  1. They don't have to play great to get in, but if they continue to play as they are, they won't be winning many playoff games. Which I believe is the goal...
  2. Lewis' clutchness seems like he adds another 5+ wins to this team. Even in the midst of a slump he saves the team with that HR.
  3. Lopez picked the right time of the year to get hot! He does seem to struggle in the early months and dominate later in the summer. I'll have to look at his splits as a Marlin to confirm this.
  4. No waiver claims for the Vikings, they only lost Nwangwu to the Saints on waivers. Practice squads will fill up now, I suspect they add another RB. Could be to the PS to start and promote him to the 53 man later. Yup, they already have. He and McCain are the two confirmed PS names right now.
  5. The bullpen mopped up this game shockingly well... too bad Ober's abysmal start didn't let them get back into this game.
  6. Except for a similar play Jorge threw away in the playoffs against the Astros…
  7. Yup, this summarizes my concern. The young arms are promising but it's hard to rely on them for enough innings, and the bullpen does not have the horses to cover this many innings. Joe Ryan going down and the total failure of adding relievers in the offseason + deadline are the biggest factors.
  8. I won't defend the pinch-hitting nonsense, but are we really expecting Rocco to treat Julien like a reliever and pull him when he makes mistakes? Hasn't he been better fielding at 2B, and is there any precedent for him getting spelled late with a defensive replacement? I dunno, I think this is over-analysis. At some point, poor play has to be pinned on the player and not the manager. Matthews has some nasty stuff, if he can get that pitch count down he might be able to get a little further into games. He has a bright future.
  9. I don't see the argument against Gray. His numbers are very strong and his FIP suggests his ERA will decrease. Of course it's risky to pay pitchers into their mid-30s, but do you the Cardinals regret handing out that deal? Absolutely not.
  10. Sorry, I didn't realize that. I assumed it was a typical PH, else the injury would have been in the game's summary.
  11. Seems like some of the hitters are running out of steam, some are falling back to earth after getting hot this summer. Can't be surprised that this collection of pitchers who threw tonight gave up 6 runs. This team needed reinforcements. Obviously there's no replacing Buxton and Correa so it's hard to be too critical of the lineup struggling, but still. Why is Farmer pinch-hitting for Jeffers in any situation? I'm fine with platooning pinch hitters but not the likes of Margot and Farmer! Since when did Goldschmidt have a sub .700 OPS? And Arenado is having a career worst season at the plate, that's a lot of money between those two. Not really related to this game but feels like their dominance of the past 10+ years is over.
  12. Not surprising to see a rookie starter implode, it happens. It'd just be nice to not have to use him in the midst of a pennant race.
  13. Rough loss, but winning 3 out of 4 is pretty dang good. Just pull Alcala earlier and it's likely a sweep.
  14. Way too early to sell low on Julien, whereas I think Kirilloff is at the end of his rope. Julien at least took a big step up defensively at 2B while Kirilloff has proven he is a poor fielder at all positions. And health-wise Julien is in a far better spot. This is Eddy's first poor year, Alex has had more than enough fair shakes by this point. A Rooker-like resurgence is possible but you can't count on that happening. He did hit better than I remembered in 2023 but the questions regarding his health and his defensive positioning still loom large.
  15. Hey, Mahle is back pitching again. Time to run up the score on him!
  16. Solid job getting 2 of 3 from a scrappy Royals team. Still concerned with the bullpen, they are gonna be exposed if they're putting Thielbar and Richards out there in playoff games. They really need to move Varland to the pen but they don't have the depth to do that.
  17. Nice job jumping out to a solid lead to support the rookie starter.
  18. Ugh. I was hoping to see JJ get some starts in the second half of the season but I’m doubtful on that now. Some recent Vikings torn meniscus examples who got the full repair are Adrian Peterson, who came back Week 15 IIRC and Irv Smith Jr who missed the whole 2021 season. JJ likely doesn’t get rushed back.
  19. Paying Polanco $12M to be a replacement level player seems like a fairly big hinderance to the team - I think they were right to get what trade value they could out of him. That doesn't justify the blunders they made elsewhere, of course.
  20. This has been a lose-lose trade, as both sides have to be very disappointed with what they've received. It is apparent the Twins picked the right time to trade Polanco, but as one who liked the trade initially, that was given Topa would actually pitch and Gonzalez's stock wouldn't immediately plummet (and I was expecting a follow-up trade a la the Garver/IKF trade). And even though the trade freed up some money to spend, that wasn't exactly spent on quality additions.
  21. I hate to be that guy who brings this topic up, but this is why the failure to make additions at the deadline is going to cost this team. Acquired a reliever who was DFA-able and he implodes when you need him. Didn't add another lefty so Thielbar is locked onto a roster spot despite how hittable he is. And if Ryan is hurt for a longer stretch of time, then it looks foolish to forego picking up a back-end starter. I wasn't asking for any of the top prospects to be moved, but they could have at least bolstered the depth in the pitching staff. Now it's time to lay in the bed they made. Kudos to Winder for going 3 scoreless innings. It'd be great if he could have a Sands-like evolution from AAAA starter to MLB reliever. I think Varland can do that but now more than ever they need him for starting depth.
  22. Really a bummer to see Lopez so inconsistent. He just needs to get hot... but he's gotta do that soon. Unfortunately it seems Martin is the guy I thought he was. Not as good at contact as some think (the Arraez comparisons he was getting at the start of the year were ridiculous), and he didn't get the proper time in the minors to hone his ability to play in the outfield. Factor in his arm and lack of power... that's not a good combo.
