That's one possibility although very unlikely as extreme as you've described. I'm suspicious something like that happened though. After Lewis comments about just letting it fly and apparent responses to the players only meetings makes me wonder how much credit Popkins should get. Its one of those things we will never really know and won't get good info until after the season but if Popkins were moved to another role or something similar we would have a hint. Popkins may have gotten some coaching himself as well. He could easily have made adjustments in his style or delivery or gameplaning that helped everyone. He wouldn't be the first 33 yo in a big time role that had to adjust.

Which still wasn't all that great if that was the upside. Not really playing infield anymore hurts his value immensely as does not being right handed. I struggle to see a spot for him on this or next years roster if he's not playing at least as many positions as Castro. I was really looking forward to seeing what he could do finally being healthy and up to fighting weight, literally above 165lbs, but it doesn't look like it comes together in Minnesota.

Game Thread: Mets (Peterson) v Twins (Maeda), 9/9 @ 1:10pm CT
Jocko87 replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
Just noticed that last night Correa hit the 550 PA vesting option for the 2030 $20m option, in case you were curious what kind of pace that was. Played in 127 of 141 games so far, 25 more PA for the 2029 option. -

Was wondering the same. This is the point of the season where lineups get wonky and rest becomes more important so not too bothered. Probably a good low risk opportunity to get Wallner more looks at a lefty too. Speaking of low risk lefties, this is a good guy to tee off on. The quality of at bat was excellent last night and I'd like to see that again with this lineup. -
Don't forget he was terrible before he got hurt too. I said at the time his injury was a blessing in disguise as they would have had to make a really uncomfortable move if not. Also, not mentioned in the article is a move with Gallo, who would be ahead of Gordon on my personal rankings of returning injured players. That should tell you everything you need to know about bringing him back.

Very impressed with the quality of at bat tonight. Every time I looked up it was a full count. -

I'm not talking about what I would do or factor. I'm not saying it's remotely likely. I am am saying that this isn't a baseball decision, which should be obvious at this point. In the world of Boras crazy things can happen. Maybe it's not the QO that is the factor, maybe it's the Boras relationship. Same difference to me. In truth, I mentioned it so my actual point could be obfuscated. He stays on the roster to fill time so others don't have to. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else, maybe even Correa, takes an il stint when Kirrilloff comes back.

Lol, that's why I put it last! It's way down the list for sure but this far in might as well hold tight. The route to the post season roster has to include getting very very hot over the last month. If not it will be Stevenson who can be a pinch running weapon Ala Terrance Gore or whoever the royals used. He's just a better runner and defender for the bench spot.

There is a reason to keep him and it’s pretty straightforward. He’s healthy and can chew up a lot of innings down the stretch so more key figures can get rest. That’s it. The rest of the regular season is about getting healthier and lining up the postseason roster and they need filler players to do that. I’m open to the argument that they should get a Martin or something else up to do that but this far down the line it’s not worth the ire of Boras and the clubhouse to cut a struggling .750 OPS player. 100 OPS+ is league average no matter how he got there. I know it’s not what we would like or do as fantasy GMs but the reality is highly likely he is with us all year. He probably won’t make the postseason roster but that doesn’t mean he’s not a helper down the stretch. There’s also the qualifying offer still hanging out there. I’m fully aware it’s drawing to an inside straight flush but if he gets hot in garbage time he could very easily go into the offseason as a 28-30 homer, .775 OPS guy in a season where he struggled mightily. There is value there. I don’t see it happening but I promise it’s a factor.

What Does a Lost Year Mean for José Miranda?
Jocko87 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He needs to get his outfield glove ready and get back to hitting. Play deep, run to the wall and throw it back in. Good enough if he gets the bat going. If he can hit and function in the outfield he will have a role with this squad for as long as he wants. If he can't hit anymore it doesn't matter. -
Would have loved to get a sweep but all hail meatloaf. Enough was done. The buried headlines are the story today. Varland a smooth 99 out of the bullpen is a big deal. As he get comfy he can have more leverage and take load off the back of the pen in less crucial games down the stretch. Also good news on Stewart and Paddack starting rehab, as far as I know. Julien is a natural born first baseman. It's is proclaimed. Seriously though, Julien at first unlocks so many lineup possibilities and really renders Gallo redundant. For real this time. Or maybe when Kirrilloff comes back. Maybe.

Game Thread 9-6-23 @ 12:10pm CT: Twins @ Guardians
Jocko87 replied to IndianaTwin's topic in Archived Game Threads
At my younger brothers high school graduation reception my godparents, who were the elementary principal and high school English teacher, were discussing the relative class sizes year to year. My brother had 42 classmates after several years of 20-30 students. (Rural North Dakota) They chatted for a bit how odd it was then kinda ended with a shrug, "interesting, I wonder why that is." Old Norwegian bachelor farmer in the corner looks up from his coffee and says the only thing he probably said all day, "Winter of 83" and went back to his coffee. The look on their faces as they pondered, then realized what he had said was absolutely priceless. I will never forget it. I've since come to also understand how my and 12 other classmates October birthdays came to be. -

Certainly I'm not the only one that didn't notice that the first 3 times I scanned the lineup. Big News, If True. -
Reading through the methodology of this stat it's a little bit of a misnomer to call it a baserunning stat. It very heavily weighs stolen bases and GIDP, both areas Correa is going to be poor in on a good year. It's a bit of a reach to call GIDP a base running stat vs a hitting stat. I don't see Correa or Solano make the mistakes a Lewis does for example but this stat seems to factor speed over everything.

It's Time to Move Carlos Correa Down in the Lineup
Jocko87 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No, hes going to get a 10+ day break after the Cleveland series (provided they take 2 of 3). Moving in the order doesn't change anything. The GIDP opportunities will still find him. By the way, average exit velo on the double plays this year is 94.2mph. I haven't been tracking xBa in detail but its north of .300 from a spot check. 9 events higher than .400 and 4 higher than .500. Getting a break to refresh and heal a bit will do far more good than moving the batting order.- 22 replies

His scorecard matched my live reaction and my feeling that everything went their way. None of the missed calls were all that close. Certainly not suggesting a bias, but Seager will get more calls than Julien at this point in their careers. Pagan got jobbed a bit but has to keep his composure there. Still did well to only allow that one run. I was questioning the bullpen use a bit but I'm fine with it. When a reliever is dominate, as most of the pen was, its the balance of eating the innings by blowing two guys out or keeping them available by taking a 6-7 pitch inning and getting ready for today. With the extra roster slot it'll be fine. Ideally the Floro/Funderburk/Sands/Headrick connection will handle it today.

Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month - August 2023
Jocko87 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The comp is Kyle Tucker. High school center fielder picked 5th overall that could have stayed there but won a gold glove in right. Best high school bat in the that draft, got to the majors in 2.5 years and hit everywhere. Similar body type and prospect profile. Nice to have several choices for this award. Hitters comin.- 29 replies
