  1. The odds are much better he isn't even in the major leagues in two year, let alone an all star. In 2019, the last time he has played, he hit .236 in A+ and AA. There is no Front Office in MLB that would even think of starting him as an opening day SS after a major injury and two years off. With that said I believe he will be better than average MLB player and maybe an all star once or twice. The harder part is what are the Twins going to do in the minors with Javier, Steer, Palacios, Lewis and Martin, that is 5 (4 if you don't include Steer) for two starting SS jobs (AA and AAA). Which means they have to move Martin or Lewis off of SS right away (I think it will be Martin). So Palacios starts at AAA, Lewis AA, Martin AA in left, Steer at 2nd or 3rd, and Javier still in A+ or in AA with Lewis and him splitting some time, hoping Lewis forces his way to AAA. Also, I am only trading Lewis if I get three years of control for a pitcher, or two with all signs pointing to a extension. I don't know if in baseball if you are allowed to talk to a player, for example with the Reds where you say to Castillo we will trade for you if take an extension of ....
  2. If they have to eat that amount of money, they would have paid him between 37 and 42 million for 163 games, that is a savory front office to make a deal like that. The Twins signed him because they thought the window was open. quite a few people believe that window is now closed, so they should trade Donaldson. Doesn't that say quite a bit about the FO? They went to the owner and explained why signing Donaldson was a good idea and why trading away one of their best pitching prospects away and taking on salary was a good idea. Now they go to the owner and say opps, Covid, we need to rebuild and you know that contract for Josh Donaldson we convinced you to sign, yea we are going to have to eat quite a bit of that money and um the player(s) we are getting back are just fill ins for the minor leagues. But no worries we aren't going to spend anymore of your money, until the pitching prospects work out, which should be 2022, probably more like 2023, but for sure by 2024, and if for some reason we are wrong again, we have quite a few players we can trade to reload the minor leagues.
  3. I respect your opinion, but if the Twins started next year with Lewis and Martin in the OF, Celestino as DH, and that cast of characters pitching I would be done with them forever.
  4. If that is the FO thoughts, then the first thing they should do is apologize to the fans and tell them they are lowering the price of all seats, maybe offer even bigger discounts if you bring a child to the games. Because if that is their thoughts and they don't kiss the butts of the fans, it will be quite empty at Target Field next year. And if they don't figure out how to stream their games, well..... If they could convince Rondon to take a syndergaard contract next year, they should do that. I love Castillo, don't like the two years of control, unless they are convinced he will sign an extension. Frankie Montas is the A's pitcher I think they should go after, he has 3 years of control, they say they will take Manaea and his 10.2 off their hands to help get the deal done. (I am good with Bassitt as well, but his contract is 8.8, so they might want to get rid of Manaea more) Then find a SS they feel comfortable throwing out there every day.
  5. I get this thread is about Simmons, and I don't want them to sign him, but if it is him or Palacios, I go with if Simmons even if he doesn't bounce back he is still a 1.5 WAR player, and force the rookies to prove they belong. Maybe not the best plan, but at least it is a plan.
  6. I wasn't asking if Simmons is a bad player, or if the twins should sign him, I asked what the back up plan to Palacios starting the season as opening day. But if the Twins think either Palacios or Gordon can put up a 1.5 WAR next year as the starting short stop, then they should be the starting short stop and they should sign Maggi or somebody like him and put him in AAA as the back up plan.
  7. If Balazovic is the Twins #3 prospect and is seen as a borderline starer/relief pitcher, the Twins are in more trouble than I thought, And he seems like the somebody that probably should be included in a trade to bring somebody back.
  8. For those of you suggesting Jermaine Palacios as the Twins starting SS, what is the back up plan if starts out not good or gets hurt? IMO they have to sign a vet, and it should be the cheapest one (unless it is the best one available) , because if Palacios, Lewis or Martin start out on fire and should be brought up, I don't want them sitting in the minors because of vet SS.
  9. I think a moderator bringing up their stance on vaccines, should open up the conservation the opposite way. (I am in no way making that case) I made the argument on a different thread that starting a rookie SS on opening day is not a good idea, because what is the back up plan if said rookie is terrible? Somebody like Miranda (if we didn't have Donaldson) could be a plan A at 3B because of a year long success at AAA, as long as you have somebody in AAA if you be comfortable bringing up if he isn't good. As for Larnach I also don't feel comfortable with his as Plan A or B. That doesn't mean I want them to sign free agent to a long deal, it just mean sign somebody for a year or two that you are OK with losing his job if Larnach forces his way back to the team.
  10. The last thing I want is Lewis being the Twins opening day short stop. From many reasons, what is the upside? If he starts in AA and is on fire, he could be moved up and the SS they signed for gap can be moved to the bench or traded. If he starts out slow at he majors what is the plan then? play Gordon and what if he sucks? try Martin and all of 89 games at SS in the last 4 years, Sign a guy for triple AAA to come up? Move Polanco, try Miranda? Having Lewis as plan A for the opening day short stop would be one of the dumbest things this FO has done, and they have done a bunch.
  11. So you are only interest in future projections and hope? I don't get it? For the last 3 years he has been better than Berrios and he got how much money?
  12. I can agree with that but if you are getting a 28 year old pitcher with 3 years of control, coming off of three years of 4.9, 1.1, 4.7 WAR you trade any prospect not named Wander Franco, Vlad Jr, Tatis Jr. (or possibly a prospect rocketing up the rankings not dropping in the rankings)
  13. agree, but if I am giving up Lewis or Martin, I want at least 3 years of control. Somebody like Castillo just turns into trade bait at the deadline if the Twins are sellers at the 2022 deadline.
  14. To me that is a great plan b, when somebody gets hurt, you can go to St. Paul and get one of the two without adding some AAAA player to the 40 man. If you go into a season with two starting outfielders and a 3rd that historically misses games. what is the back up plan? bring other rookies or Rooker up that might not be ready, or bring up AAAA players. That is a plan that should get the FO fired immediately. They signed Buxton, have Kepler, you go out and get a cheaper right handed Left Fielder. Somebody that in no way blocks Larnach or Celestino if they are on fire in AAA.
  15. Luis Castillo is UFA in 2024, so it is two years of control. But if it was 3 years, I would do the trade as well.
  16. I much rather have the two prospects and Garcia at 53 (4 years) million, than kepler for 25 (3 years) If I am Miami. Tim - don't get me wrong as a Twins fans I would love to have them trade for those two prospects and I would give up Kepler to get them, I just don't think Kepler or at least him alone is going to get them, that has been the point I have been trying to make, very badly I admit.
  17. I just don't see Miami taking Kepler for these two. I mentioned he will be 24 when he pitches next because he pitched 58 innings in 2018, 54 innings in 2019, 20 innings in 2020, 71.1 in 2021, normally next year would be 100-110, but it will be 0 again. so it will be another 3 years until he gets to 100-110 innings in a season. This is they way teams are bringing along pitchers these days, watching their innings. People get mad when you point it out, but the data is there. So if he is to become a MLB starter it will be closer to when he is 27, if he is going to become a relief pitcher he could be in the majors by 2024.
  18. Hard pass on the Sonny Gray trade, no way I am giving up the years of control and IMO the gem of the minor league prospects for 2 years of Gray, I would be willing to trade Jeffers and a much lower ranked and older pitching prospect for Gray. Would be willing to do the Mahle trade as long as there was decent FA signed as well. Also a hard pass on Luis Castillo, not giving Lewis up for two years of control. Might be willing to do it for Martin who I think might end up better than Lewis but IMO has no real chance of being a major league short stop (since he has only played 45 games at short in the last 4 years)
  19. So you want the Twins to trade Kepler for a relief pitcher and a pitcher that is out next year and will be 24 before he pitches in the minors again?
  20. WAR: -.8, 1.6, 1.0, 4.7, 1.1, 1.3, -..5, .2, 6.7 = 15.4 (30 starting day 2022) WAR: 1.8, 1.3, 1. 4,5. 2, 3.2, 1.5, 3.4 = 18.1 (31 starting day 2022)
  21. Why would Miami trade one of their top prospects, a 23 year old lefty handed pitcher in AA (1.77 ERA in 15 games, with 99 K's in 71.33 innings) and another 23 year old pitcher and top 2 prospect that was a top 81 prospects going into last year for Kepler? That would be a better return than the Berrios trade. If the I was Miami, I would be asking for Lewis, AK, and Balazovic for them, not a 29 year old Max Kepler.
  22. Remember when the Tigers were so bad they picked up the Twins scraps, now? To be honest all those deals minus Scherzer and Verlander were less than I was expecting, and the Twins could have done one or a combo of a few of them. I don't think Stroman is worth 20 million a year, and I am guessing others don't either or he would have signed a 5/100 already. I think he swallows some pride and takes a 1-2 year contract with the Mets.
  23. why sign Pineda for 3 years, his last two contracts have been for 2 years? On top of that he will be 33 in a month or so, and never has had a season with a WAR higher than 2.7. Also I can't imagine Stroman would take 3 years, when Ray(5), Gausman(5), Rodriguez (5), Gray (4), Matz (4), 37 year old Scherzer got 3, and soon to be 39 year old Verlander got 2. I would love to get Stroman for 3, but is is realistic? and I would give Pineda 2, not three, because the prospects should be than him in by the time the contract is done.
  24. They better hope it isn't 24 before they are good again. No fans 20, 16K a game in 21, and if they are terrible again and running bullpen games out there nightly, it will be even lower in 22, by 23 they will have to be giving away tickets. And if they can't figure out a way to get their games on streaming, well.....
  25. So locking up a good pitcher for 4 years at a reasonable price (barely more than they paid for Pineda the last few years) is a bad idea because they don't have a SS right now? By the time the savior is up he would still have two years left on the contract and either be a back end starting pitcher (because the pitching prospects will be up) or a wipe out relief pitcher, still relatively cheap.
