  1. At the same time, IIRC Boyer is on the 15-day DL, so I'm guessing that if they needed to add someone for September, moving Boyer to the 60-day would be the easiest and first thing to do to clear a roster spot.
  2. Do you think Bowden sees the bigs with the Twins? The bullpen is crowded (leaving quality aside, just speaking of quantity) and I think the 40-man is full, but do they find a way to give him a look?
  3. Anybody know why McClendon gave up the DH, seemingly unnecessarily?
  4. Fair point about the Tigers selling high. What I meant was more that this deal may be an indication that the Tigers are preparing to rebuild or at least to retool significantly. Unless I missed some report about the Tigers giving up on re-signing Price (they do like to spend, after all), I think we know more about their likelihood of being a serious bidder for him today than we did yesterday.
  5. Not sure whether this is jumping the gun on making a thread when the deal isn't done and the early report is just now coming out, but that report is that the Jays are getting David Price from the Tigers. Source Presumable ramifications for the Twins: * Toronto is just behind them for a wild-card spot and is loading up. ...which doesn't bother me that much. The Twins might possibly ride a few small improvements and some better luck to hang on for a wild-card spot, but if they don't, there's a longer-term window for them to improve. Toronto is likely feeling a more urgent window to contend than the Twins are. * Detroit is entering a rebuild phase to some degree and/or they didn't expect to resign Price. I think this is good for the Twins any way you slice it. I don't see the Tigers fully blowing up their current team, but it'd be nice not to have Price beating up on the Twins as often as in-division matchups would have it.
  6. Fan favorites include Brian Dozier (All-Star 2B), Glen Perkins (All-Star reliever and local kid made good), Trevor Plouffe (long-ago first-round draftee who turned into a solid 3B after seemingly years not really standing out in the minor-league wilderness) and Torii Hunter (veteran outfielder who returned to MN, his first team, as a free agent.) A rather divisive erstwhile fan favorite is Joe Mauer (1B, former C) who switched positions after a concussion left him at too-high risk playing behind the plate. He's no longer the hitter he was, he plays a position with a lot of great hitters around the league, he makes a lot of money, and he's also a locally born-and-raised guy, which adds to the divisiveness somehow. The team's two best minor-league prospects over the last couple years have both made the majors this year- Sano and Buxton, as described above. Sano seems reasonably likely not to see the minors again except for injury rehab, but Buxton may make another pass through the minors (and will need injury rehab, as he's on the disabled list now.) Hope you and your kid enjoy the Wings!
  7. Realignment into two 15-team leagues makes a certain amount of interleague play a mathematical necessity where it wasn't before. If that were somehow not a factor, I'm not sure whether I would prefer more, less or no interleague play. It seems like it changes an aesthetic aspect of the game but at the root I'm not sure it really matters much to the experience of a fan. I don't think interleague play alone should push the leagues toward a universal DH. I do wish they would re-balance the unbalanced schedule, though...
  8. I don't really know anything about most of these amateur players, but did it seem like Austin Rei, the college catcher drafted right after the Twins picked in round 3, might have been a good choice?
  9. Did the organization completely give up on Beresford playing shortstop? I remember reading that he's playing second base now and wondering whether that's holding back his chances at a big-league utility infielder job.
  10. I can't go find it now, but someone (Gleeman maybe) wrote an article in a recent season on how Hunter's image as a positive character presence has persisted despite his having had public disputes with teammates and having made a number of controversial-at-least public statements over the years. Through all of this he never stopped being accessible and gregarious to the media, and the implication was this keeps reporters writing about him in such a positive light, despite some contrary evidence. People can disagree about the propriety of some things Hunter has said and done, and I don't mean to derail this post into an argument over that, but how the media and Hunter's image mutually benefit one another is a valid question and the reason why I don't take articles like this very seriously.
  11. This is not directly related to the above, but I just was looking over the Chattanooga roster - do they really not have a single left-handed pitcher on that team?
  12. "Fire up the Speculation Machine, Sherman!" "Mr. Peabody, should I activate the Mauer Diagnosis and Career Management attachment?" "Yes, yes, of course, now hop to it!"
  13. This occurred to me as well; I hope that's the thinking, at least. Even beyond the "why jerk Hicks around" question, if they really expect it to be only 2 weeks, that seems a justifiable reason to choose a player just because they want to get him exposed to the majors. If it's not that...then it's puzzling.
  14. I agree that this will be an issue in the long term, but if they wanted to get Sano's feet wet in the majors later in the summer (and I don't think they should be in a hurry to do that yet), it can work for a partial season. If they think he's ready for a trial, Sano can be a part-time starter for a few months without it hurting his development. Rotate him in at DH and let him start a few games at 3B while Plouffe rests or takes a spot start at 1B or LF. Sano could take Nunez' spot and you wouldn't miss much besides a third-string shortstop.
  15. Keeping Nolasco in the minors for another rehab start also might have been a good call.
  16. Gibson's minor league K rates would suggest that he could improve a little in that area in the majors, even if that rate never became really dominant. I have minor but legitimate worry about a scenario where Gibson roughly holds steady this year, the Twins need room for May and/or Meyer at mid-season, Nolasco and Milone are unmovable, and Gibson gets traded and takes the envisioned big step forward while pitching somewhere else.
  17. Interestingly, though, the Mets traded for two lefty relievers today. I think it makes little ultimate difference to the Twins since they're already likely to go light on LHP in order to make room for Boyer, Pelfrey, Graham; I don't see Gilmartin sticking with this team either. But maybe a minor trade for the Mets to keep him will net someone interesting.
  18. While it is true that the third spring training has almost passed since those trades, they were effectively two seasons ago. Everyone at the time knew that Meyer and May were about two seasons away, one of them has already debuted, and they're both likely to be in the majors for good this year. There are absolutely things to criticize about the player acquisition and management record of this team, but what is your point here?
  19. Now here's a money quote. This rivals Gardenhire - or anyone really - for saying nothing and needing a lot of words to say it.
  20. It's destiny. Dust off your Duensing trade rumors! http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/14/mets-monitoring-the-left-handed-reliever-market/
  21. Hey Seth, fun to read your report, but one little thing - if you want people reading this to know what actually happened on that Pelfrey play, you may want to describe it a bit more - nowhere is it actually mentioned that he threw his glove. Fortunately the video was on mlb.com, but I had no idea what was going on from the description above (which isn't just on you, but has a lot to do with Pelfrey and Molitor giving talk-a-lot-say-nothing quotes.)
  22. Ryan: "[Arcia] was a pretty good minor league outfielder. We got him up underneath that darn overhang out there (at Target Field), and he just didn't read that very well and, of course, the ball is bouncing all over and that made him look bad." So the GM of the team is complaining about the architectural feature that makes it harder for the players to play. Why did they build it that way in the first place? These quirks are supposed to give the building character - great, but why put that ahead of the quality of play (the "product") on the field, which suffers from this feature? Maybe there's a reason I don't know, just as there may be a reason for that ridiculous hill in center field in Houston.
  23. Victorino would have made a ton of sense for the Twins before they signed Torii (as several other outfielders would have...grrrr) but I don't think he makes sense now - hasn't played CF since leaving Philly several years ago, right?
