  1. Always surprised what I might find in the game thread. Tonight, an impassioned defense of the under appreciated Tito Jackson!
  2. Toronto has been doing the :07 start times for years. I think they think it is cute? Anyhow, I am calling a four game sweep and Twins atop the wild card race by Thursday. Also, stick a fork in 'em.
  3. It seems to me that TR could have easily gotten someone at least as good, if not better, than Jepsen a couple of weeks ago for a similar price. Like, during the All-Star break.
  4. The TR mantra--aim for mediocrity, and there is a good chance you will succeed!
  5. Touché. Shields put up 7.4 WAR for KC in two seasons. Myers didn't do much so far (but still could post more than 7.4). If the Twins trade Sano, people would flip out.
  6. The headlines for the Twins on MLB.com...Molitor says upgrade "not a necessity"....Ryan "open to trade, but won't force it." Hmmm, not hard to see what the expectations are being lowered to here. I guess the over-under should be set at 0.5, and I am leaning towards the under.
  7. I think the Shields-Myers trade comparison is a pretty bad comparison. Myers was a top-10 or top-5 prospect, and Shields, who is good, bad not great, only had a year and a month left. Tulo is the best player at an up-the-middle position, with five years of team control. People criticized that Shields trade because it was lopsided. If Terry Ryan traded Miguel Sano for 1.5 years of Jhonny Peralta, they would criticize that too.
  8. If the Twins stand pat, I will be disappointed, but not surprised. Last year, Ryan extended Suzuki instead of trading him, and shockingly, he reverted to his established career norms. Terry Ryan is just way too conservative for my taste. I feel like the Tulo opportunity was a huge miss...one that only comes along very infrequently. Honestly, I am half-expecting that he will find a way to sell low on Plouffe....and then Sano will wind up ending to move off of third. People are joking about a Torii extension...but I could see it.
  9. So, those two examples are players who put up 3-4 WAR per season in their decline phase after 30. Usually WAR costs $5-6mm per WAR on the free market. It's true that you might not get as much WAR as they would be paying for in a trade for Tulo...but I don't see another likely way for the Twins to add 3-4 WAR per season at SS. And they might be getting some of those 5 WAR seasons from Tulo (like he has posted 5 of the past 6 years), which they certainly won't get from any other option. Opportunities to add elite players don't come along very often. The Twins have never done it via FA. The fact that they have conversations with the Rockies about it...and that Dozier might be pushing it internally...increases the chance it happens to above zero, I think.
  10. Brock--Glad to see you changing gears on this, as you had been consistently opposed. I continue to think this is a perfect storm for the Twins to land Tulo...position of glaring need, payroll flexibility, deep farm system, prospects now starting to contribute, and a quicker-than-expected chance at the playoffs. What if TR put the following 5 players on his "untouchable" list: Dozier, Buxton, Sano, Berrios, and Gibson? Is there still a deal that would work? Would Gonsalves, Gordon, Arcia/Kepler, F. Jorge, and Duensing be enough to make it happen?
  11. So, to be absolutely clear here, you think Kyle Gibson is (currently and moving forward) a more valuable player than Troy Tulowitzki, and that you think it isn't even close?
  12. Agree. While Gibson shows some promise, he has low K rates and moving from Gibson to Tulo would be a massive upgrade. Plus, as goulik points out, we have May as a replacement (with Berrios, and hopefully Meyer, behind).
  13. A couple weeks back I started a forum in the wrong place ("other baseball") about trading for Tulo. It was generally a pipe dream thread starter, and the comments generally acknowledged that. Then I again posted in the "trading prospects thread" of the perfect logic and timing of trading for Tulo, but speculated that TR was too inherently cautious and fond of prospects to make such a bold move. This article, and Jeremy's "little birds" changes a lot, though. This could happen. It's a perfect storm of a position of need, an unexpectedly quick path to competitiveness, an available elite player, a deep farm system, and cap space. If the Twins put together an "untouchable" list (Dozier, Sano, Buxton...plus maybe Berrios...not sure Gibson merits that list), but offer Rockies their choice of a three-player package of MLB players / prospects, I would think it could be done. And the Twins should do it. Tulo has put up 5+WAR 6 times in his career--that's one more 5WAR season than Mauer. He's younger than Mauer. Even if he is only a 4WAR player now in decline, he should put up 4/3.5/3/2.5/2 WAR from now until 2020. And that's conservative. Strike while the iron is hot!
  14. I suggest you alternate between both, and sometimes in the same comment, just to keep it fresh.
  15. The Royals got 5.2 scoreless from their pen, but still managed to lose the nightcap, so the Twins gained ground.
  16. Attaboy Brian. 5 zip after 8, Santana with 7.67 shutout innings.
  17. The Green Mile rerun detail is what made the joke, I think.
  18. I'd just like to say...the foul territory in Oakland really is kind of ridiculous.
  19. Sano was tagging at first, and Plouffe almost passed him. That was a sky-high flyball that just seemed to keep sailing.
  20. Good eye, and good ability to check his swing.
