
  23. Bo Naylor had 200 AB’s last year and over .800 OPS………not exactly a big risk or not an obvious choice to start ‘24……….he’s responded by hitting .203 btw. I didn’t say we used as many young guys as Cleveland nor did I say we were even comparable - they’re desperate….Twins are not. I listed guys that have gotten a call to illustrate who has been up, for however long. My point is the roster’s only so big - I’m tired of hearing about how “other” young guys from the system should be getting a look. Who do they displace? There’s never a plan - just complaining that guys are hitting .289 in AAA and they should get a chance. If the Guardians didn’t exist, my opinion would be the same - the guys that are deserving of time at Target get it when they are needed.
  24. Martin - Lee - Camargo - Festa - SWR - Castillo Wallner - Julien - Funderburk - Henriquez …..,assuming a couple I’ve missed over last 1 1/2 yrs…….. Kirilloff - Miranda - Larnach just prior This seems to me to be a pretty large % of the 26-Man roster………..there are only so many spots available to “try guys” with 26 spots. I really do not see the reason for continually wanting other new players up “to get a chance”. Gotta win games once in The Show, not audition guys.
