Christian Javier would be the reason not to sign an extension to pitchers. After signing his ERA went up to 4.58. The next year is TJ. Now this year will be the rehab and regain year.

When Pohlad bought the Twins there was an article about depreciating the players. You could depreciate the contracts you have when you purchase, but not the new ones. For a new owner there is more money to be made by keeping the player than having a bare cupboard for the new player

Grichuk had a late career resurgences after years of so so performance. Expect regression. He is probably wanting to be paid like a 2 war player in their prime. I don’t think anyone will give him that contract. A 4 million contract would be a reasonable expectation.

I don’t think they trust Varland. They like Jeffers bat but would appear to doubt that he could be a full time catcher. If there is an exodus of talent through trades off the roster of controlable players that will be the answer. To the question

So the trade Vazquez bandwagon rolls on. Caratini is signed for 2 years with Houston. Houston signed him because they needed a catcher. They do have an emergency catcher but if they really liked him as a catcher they would not have signed Caratini. Grandal was mentioned. Last season he was a part time player, the 2 years before that he did not hit well nor was that great behind the plate. McCann has hit better than Vazquez but has not been a half time catcher in a long time. Without an adequate replacement there wouldn’t be a trading of Vazquez unless there is a blockbuster of a deal. The top catching prospects haven’t played a half season at AAA, So they might not be ready for major league quite yet. Rushing is blocked as a catcher in LA. You have to give something to get something. Keashall is a similarly ranked prospect. If the team is not going to sign Castro to an extension his value might not get any higher by waiting. Thet might could find a team that undervalues a pitcher that the Twins like.

When Margot joined the team he was about a career .200 as a pinch hitter. His hitting other than the pinch hit attempts was at about career average. The Twins asked him to do what he does not do well. When they traded for him they should have known it would be a failure. Doncon had better pan out.

You can always find 2-3 arms for a bullpen. It seems like they used about 37 different ones there last year

Depends on what statistic one uses. One of the best by WAR or FIP.. Not so muck by ERA, a bad bullpen by LOB %

The Wood and Stripling contracts last year totaled 22.5 million. The Severino contract is being reported as 2 years plus an option. Exact numbers are not known. At 67 million divided evenly over 3 years is 22.3 million. They are not paying him 67 for one year.

The players picked rarely fall in order of best to worst. Every team has their own philosophy of pitching. The odds of the Twins finding a pitcher that first their profile is probably there. The chance that they are major league ready is what is low. The lists that I have seen are mostly AA and lower players. Just like with Ryan, they will take development time at the major league level. Teams make bad guesses all of the time.

Paddack could be an inexpensive starter. The contract for the Twins, based on what they pay relievers, makes him a starter. He hasn’t has nearly a full season since 2020. There will be teams that would take the flier. That would leave the Twins with SWR and Festa as the 4/5 starters and hoping the kids come through when there are injuries. Not the worst scenario, not the best either. If the Twins’ talent evaluators are skeptical of the minor league players abilities they could package one of them with Paddack to get a prospect they like better. That would entail finding a prospect that another team is skeptical about. The Twins found one in Ryan, so it does happen. Due to salaries I doubt they could make a Pablo Lopez kind of trade. The Vasquez conundrum is that they do not have a catcher in the system they like. To find someone who would take a defensive catcher as a backup might not be that hard. Finding a replacement that is less expensive would be. That is why Vasquez is tradable

With a roster full of pre arbitration players they have to spend money to get revenue sharing. Last year they signed Wood and Stripling. This year they had to spend a little more.

All you have to do is go to baseball reference and look up Twins drafts or go to the twins roster page and click on the player and that information is there

The chance that Canha has a Carlos Santana kind of season is almost nil. So there is no way he can be the next Santana. He has a chance to be the next Margot, but I would hope not. At best he would be a league average player. Some days he would be an asset, more days non contributory. It is a move that is not going to put the team on top.
