  1. Maybe the real issue is that they are self medicating every year, hence the warped view.
  2. Texas has 19 games with Oakland, San Diego, Seattle, and Detroit plus 10 with the Orioles and Angels. If the Rangers realy are a decent team they may even surge ahead of Houston. The Twins would need a repeat of May and go like 28-10 to have any chance.
  3. Teams see things in pitchers that make the team thinks that pitcher can get outs in the majors. They will get chances. Duffrey is on pace to throw more innings than he ever has in pro ball would lead me to believe he could be around as a bullpen arm for September.
  4. A 30 something year old player released and not signed after clearing usually means your career is over. I do not think any player wants to end their career.
  5. If bullpen arms are such a fungable asset why are there so many teams with such poor bullpens?
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1808&position=1B/3B A comp could be Mike Hessmann. 20-30HR in the minors,
  7. A while back Jesse over at Twinkie Town said something about him breaking into the top 50 if he continued as he has been doing. If there is turnover on the Twins roster that allows more prospect to be in the majors and thus no longer be prospects, then he should move up the lists.
  8. For some strange reason I pulled up the Twins roster on Fangraphs. If in your top 10 for ofensive WAR includes a minor league utility player and 2 pitchers, that is not good no matter how flawed the statistic is for being at the 1/3 point of a season
  9. I think a quite a few people before your article posted similar. It should be obvious that I do not make my living from sports. I can enjoy it for what it is, no appears was, a heck of a nice run. A team without a steady big bopper and a couple of little ones are doomed to have streaks. I would think all the stat heads know that. If a downturn continues, the kids in Chatanooga could be up sooner (glass half full) I really hope that the Twins do well,. This week, like the start of the season, is making it mighty tempting to finish off that glass.
  10. A bad couple of days. Maybe Joe can be a relief pitcher and Hicks be the backup catcher and be Mauer's personal catcher.
  11. Cranko won't see it, he ignores you. (kidding)
  12. Todays 2.1 IP did not help with 5 hits, a walk, 2 runs and a lucky break that Reyes was trying to get an ill advised double.
  13. Not comparing the two, but Greg Maddux through his prime almost always had an ERA lower than his xfip. Just as rare as a year Carl Pavano was healthy, there are pitchers who induce weak contact. Enjoy Pelf's health while it lasts.
  14. Toronto is becoming Twins Territory. Collabello, Tolleson, Valencia, Hendricks, Albers and stretching it Dickey. Another former Twin farmhand, Bobby Korecky pops up every now and then, too.
  15. RBI does measure how well someone hits with men on base, Sort of like timing someones speed by counting 10001,1002, 1003. Dang, that guy is fast getting to first base.
  16. The spell is broken when you talk about your magical skills for improving Twins players. BTW were you a failure with Nolasco?
  17. Bryce Harper was on the dl for 2 months. His first 2 weeks back he had an OPS of .499 Worse than the career OPS of Drew Butera. A little rusty is what you would call Bryce.
  18. The Pohlads are into making money. Historically in this town, contention keeps people tuned in, it kind of takes some form of a title to get the fans coming.. Gosh, I am suddenly rich beyond reason. Thanls, Mike. The question becomes is my player development continually advancing. Is the development leading to product on the field people can watch. Why the setbacks. Gunathor pointed out how long down cycles can be What was failed to mention was how short the up cycle was for some of these teams. My concern is not as much getting to the up cycle as figuring out how to also stay there, If it is you have X years to get a team in the playoffs or else, more than likely the GM will go into win now mode and you will sww a couple year wingow of being good and then the team falls apart. Everybody gets fired, New people know they only have X years and the cycle continues. At the same time you do not want to fallinto the Cleveland trap. Cleveland won under Hart. Yearly. Shapiro has beeb there for about 15 years. wins enough every few years.
  19. I do not think there is any other business that is reliant on finding and identifing the most elite of a field as baseball is. Past the first few draft picks, what are the chances of finding a star player? How many high bonus 16 year ols players become Michael Ynoa?, Timeline for a ballplayer Trout a star young, Mcutheon at 24, Donaldson and Bautista late 20s. . The development of baseball skills is such a variable to get the star players necessary for a team to be winning.
  20. With the way Nolasco has pitched this year (and last) I am sceptical of a trip to the dl and 2 rehab starts making him the pitcher he was before he signed with the Twins. He had a whole offseason to heal from last year. I do not think he did.I doubt he will make it back as an effective pitcher.
  21. Garcia and Rodrigues are young. Baez is a converted 3b and is 27. The rest all appear to be older players culled fron other organizations. . Maybe Tonkin and Pressly get it figured out this year. Maybe Burdi, Reed and Salcedo get it figured out for next year. Unfortunately in spring training these guys didn't show enough for the Twins to jettison a few pitchers.
  22. Unless Jorge Polanco can do a Mookie Betts in the outfield I don't know if there is really anyone in the minors to make you go "Great !!!!!" when they are called up that is performing well in AAA or AA. They wll have to figurhappened to Shaffer's bat from last year. I do not know if Tonkin is Slama part 2. He is doing well but is it by deception or talent? At this point in their careers one of Achter or Oliveros should be up rather than Stauffer. Stauffer is purely mop up at this point DFA and see what you have in these guys.
  23. Jimmer. the comment I responded to was I'd guess arguements based on math and science tend to draw less ire from many of us "negative nellies", not that faith in your club should draw such harsh rebuke. My response was attempting to point out there has been pleny of debate on these boards, sometimes not nice, about defensice metric validity and what BABIP really measures. Does debate about science and math draw out less ire? No. Look at your post.
  24. Early season baseball. Sometimes the team ends the year not as good as they played at the begining. Sometimes a team gets better throuh the year. Had the team have the record of KC a few days ago people would have said smoke and mirrors. As with manythings, some things need a little time to settle out.
  25. Defensive metrics They have math.. I guess there is a science There is a debate on validity People used to say BABIP was matter of the pitcher's luck. Over the winter it became a measure of how good the defense is Math and science in baseball
