    So let’s see - we have a below average hitter with no power. We have a well below average fielder with a poor arm. He has speed but makes mistakes on the base paths. So to answer the question I’m not encouraged by his rookie season. Doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on him but if I’m running the team he would start in St Paul with a chance to earn his way up to the bigs. To me he looks like a guy that is going to have to improve quite a bit to even be a fourth outfielder.

    Normally I would be against a move like this. In this case I am not. Jax is a completely different pitcher now than when he started previously. I don’t see the “risk” others do other than a possible increase in injury risk. If he isn’t good as a starter he can go back to the pen easily. With payroll constraints this might be the only way the Twins add a playoff caliber starter. I think it is possible that he could end up being better than Ober and Ryan.

    Let’s put it this way. If he pitches well in St Paul (better than last year) he will get a chance at some point. Teams need upwards of 8 starters and 10-12 relievers.

    This. One of the first steps in assessing data is a simple test for reasonableness. By looking at the Twins offense one would surmise that there is noise in the data. For example: the Twins seem to try and pull everything. In your scenario any thing in the air to left is being counted as a good outcome. Maybe there are a bunch of sliders on the outside corner that get pulled to left and have no chance of doing damage?

    I should have written my post differently. I’m not saying Martin can’t be a contributor but the premise was he could replace Martin this year which is the part I described as laughable. To answer your question I’m not sure he has a “best” position. With a bunch of reps he could be average in LF and a stop gap in CF.

    I fully believe the Pohlads intend to sell. However I also believe they will not accept an offer they don’t deem to be to their liking. So yea I won’t be surprised if they don’t sell.

    The biggest difference in the field which is important for a utility guy IMO. Castro is plus at 3 positions and passable at SS and CF. Martin is pretty bad anywhere you play him.

    The “depth” you cite behind Jax consists of one guy - Cole Sands. Counting on the rest of that injured inconsistent bunch is how you end up with crappy bullpens.

    The notion that Martin can take Castros place is laughable.

    With this lineup we aren’t going to be a basestealing team. I just want the mistakes to be reduced. We gave away far too many outs by making fundamental mistakes on the bases.

    For me the most important point is whether the orgs hitting philosophy will change. If not I am not sure it matters who the coach is. I will say that Falvey has generally done really well with his coaching hires.

    The ages on this list are 22-25. None of these guys will be big leaguers.

    The pipeline will have arrived when these guys are effective pitchers in the big leagues. The biggest hurdle is still in front of them.

    Another great article - I learn something with each one of them. I did not know Lemon had been in the bigs for so long before the move to Minnesota. Stories about the Cuban players would be very interesting. I bet they went through a lot to get here. A story about Papa Joe Cambria would be great as well.

    This simply isn’t happening. First there is no surplus value in the contract so you would likely have to throw in a prospect to make something happen. Second players only waive their no trade if they get something out of the deal (ie $$$$ guarantees contract extension). Who is ponying up for that? Third the Twins have no above average SS to take Correas place. Lee could be below average there but we don’t know if he will hit. Lewis is not a MLB SS.

    I would focus on kid engagement which should be fairly easy (reduced kid prices let kids watch batting practice etc). The next thing would be using social media to target everyone under the age of 40. There are a couple of missed generations out there to be recaptured.

    In the long run should MLBtv get a majority of teams under its umbrella there are huge potential gains. The marketing opportunities for MLB stars would be huge. Advertising revenue could be substantial. And best of all (my idea) the small and mid market teams could draw a line in the sand and tell the Yankees Dodgers et al that they either join them or they will have to pay them a royalty to broadcast any game with a lesser team. This could end up being the best form of revenue sharing. If the giants don’t like it they can each play each other 30 times a year and see what happens.

    This is a good point. I can only surmise it’s one of Falveys rigid philosophies that catching isn’t worth high draft capital.

    This would be a move the Twins should make if they are going to rebuild. I assume they are trying to win next year so then this deal makes no sense.

    Paddack and SWR with Festa starting in St Paul. Varland in the pen from the get go. Given payroll restrictions this is the best part of the team to roll it back.

    I’ve been thinking about this too. Not only tired but injured. I get that it seems intuitive that more rest should equal fresher players with fewer injuries but that hasn’t been the case. And it’s not only this year.

    They are not “rebuilding “ but some of the principles are the same. They will be banking on a group of youngish players to come through. I feel comfortable with the rotation. I would trade or sign a lefty reliever that doesn’t have massive splits. I would sign or trade for a righty bat that doesn’t have massive splits, preferably an outfielder. All moves I would make are predicated on two basics: the player has to be an above average fielder without massive splits. I’m done playing the platoon game to the extent we have been.

    I largely agree with your assessment- I have no idea who ends rising to the top. I see a very real possibility that Lee starts in AAA and Julien can’t hit enough so Castro is your second baseman. This is why you bring all back for ST - we are likely going to need options. Who know AK might wake up and be the best option at first.

    I don’t know about MVP but Sim was really important to the Twins. He clearly performed better than one could reasonably expect. Sim starting instead of Barland probably added 3-4 wins.
