  1. Ryan “overused” is not really a thing. Not heard that from anyone else anywhere ……and blaming it on Varland needing to stay stretched out until September doesn’t have anything to do with Ryan’s injury. Rushing guys back v. them getting hurt in the normal course of playing is different! Definitely agree there should be no playing guys immediately if they are not ready to perform.
  2. Winder has pitched in 4 games in the Show in ‘24 - 9 total innings - not a big sample size, given. 3.00 ERA - WHIP of .889 - He’s got 10 K’s & 1 walk. Not much to be critical about there. I like Ronny & have been pushing for him at various spots during the year…..7 total innings in the Show over 6 games. 3.86 ERA - WHIP of 1.286 - He’s got 6 K’s & 1 walk. Good performances as well. Both had one bad outing. Don’t see anything here. or when I watched them both throw that has me believing Ronny has “clearly outpitched Winder” in ‘24.
  3. Not directed at you just general observations not just on Ryan but on the Top 3 guys: ERA……Ryan & Ober are 27th & 28th …….30 Teams with 5 starters each (do need minimum innings) Lopez has a 2.29 ERA over last 11 starts. Lopez is #49 in ERA. Innings pitched……..Ryan (has missed last 2 starts w/injury) 135 innings - Ober 140 innings - Lopez 148 innings. Top 10 guys are between 155-165 innings. Strikeouts……Lopez is #15 - Ryan is #21 - Ober is #25. WHIP………Ryan & Ober are 5th & 6th with a .99 each. Lopez is #21 with a 1.14 mark. To me, WHIP may be the most telling stat over the length of time. Wins…….(the “meaningless stat”) they are a combined 31-20 with Lopez & Ober (12 each) being tied for 7th place in the game!…….that projects to a 93-60 W-L over 2 plus years ……..effective guys helping the Team garner wins. Am not really worried about who the Ace may be nor whether we have an Ace. There are 3 guys going forward with big time capabilities. Unfortunately, Ryan actually contributing more this season is probably not realistic. These 3 with the 3 Rookies behind them bring real promise moving toward 2025.
  4. Am glad to put the “un-hittable Sonny Gray” to rest. I like Gray - wish him well - he was not a necessity for this club to have success and tired of hearing that for last 9 months. Pablo showed up in a big head to head pitching match up! Gray’s ERA is 4.07 v. 2.79 in ‘23. He’s at .6 runs higher than his career 3.51 ERA. He’s given up 20 HR’s through August 24th, with 7 starts left in the season and last year he gave up 8 through September. He started great and may rally to have a decent year. He’s not a dominant Ace as was evidenced last year in the playoffs. He got out of a big jam in the 5th by picking a guy off 2nd. He was done after 5 innings. Then, he pitched poorly in his next outing v. Houston. Would it be a nice luxury to still have him on the Twin’s roster? Sure. Not down on the organization though, for not getting him signed at $25M/year through ‘26.
  5. Bringing back guys whether they “are ready or not” doesn’t seem like a good plan…… Keirsey………maybe deserving on a lesser club but once Buxton is back (soon) he has no chance of being on the roster. Ready for Winder & Varland to displace Richards & Henriquez or Blewett.
  6. Interesting, about Lewis. Seems Lee would then have a consistent spot to contribute from as well. Essentially, a hands down reason to be able to “free” Farmer.
  7. His ERA is up 1.22 runs over ‘23 and one-half a run higher than his career mark of 3.51. I doubt the Cardinals love those numbers…….his ERA is over 4.00 after tonight. He’s pitching a decent amount of innings. He can improve or bounce back over his last 6-7 starts. He started out well but has been steadily declining………they don’t regret it yet but they aren’t enamored with his performances.
  8. Flexibility with not taking on $35M per year for these two guys extends past 2024. In ‘23, in games started by these two, the Twins had a losing record. Approximately, 6 games under in their starts combined. ERA is great (lack of run support sucked for Gray) but replacing the W’s is what needed to occur. Team has managed to do that and then some. Team has a better record by 10 plus games over this point in ‘23 with a Staff & Rotation ERA that’s much higher. Gray’s ERA in ‘24 is going to be at least 4.00 after tonight’s game. He’s 1.22 runs per 9 innings higher than his ‘23 mark……,he’s 1/2 a run higher than his career 3.51 ERA. His FIP may be in line as you say but he’s not getting good results - not $25M/yr results. Granted, he may improve over next 5 weeks! If Varland can slot into the Pen & Winder comes back up with more similar results, I think they’ll be fine through the next 6–10 weeks!
  9. I have thought about it and offering him a 1 year deal for $7.5-$9M is probably not a bad move. He could be the 3.5 outfielder. Worth considering if he doesn’t melt the last 5 weeks!
  10. 4 of 7 all year is a 93 win pace……..good baseball, with the possibility of a couple more mixed in there. I saw the same future for Royals - pretty challenging!…..,4 games series with Guardians starting Monday gives Twins a. chance to pull even by Wednesday.
  11. Duffy and nearly every other reliever were a starter within the previous 1-4 years. Not too many guys get drafted as a reliever out of college & obviously zero out of high school. He’s head strong - just watch him on the mound. IMO, it’s been wise to keep him available throughout the year but now Morris seems he may be on a similar par and able to give the Team 5 innings in a pinch. I’d add Louie & Winder (was optioned and is delayed) to the Pen ASAP!!
  12. Needed a win! 4-3 on road is respectable……could’ve won 2 or 6……will take the 4. SWR keeps them competitive - nice confidence while getting through tough situations. Chance for a very successful home stand ……..hope they can take advantage.
  13. Martin’s base-running in 2nd was a really heads-up move. Vazquez is stinging fastballs in his hot zone - nice to not feel like an automatic out in his spot. He’s well over .300 since July 1st, with some XBH pop. Matthews got squeezed on a few strikes up & down in the zone. In some AB’s he had trouble the count was 0-2……gotta be sharper with command. He hit Arraez in the foot in first and then had Merrill down and gave up the 0-2 double to clear bases. It’s his second start and nobody’s perfect. The TWO walks after the error really stung and made evident his struggles with command. He’s got 5 pitches……the change-up needs some work & maybe a couple more curve balls per inning?? He’s got nice potential!
  14. Do not understand???? - in what way? These guys know they could be called on. They are all professionals!! The Manager doesn’t prepare batters for AB’s…..it’s not Little League.
  15. So, again, I get how everyone wanted to get a WIN and just happened to have a better idea than Baldelli. Human nature to think your own thoughts are correct…..especially after the outcome turns out to be not so good. However, with a 4-0 lead, the least pressure that could be put on Alcala getting his inning in on Sunday & contributing was to start the 7th. He had a clean situation and still had Jax & Duran behind him. A 4 run cushion is considerable and he was under no excessive pressure. Lopez had been working through the same line-up without great stuff nor great command for 6 innings. The Rangers have a solid line-up but Lopez proved (and was proved over first 3 games) that it’s not murderers row. Alcala wasn’t up to the task - in a big way. Hoping he shakes it off for next outing.
  16. My hindsight is that Alcala comes out and pitches to his capabilities and worst case gives up 2 runs - everybody is happy and there’s no debate. Much greater chance of a 2.15 ERA pitcher to have success v. not using him until the fantasy inning when he doesn’t screw up.
  17. I think what’s inexcusable is when Baldelli pinch hit Lewis late in the game and then Lewis had the audacity to strike out - what terrible managing!
  18. In what world does anyone on TD support bringing in Richards for Alcala in the midst of a jam? You “don’t care how many pitches were thrown….” - then you’re not watching in reality. 4 pitches to 3 batters (impossible to replace him at that point, unless you have a Genie in a Bottle) - nice to say after the guy gives up 2 HR & 3 more runs from a couch. He got an out with Seager on 2nd ……..apparently gaining some composure and able to pitch to his capabilities……no reason to think otherwise. The guy has been lights out nearly all year! Players screw up - it happens.
  19. It’s got nothing to do with needing a fresh inning……when the 7th started the Team needed 9 more outs. Also, Alcala had a 2.15 ERA. He threw 4 pitches and there were 2 runs in, and a guy standing on 2nd. 4 pitches. Things couldn’t get any worse……he got the next guy & then HE, not Baldelli, gave up a middle-middle pitch to guy for a HR. Now there’s one out and nobody on…..he’s thrown maybe 10 pitches……should be able to get 2 outs! He gets one and then HE serves up another HR. The professional athletes need to get it done…..it’s difficult to achieve what Alcala did - hard to be that bad. 2.15 ERA entering the inning.
  20. Can’t believe that anybody would try to put ALCALA’s complete failure to do his job on Baldelli. After 4 pitches there were 2 runs in and a guy standing on 2nd. The 20/20 hindsight is out of control. What did your crystal ball tell you was to happen in the 8th & 9th after Jax pitched a perfect 7th? Just because there’s 6 other ways to approach a situation it doesn’t mean that what was done was in any way a mistake! The Manager did exactly what has been a formula for numerous wins……..Alcala was not focused, period.
  21. The guy threw 4 pitches to his required 3 batters and two runs were in with a guy on 2nd. His ERA is/was 2.15 entering the 7th inning. What’s the Manager supposed to do? Is he supposed to show zero composure? Is he supposed to get somebody loose when Alcala takes the mound with a 4 run lead? ALCALA is 110% at fault - Baldelli isn’t throwing letter high change-ups to Cory Seager nor center cut fastballs to other guys………,should Baldelli throw his hat and start swearing? He’s the Manager of 26 grown men and he’s not a fan. Not really sure what your expectations are of what his behavior should be? Other than a complete lack of offense after the 3rd inning, Alcala blew the game all on his own!
  22. Can’t be too cocky - pretty sure that after 2 deep starts his ERA is sub 2.00? Just hoping for a W.
  23. The reasoning with Varland having remained a starter through the year is due to necessity. Matthews has ONE MLB start. Varland has pitched, as a starter, in parts of 3 MLB seasons. There are 3 Rookies in our current rotation…..that was never the Plan. There’s nobody else that makes any sense as any sort of depth for the current rotation. One of them gets a blister, a sore shoulder, fatigue…….the games keep happening every day. Varland will remain in line and ready as a starter until September 15-20, at which point the Team will have to get him Pen ready and assume they will finish the last two weeks w/o any problems.
  24. Kepler’s double to get Santana to 3B & then Farmer’s sac fly created a nice cushion. Bullpen came up big with Jax & Duran off for the night. Ronny Henriquez!! Castro keeps up his steady play - not always flashy but he helps the Team win games day in & day out. Last night it was the big play in the 9th from the hole at SS & tonight a 2 RBI single…….he’s really been a key piece. Didn’t get to see Festa pitch but it appears he was solid enough for 5 innings. A sweep would be a nice shot of momentum going into next week!
