    Don’t the Twins have until tomorrow to sign Jenkins? I’d like to assume that this delay is simply about trying to get one of the two late HS draft picks to sign,..but seems like it is a bit down to the wire.

    What exactly is this MLB Draft League and how do the players wind up there? I took a quick perusal of the website and they succeeded in having dozens of kids drafted each of the last three years. Twins took Santos, Lee and Cossetti from this league.

    This is a fascinating insight: “Spending two years in the ACC, it felt a lot more like business and just having to be on the good side of the coaches if you wanted playing time. If you didn’t fit their mold in their program, you just weren’t going to cut it. I believe those big schools end up picking their favorites and leaving a lot of kids in the dust.” Makes you wonder how meritocratic baseball really is. Are the kids of former ballplayers really better than their teammates or do they get more chances because of their name?

    I mentioned this before, but the Twins could go 5% over their pool to add an extra $717K to their draft pool—which they have never done unlike 28 other MLB teams. Wonder if an extra $700K added to an offer could be the difference between signing or not signing Ashton Larson.

    I actually saw Tanner Hall pitch in a game at Coastal Carolina in April. He gave up 7 walks and 5 runs in 3 innings. Apparently his only loss in conference all year, and more than 20% of his walks all year. Not sure what to make of that. Hopefully he does well for the Twins.

    Something I found interesting in an article by Callis on the draft slots. Last year 23 of 30 teams exceeded their draft pool (which you can do by up to 5% without losing any picks; it’s simply a financial hit of 75% surcharge on the overage) while the Twins (and Rockies) have NEVER exceeded their draft pool. This year, with a draft pool of $14.35mm, the Twins could spend an extra $717K this year (which would cost an additional $500K in tax), which is not an insignificant amount. Essentially, the Twins are purposely shorting themselves some draft capital that almost all other teams are taking advantage of.

    Great article. This kid has shown a lot of perseverance to get to this point. The progression over three years at UNC is impressive. It’s also interesting to see how a player can use a year at IMG Academy, which you hear mentioned a lot, to springboard to a big college program (not just to get drafted out of high school). Would be nice to see the Twins get him at #82….

    The one thing we know for sure is that the Twins will walk away from today with three picks in a very deep draft. If they go under slot with their first pick, they should wind up with even stronger picks at 34 and 49. By the end of the day, how many pitchers and how many prep kids will they have ultimately selected? How would a: Dollander - González - Eldridge first day be rated?

    If the Twins have Jacob González ranked as their fifth best player, have $14-15mm to spend, and he’s projected as the 15-20th pick / prospect by many lists, then the Front Office needs to figure out a way to get him at pick #34. my personal preference would be Dollander at five, giving him more money than we would get if he were to go in the 10-15 range many outlets are projecting, but under slot. And then give all those savings to González.

    Law also has Langford going #1 to the Pirates and Crews falling to the Tigers at 3. There are probably 10 players I’d prefer the Twins draft before González: Crews - Skenes - Langford - Teel - Dollander - Lowder - Shaw - Troy - Bradfield - Clark Not sure on Jenkins.

    From Keith Law’s last mock draft, he has González going to the Twins at #5, over Jenkins. He writes: “Several sources have told me that if Crews and Langford are gone, Gonzalez is the top player in the Twins’ draft model and he’d be the pick over the high schoolers…”

    Skenes has had an amazing spring. It was exceptional, and it sure seems like he is going to become a great MLB pitcher, quickly. But… It’s only one season. Could he revert to his prior performance level he put up for the two previous years at the Air Force? (He was also mediocre on the Cape in limited innings.) He struck out 15/9IP at LSU. That rate is going to tick down. He gave up 5H/9, and 0.5HR/9 last year. Those numbers are going to get worse. He only has two above average pitches. Usually players with two pitches are “destined for the bullpen.” A year ago, Dollander was considered way better than Skenes. Now Skenes is considered way better than Dollander. Which is it? I think the answer is Skenes, and if the Twins wind up with him, I’d be thrilled. But there are legit reasons to not be 100% certain Skenes is a slam dunk.

    The scenario where they get Dollander at 34 involves saving a LOT of money from the first pick…which might happen if it’s Wilson or González?
