  1. If Varland and Alcala continue to deal, I hope the likes of Tonkin and Castellano don't stand in their way. I find it very doubtful that Tonkin lasts half the season on the roster like the other middling vets we tried last year (Jay Jackson, Staumont, Okert). Alcala has nothing left to gain pitching in the minors anyways.
  2. I wouldn't be surprised if they went down to 3 catchers on the 40 man roster, and I wonder about what the team thinks of Camargo the way they avoided using him in the majors last year. I don't think Gasper is going to be a factor as a catcher. If he was going to push for a backup catcher role, he's gotta convert to being a full-time (if not most-time) catcher. Until that happens I don't see it.
  3. The way some folks (mainly those writing articles here) talk about France act as if we won a bidding war to sign him whereas his contract guarantees him nothing. Now it's evident he'll be on the team and for at least the start of the year will get a lot of PAs, but it's essentially a minor league contract, implying that other teams didn't see him as other of being on a major league roster. This has shades of Logan Morrison, who was also 30 at the time of signing...
  4. While SWR did run out of gas at the end of the year and I am leery of his stuff holding up... well, you can say the same and worse about Paddack, who has only been healthy enough to cross enough 100 innings twice in his career, and he has very hittable (10.4 hits/9, 1.4 HR/9). What would there be to gain to start SWR in AAA? He should be locked in the rotation to start the year.
  5. While I don't find moving on from Rooker to be a big blunder on our front office compared to others, I'm down for giving Julien more chances to see if he can rebound rather than France can get back to being a replacement level player to maybe a little more. The situations are different too as Rooker couldn't shift to 1B/DH with Sano/Cruz filling those and he was a butcher in the outfield and actively hurt the team when he was out there. Meanwhile the current competition at 2B and 1B is very lackluster and there is absolutely going to be PAs for Julien to prove himself if they let him.
  6. Let's put this to the test, going back to 2019 let's look at our top prospects: Royce Lewis - Hit Alex Kirilloff - Miss Brusdar Graterol - Mixed bag as he has been an above average reliever Trevor Larnach - Mixed bag so far Austin Martin - Poor debut Brooks Lee - Rough debut Eduard Julien - Great rookie year, terrible sophomore year Walker Jenkins, Emmanuel Rodriguez - TBD Looks like a mix of good and bad to me. In hindsight perhaps, but few here had that opinion. He was Twins Daily's #1 prospect in 2022...
  7. Here's what Fangraphs has: Basically nothing at 1B...
  8. We went through the same thing last year with Santana where some where claiming that he'd have to compete with Kirilloff to be the starting 1B... it's France's job to lose.
  9. Sonny Gray's 2 years before becoming a Twin: 5.16 innings pitched per game Gray's Twins career: 5.75 innings per start Gray with the Cardinals: 5.94 innings per start Jose Berrios last 3.5 years with the Twins: 6.01 innings per start Berrios' career as a Blue Jay: 5.78 innings per start Pablo Lopez previous 3 years in Miami: 5.4 innings per start Lopez as a Twin: 5.93 innings per start Rocco doesn't pull his starters any quicker than other managers in baseball, it may seem like it but when he has his better starters in the game he keeps them pitching at a similar rate to the rest of the league. Innings pitched are going down league-wide, that's just a reality, likely one that will continue once Rocco is done managing this team.
  10. Whoa, only on a minor league deal? I'd absolutely take him over Tonkin and Topa.
  11. I don't think they opened a 40 man spot for him just so he could be a long shot. IMO the lowest odds he has of making it is 50-50 but I'd bet on him making the team.
  12. Adding on to this, I think the other primary issue they have is that they aren't developing our prospects' defensive abilities in the minors, or their focus on bat-first players causes them to take players who will never find a defensive home. How many prospects have come up over the past 6-8 years and be able to hold up defensively at any position? They have to continue rotating through a mixed bag of veteran bench players because they don't have prospects in the farm system who can supplement the position.
  13. I will defend the Coulombe signing because they had nothing for left-handed pitching in the bullpen and he was shockingly good last year, but the rest of the signings are underwhelming. I'm also not happy about Tonkin seemingly being handed a spot in the pen when it seems like a near lock that he will be DFA'd by June. The issue with the pitching prospects getting added to the 40 man roster is that they're kept as starters too long, then they either get hurt or are ineffective and then move to the pen and don't get much of a chance before getting DFA'd. Examples include Winder, Balazovic, Varland. Alcala was still starting games in AAA when it was apparent he was only ever going to function as a reliever. I think Henriquez and Headrick are marginal prospects and were never viewed as anything more.
  14. Not a fan of this move... but I am glad to see it is only for $1M that isn't guaranteed. I thought he had more power, but looking through his numbers I'm surprised by the lack of HRs. He is a career .263/.337 hitter but he's on a downward trend... and a poor defender. I'd much rather see if Miranda or Julien can handle 1B. Miranda at least has had streaks where he is a top 3 hitter on this team and Julien was great in 2023, for France you have to hope he goes back to being his 2022 self or else he is a replacement level player or worse. I'm fine with the move if they give Miranda a legit shot and don't pigeon-hole themselves into 400 questionable PAs from France if not.
  15. I think it's too early to say that, he'll be 23 this year and a good year at AA could really raise his stock. Though the Severino comparison is similar. You'd think the next step would be trying him out at 1B?
  16. How is the infield full? We don't know if Lee is going to be able to hold down a job full-time, and who is going to back up the infield? I don't see a guy on the 40 man roster who is going to back up SS or 3B unless they are adding Urias or DeJong.
  17. And even shorter, too! I hadn't heard of him when I saw him when I was at a Saints game last year, and I was wondering who this short guy was. I was surprised to see how fast he arrived in AAA when I did my research on him.
  18. Festa was already better as a rookie than Paddack, it would be very disappointing if he regresses.
  19. I was surprised Helman lasted this long on the roster, based on the multiple times he had been passed on for a call-up. Maybe the Cardinals will get something out of him, it'd be a fun story to see some MLB success for him.
  20. They went into last year with Farmer as the primary "backup" infielder while Castro was the utility guy and were willing to spend to get Farmer back, so I don't think they are planning on moving Willi. I can't blame them for not wanting to trust the likes of Martin and Helman defensively.
  21. There are different styles of 3-4 OLB, Jonathan Greenard is one but he rarely drops into coverage and just had by far his best season after playing the first four years of his career as a 4-3 DE. Van Ginkel drops into coverage more than any other 3-4 OLB in the game, and Turner dropped into coverage a lot as well. Pat Jones was more in Greenard's type and rarely drops back too. Garrett would be fine like Greenard and Hunter.
  22. Taylor has caught some strays in this thread, but Baseball Reference has him at 1.9 WAR for his 2023 season even despite his inability to get on base. Getting that out of Bader would be nice. I do agree with those saying that this is a "floor" move. It's a move the front office needed to make because they can't develop their own CF backup from the minors... it's been years and we're still waiting.
  23. I was expecting a veteran addition to the outfield, but this is a bit more than I thought they'd spend. Clearly there was an emphasis to make a defensive upgrade to Margot and find somebody who can fill CF while Buxton is out, and they were not going to go with Martin and Kiersey as their top OF backups. Heck, I wouldn't be shocked if Kiersey if DFA'd to make room. But it's hard to be excited given how consistently poor Bader has been as a hitter, the last three years come out to about .240/.280 with some power. .280 OBP is gonna be rough. Hey, at least the lineup has some base-stealing potential with Bader. Speed is something this lineup lacked.
  24. I think Garrett would be a fine 3-4 OLB, Danielle Hunter made the transition just fine and both are crazy top tier athletes. The demand for Garrett will be very high and it's likely the Vikings would get outbid quickly. And I think he could absolutely fetch 2 1sts. Lawrence would be a pipe dream, but I don't think the Giants have any desire to move him. He is another guy that teams would bid up his price if it were made known that he was available.
  25. I suggested this a few days ago, I’m glad they made a move to sign a lefty for the pen.
