  1. DSPN was one of my favorite Twins during his time with the team, but I haven't kept much track of how he's been doing since then. Is it really so clear that he's going to hang it up after next year? I know he's been hurt and the Giants had been wanting to move him out of CF...
  2. I guess I wonder what distinguishes the hard-throwing reliever with questionable control they took from the one(s) they lost. First instinct is I'd rather have Bard still in the system than Kinley, but that probably has as much to do with valuing the guy I've heard of as anything.
  3. Agreed, and this year in particular, relief pitching seems to be a relative strength of a free-agent market that's fairly weak otherwise.
  4. So how does this work? I know there are restrictions on the number of coaches a team can have active, and remember when MLB officially allowed the 7th coach. But still only 6 can be on the field or in the dugout during a game?
  5. How's Castro doing vs. lefties this season? Seems like they could have afforded to use one of the two RH-hitting catchers on the bench here.
  6. I think it looks pretty ideal. Berrios might come with the greatest chance of coming out and pitching a really dominant game, but in a one-and-done elimination situation I'd rather see Santana, who I think is less likely to be undone by nerves. Then if they get to the DS they can bring Berrios out to set the tone in game 1 and have more options of how to line Santana up for another elimination game if needed.
  7. My thought exactly - what are they saving Vargas for?
  8. ... So much for that. Hill gives up the walk-off homer to start the 10th.
  9. Good night for pitching tonight - Rich Hill has no-hit the Pirates for 9 innings as of this writing, but the Dodgers haven't scored on their 8 hits. Hill is at 90-some pitches. Guessing he comes back out for the 10th. Meanwhile Ervin and James Shields (?!) are in a pitchers' duel...
  10. This half inning in the dugout must be Neil Allen's easiest coaching moment of the year. "OK, Kyle. What you just did? Do that."
  11. One small piece of evidence of turning the page on the old regime: Gardenhire's old number 35 has been assigned for the first time since he left (I think?...I've only noticed because I hoped they wouldn't get sentimental for all those first-round playoff exits and retire it.)
  12. Rooker's not going to be a way over-slot sign at 35, though, is he? Is there something else coming at 37 to use more of the pool money?
  13. Never mind, guess it's fixed now. For several minutes the play-by-play somehow completely skipped a few at-bats from the fifth: the ones taken by Eduardo Escobar, Eddie Rosario, and.... EDUARDO NUNEZ !?! Anti-Ed conspiracy?
  14. Apologies if this has already been covered, but when I was last on Gameday a few minutes ago it was still being weird. The score at the middle of the fifth read 5-3, but the play-by-play didn't show the fifth run scoring. Then the box showed Turley facing one batter in the bottom of the fifth, but again the play-by-play didn't show that play or batter. Any help translating?
  15. Guessing Hughes goes from the 10-day to the 60-day DL and either Heston or (Randy) Rosario goes to the minors
  16. All the pitchers you mentioned throw right-handed, including Haley. (This doesn't contradict your overall point at all, of course.)
  17. ...and actually, just saw the post-game mlb.com article about Mejia's first win, which suggested that the Twins could simply option Gibson back out after he starts.
  18. Correct me if I'm wrong here: The Twins reportedly optioned Mejia back to AAA after he pitched tonight, but since he was called up under the doubleheader 26th-man rule, there's no minimum time he has to stay in the minors before they recall him again (as opposed to staying in AAA for, I think, a 10-day minimum if this had been a "regular" recall and option.) They called up Gibson to start Monday and sent Hughes to the DL, but if there's no rainout, they would have needed another starter for Monday anyway. So the move created the roster spot they needed for Gibson, but Hughes' spot in the rotation is yet to be filled. If I understand the 26th-man rule right, they'll be free to recall Mejia on or before the day that rotation spot comes up (again, pending there being no rainouts). So he seems like the obvious choice for the rotation spot, but they'll still have to make room on the roster for him. If a rainout happens on the right day, they can skate by with 4 starters for another week. If they're able to play all the games, Mejia takes Hughes' spot next time around, and perhaps Breslow or (more likely) Wilk is on the bubble? A lot of roster maneuvering, hard to keep straight.
  19. As of this morning (4/17), Santana's start on 4/15 leads the majors in Game Score, with 92. The next 3 are tied at 86 - interestingly (though not surprisingly, given the small sample of games) all from this past weekend. http://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/topperformers/_/type/pitching
  20. Do you think O'Rourke vomits before each appearance because he's always getting sent in to face a bunch of right-handed hitters?
  21. Is it possible that "Vargas at third" signals that that's a joke?
  22. What about Polanco leading off instead of Buxton? I'd bet on Polanco's on-base skills and strike zone control right now.
  23. BB-Ref lists it as "AY-ray AY-dree-an-zuh" for some reason. Names are not as phonetically regular as most of the Spanish language is, but I'd put money on that not being how his Venezuelan mama has ever pronounced his name.
  24. And cross Desmond Jennings off as a fourth-outfielder candidate. Apparently he's going to sign a minor-league deal with the Reds. I can think of reasons why the Twins wouldn't have or couldn't have beat that offer, but I think Jennings would have made sense in their outfield mix.
  25. Somewhat more interested in Romo or Blanton, but Smith could be useful.
