    Dave St. Peter held extremely influential positions, for significant periods of time, and was a trusted confidant of the ownership. The idea he can be totally disconnected from the baseball ops is silly to me. This man was likely in every major conversation about budgets, hires, allocations, etc. But this is a pointless conversation, you seem to assert (largely without evidence) that you have significant insight into the operations of the organization. I do not. What I do know is this man held titles about as high as humanly possible within this organization over a time period where we have seen the organization flounder. I am not so quick to absolve him. I will not continue this conversation with you, it's pointless.

    You really make it quite impossible for any conversation about the front office or ownership to happen. "Dave St. Peter was pretty irrelevant" is....something.

    This is good information and not surprising. A lack of scouts is going to show up in a multitude of ways beyond just the draft. This team rarely seems to mine out gold out of their trades. So many key members of the Rays were scouted out as low level trade acquisitions early in their careers. So many of these team's players were internationally scouted. Teams like the Twins need to win at the margins. This is a relatively low-cost, margin play. And they have purposely gone cheap on it. Inexcusable.

    I see him popping up in Ginkel's spot more and more, they're easing him in. I get the angst about not playing him, but drafting and developing Ginkel's replacement is pretty damn important.

    Schefter reporting that Irsay doesn't want to move Taylor. If that's the case I shift my attention to Cousins. Part of the difficulty in all of this is figuring out the behind-the-scenes QB drama that involved KOC, McCarthy, Kyler, etc.

    I think McCaffrey is a slightly better player but I think you'd see more from him (like in San Fran) with a better infrastructure around him. The poor guy basically sees a stacked box at levels only Derrick Henry can match.

    I understand that perspective, I think Taylor can be a difference maker. It's basically the cost of what San Fran paid for McCaffery.

    I think I just really, really want Taylor. Trade a 2nd next year and a 3rd the following year. Or vice versa. He's locked up through his age 30ish season. He's an absolute stud. Go get him.

    My eye test doesn't hate this OL and their blocking. I think they showed with Mason yesterday that they can pave the way. Taylor's vision and ability to squeeze out so much out of every carry would be a huge difference maker IMO.

    The Rays being as good as they are with only three drafted and developed players shows how important it is to remember that acquiring young talent can happen in a multitude of ways. The Rays churn the trade market and aren't afraid to move players when the timing calls for it. I appreciate this article though, one of the best on TD in quite some time. Looking forward to the next one!

    I really hope the Twins work with him on how he can make harder contact at a better rate. Given his pedigree, cost, and low value this is not a guy I'd want to get rid of at this point. This should be the kind of guy that the team invests resources in to improve.

    Yup, I'm much more interested in what something like our 3rd round pick could fetch. I'm not interested in giving up a 1st unless we're talking about some kind of outrageously good acquisition that I can't even conceive of right now. I'm not even sure that player exists. Bijan Robinson maybe? Other than that I don't see a single seller with a piece i'd dangle that pick for.

    The spacing seems so much better. Beringer isn't embarrasing himself either against a tough front court. That's super encouraging.

    The entire second paragraph shows you're conflating two things. Trading or not trading Joe Ryan is not related to this discussion. I mean, it could be if you'd like to offer up to all of us some inside information about how that went down but I'm guessing you don't possess that. You're making assumptions about "The Process" which is a much more macro conversation than one about the size and investment related directly to analytics. We have demonstrable, known information about those investments. I don't have similar information about the many layers of "the process" such that I can make the kind of sweeping claims you are. Do I know many things are going wrong for this team? Yes. Can I pinpoint the who/when/where/what? No. I can, however, pinpoint that our commitment to analytics as measured by manpower and money does not seem to match similarly situated markets who are performing at much higher levels. That is enough for me to say that we should at least be considering changes in that direction. Your macro conversation is warranted (though nearly impossible without much more work done by those covering the team) but this blog post was a subset of that that deserves its own conversation without being dragged into a murky, macro one.
