  1. This is a stretch, but here goes: Joe Mauer put up a mediocre season (by his standards), but still netted 2.2WAR--according to Fangraphs--which at 8.5mm per WAR, is $18.7mm. Not too much below his contract, actually. And most importantly, he put another year (his third, I believe) between himself and that concussion. Let me remind people that Morneau took about three years before really coming back from his concussion...and then he won a batting title. Can Mauer follow the same path?
  2. Two thought: 1-Manship was ranked WAY too low. 2-The positions prospects must have been amazing. (Or alternatively, "you should see the other guy!")
  3. I posted this before, but since this thread is specifically about De Leon, let me repeat it. If/when De Leon joins the Twins, the pair of Berrios and De Leon are going to need a joint nickname. I suggested Dos X Maquina, where the X, of course, stands for Puerto Rico.
  4. While teams usually pack up and fly it after the Rule 5 draft...the brand new, massive MGM Casino is opening at National Harbor this evening. Just saying.
  5. To me the biggest news was the fact that the Nats offered Giolito, Robles and Reynaldo Lopez for Chris Sale, and that offer wasn't enough, as the White Sox instead opted for Moncada. If these sorts of packages are being offered, are we positive Urias is untouchable? The general sentiment around these parts is, yeah, he's a non-starter, so don't even bother. But maybe seeing these sorts of prospects offered will alter some thinking about what can be asked for and what is offered.
  6. If the Nats are indeed willing to trade Lucas Giolito and Victor Robles for Chris Sale, what is the Twins' equivalent? I think it would be Buxton and Berrios. Yikes. That would be steep price to pay.
  7. Can I just point out that I can't remember the Twins involved in a serious trade drama since...Johan? Terry Ryan simply never was willing to consider trading sell-high guys, let alone build a market for those guys. It really is the dawn of a new era.
  8. "The LA #Dodgers are the most aggressive team in trade talks with the #Twins for 2B Brian Dozier, and have now piqued Minnesota's interest." A rumor, yes...but doesn't that sound like they are willing to offer a player that Minnesota was requiring?
  9. I also assumed that all would be offered arbitration once Plouffe was cut. But isn't the 40-man full, and don't they need to drop one in order to pick up a Rule 5 pick? Also, the Winter Meetings are in DC at the National Harbor, not Houston.
  10. I don't know, it seems like a fitting way to end this season is on an 8-game win streak to avoid 100 losses, while Atlanta loses their final 8, and sneaks off with the #1 pick in the tiebreak.
  11. Five games up with 11 to play. I think the magic number is 7. If the Twins lose their next 7 games, they would be at a minimum up 5 with 4 games to play. (Atlanta holds the tiebreaker).
  12. If the Twins go 9-9 down the stretch, they will finish 62-100, right? Therefore they need to go 10-8 to avoid 100. I'd vote for 18: Race for #1 pick. 2.5 game lead with 18 to go. Getting the first pick could have a very big impact on the organization.
  13. True story. About those daycare costs. True story.
  14. Fair enough. He really had no shot. Something about a ball rolling in the outfield while the go ahead run in the 8th circles the bases and the outfielder stops running after it....still bugs me.
  15. I disagree with the premise of this article, that Kepler vs Buxton has become no contest. Stepping back, here are their numbers: Kepler Minors: 1879PA, 280/363/445/809 Majors: 338PA, 252/332/473/805 Buxton Minors: 1669PA, 284/364/450/815 Majors: 356PA, 199/248/319/567 Yes, Buxton hasn't succeeded in 356 MLB at bats. Yes, Kepler has had a great rookie season, in the running for ROY. But careers are long, and tracks records tend to show up in the long term. Plus Buxton offers elite-level defense at an up-the-middle position. Luckily the Twons don't have to choose between Buxton and Kepler, but it is in my opinion definitely not "no contest" in favor of Kepler. As an SSS aside, Buxton has homered in four straight minor league contests, while Kepler's game-losing Torii Hunter vs Oakland-ish play yesterday afternoon in the 8th (with Rosario's subsequent giving up) should rival Arcia's bicycle-kick play for the metaphor for the Twins' season.
  16. But did you get the car at a Mauer dealership? For what it's worth, Morneau took the knee to the head in 2010 at age 29, and then won a batting title in 2014 and posted another 300+ BA in 2015. Mauer was sidelined with his (worst) concussion in 2013 at age 30. Next year he will be four years removed from the injury. It stands to reason he could have a good last two years on his contract. Hopefully it will be for a competitive Twins team.
  17. Plus, by voiding his cheap 2017 option, wouldn't that work better for him? Wouldn't he want to hit the free agent market after this season?
  18. Doesn't seem like he's leveraging it...just using it to pick places he doesn't like.
  19. That is wild. Can't remember every hearing of that happen before. And here I was thinking now that Lucroy was off the market, Suzuki would be able to be moved. I suppose that Suzuki to the Indians would work.
  20. If Antony trades all of Nolasco's contract for Sierra and Austin Barnes, we might have to think hard about having him stay on as GM. Barnes seems like the best catching scenario out there. Philly is the other team with catching depth, but they aren't buyers. So the Dodgers are the best bet. I hope that Antony is trying hard to acquire him. Great article, by the way. Really interesting proposals. (Clevinger ideas sound great.)
  21. I just think it might be worthwhile cornering the Adalberto market.
  22. Did Nolasco create a teeny-tiny glimmer of a market with his start last night? Eight shutout innings, plus a standard-issue lead-off homer?
