  1. I don’t believe for a minute that Cease and Vasquez are involved in the same transaction. Both teams are looking to cut payroll. Why would SD mess around with Vasquez when they can deal Cease for good prospect and use a small part of the savings to sign a McCann?
  2. “Defensive versatility” is a term that makes me nervous. Given his less than stellar fielding in college I’m interpreting that to mean he’s not a good fielder and they have to find a place to stash him. Left field?
  3. This is a good point. With TV revenue changing dramatically I wouldn’t be surprised if the owners play hardball in the next negotiation.
  4. Regarding pricing the relative value is in the eye of the beholder. I’m paying a really high amount to get DirectTv essentially to watch the Twins. So for me $20 month would be a great bargain - can’t wait to cancel it.
  5. I keep seeing mixed reports on his defense so I don’t know what to say there. But yea the bar to clear with the bat is essentially a broomstick……….laying on the ground.
  6. Not having a part time replacement level player hardly qualifies for catastrophic. Having said that relying on any of the AAA catchers is putting the Cartaya before the horse. 😂
  7. I am all for letting him work out of the pen and giving him some high level opportunities. However we have to remember that any really good D1 player is going to do well in A ball. He hasn’t got anybody out in AA or above so the idea that he is going to help the big league club this year is a long shot.
  8. Castro is uniquely valuable to the Twins as they have a history of lots of injuries and there are performance concerns across a number of positions in our lineup. Castro goes a long way towards mitigating these problems. I do understand why some people would want to move him because he will not be around next year. If they are struggling at next year’s deadline I would deal along with several others.
  9. Okay I’m not interested in this kind of bickering so have a nice evening.
  10. Or a more likely event is that you don’t know as much about this as you think.
  11. Well I have a degree in economics so I’m pretty comfortable with my knowledge in this area.
  12. I loved this post just because of the “work like rented mules” comment. My Dad grew up on a farm and my childhood was filled with sayings like this. My favorites were when a Twins batter would strike out with a man on third - “he couldn’t hit a pig in the ass with a spade” (for the non farmers a spade is a shovel) or if a hitter he didn’t like got a hit “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while”. Memories…..
  13. I believe the Twins are already using the hybrid approach. They had guys skip starts and also stayed with a five man rotation early on when they could have skipped the fifth spot. No way on the 6 man rotation. I’m not taking away starts from the top three to hand them to a 6th starter. Plus I highly doubt the starters would go deeper in games so the bullpen has the same load with one fewer pitcher.
  14. You might consider a class on economics.
  15. These are always fun - thanks for writing them. I think it is interesting that a lot of these guys spent extensive time in the minors.
  16. Just when I thought the content couldn’t get wackier……
  17. Yea if you look at Varland objectively there are reasons to be doubtful. He hasn’t been good as a starter and has one short successful stint in the pen when batters had never seen him before.
  18. I had similar thoughts. I don’t think Camargo is a great prospect but he has shown more IMO than Cartaya has yet many posters / writers are ready to kick him to the curb. I think it’s the shiny new toy syndrome that has people excited about Cartaya. And as Doc noted many players don’t hit at AA. Sometimes it’s an aberration but most of the time it means the end of the line which is why I would be skeptical of Cartaya.
  19. He has shown flashes of potential and at 24 years old I hope he gets a run. I like actual performance to determine a players fate not the opinion of a FO type. There are certainly enough question marks in the back end of the bullpen to give the guy a chance.
  20. I thought WAR was considered a bad way to measure bullpens? If the Twins pen was considered 2nd best last year based on WAR then I would disregard it.
  21. This is a good point. IMO we had 4 guys that played good defense and two of them are now gone.
  22. That he has to be used in a set routine. Use him in the most critical times regardless of inning.
  23. The forget St Paul part. He absolutely needs to prove himself.
