  1. Stauffer and Pressly are about the same pitcher in terms of fastball speed. Pressly does not offer any more upside than back of the pen. In his first 105 innings of major league pitching he had an ERA of 4 and FIP being somewhere near that. Stauffer the previous season had an ERA of 3.5 and a FIP of 3.02 Somewhere in the flight from the west coast he lost the ability to pitch, but off the numbers from the previous seasons, Stauffer had better numbers. If the thoughtwas that Stauffer was going to be anything more than 6th inning or mop up pitcher because they saw something they thought they could improve, they guessed wrong. That or the intercostal injury happened in spring training and he tried to pitch through it. Stauffer did not block a prospect with upside. Tonkin keeps getting chances. It has not worked out.
  2. My memory is fuzzy as hell. Which young pitcher showed they really belonged last year after being called up? Stauffer had 2 years prior of above average pitching in the bullpen before joining the Twins, Since his release Stauffer continues to be able to sign contracts. If he returns to being a slightly better than league average reliever in Arizona does it mean that the Twins have lousy coaches or Stauffer had a bad year?
  3. Radke only pitched 13 years, unlike the other s on your list. Single metrics do not seem to be the best way to establish mediocrity or greatness. Now, if you can find the formula for whip-wins so we could all find out over time who was the most effective pitcher, you might settle the argument
  4. Think Miquel Cabrerra type numbers
  5. Pettit and Rodney were the only relievers not to sign multi year deals. Villanueva did, but he is, and reportedly wants to be, a spot starter, Unless you gave a player essentially 2 years pay for one, they are not going to sign for one year if they are good. Prove it players and players wanting to stay on the same team sign for one. Clippard is still available. Made 8 million last year.Ego would say he does not want to go backwards too far on a contract. His problem is he didn't have a 8 million sort of year. Great candidate fora one year contract, but he would probably hold out until just before camp starts to settle for a one year contract. Even then he would try to find a team he could close for. The Twins rank low on that unless there is a great sales job about Perkin's health late in a season and GM's remember late season pitching.
  6. By public data in different articles the Twins television contract at 29 million per year is better than Oakland, Miami, and Pittsburgh. Less than but near the Brewers and Cleveland. In terms od television money they are small market. When they are winning and Target Field is party central, they are mid market in terms of stadium revenue.
  7. Morneau's contract was not considered big at the time? Cuddyer's 3/24 was a better contract than almost all of the free agent OF or 1B contracts that year. Cuddyer was not Texiera or Many Ramirez. He could be close to Ibanez and Bradley (who imploded with the contract) and thus got close to their money.
  8. For those who are expected to be rbi producers yes it would be an ok measurement. Other players are effective without driving in runs, examples would be like Dee Gordon or Blackmon. Your typical top of the lineup batters Relief pitcher effectiveness would not be effected by wins. Rather than wins in win+whip perhaps an inverse of blown saves and losses would be more appropriate way to measure.
  9. Was the list of available free agents a way to say Abad isn't bad in comparison to what is left. There must be confidence in the numbers from AAA or AA that would parlay to major league success
  10. With all of the moves of the other teams, if the Twins are out of contention maybe they will have a "Strong" night in September so the extended family will show up as well as the former members of the Stillwater baseball team. They can make a profit off the September call up. The next night they could have "Hamburger" night by adding Mark to the 40 man and dfa Strong.
  11. Your description looks like the metric is a measure of gullibility. Sort of like opsbi
  12. Veteran hitters who can hit but not play the field so much are called DH. When their skills wane they are called retired due to expense. You are not going to pay Josh Willingham 7 million to be a pinch hitter, I doubt he would play for the veteran minimum. It would allow you to not cut the player that is out of options, but that should be a rare occurrence. Danny Valencia would be more secure. Drew Butera would be more secure. Austin Jackson could have a job. You are adding very fringe players, or holding onto a sunk cost rather than making yet another bad deal. I could see teams keeping 9 relievers on staff as there are relievers out there in the 24-28 year old range with nothing left to prove in the minors and proved nothing in the majors in their option years as you hope they finally figure it out.
  13. Before the mandatory 25 man roster was negotiated in the CBA it was optional how many players were paid on the active roster. When clubs were at 24 they all could have been at 25, no one was
  14. Ztmmerman, Upton, Iglesias,McCann and J D Martinez are what is young and good about the team. Age and injuries determine the rest of the team. Holy crapshoot Batman.
  15. Well, Schaffer can hit better than the average pitcher, but not by much
  16. Check league average for pitcher batting average. You are correct, the last few years the pitchers average about .135. In the 60's it was about .145
  17. Any trade with the Brewers would have to include Zach Jones so they can send him to the minors.
  18. The interesting twist would be if the time not on the 25 man roster did not count towards service time. Then the owners might go for it. Your player would get more than enough days off to get the extra year for the team.
  19. The 3 players rested on any given day would be the three starting pitchers with little chance of pitching. The players would more than want this as it is 3 more jobs. I doubt the owners would go for this unless there was something else not accepted like the upcoming service time fight.
  20. Pelfrey had an OPS+ of 246 Then were the Twins need the most improvement is not the utility player but the regular players
  21. UZR 150 at short has him as a decent shortstop, as does every other metric for last year. Any other position suffers from small sample size problems.
  22. Radcliff has 13 names. Perkins, May, and Fien are the only one certain to be here longer than this year, Jepson will be a free agent after this year. There are those who think May should be in the rotation. Injuries do happen. That means you are counting on a 50% success rate from your minor league players. You are counting on 2 of them being the back end of your bullpen, and 4 of them if you really are going to be a contender. That is a lot of faith in your relievers in the minors.
  23. As a Twin Nunez has a fWAR of 1.2. Does that mean the Twins are making optimal use of a role player. The Royals managed to win the World Series with 5 position players with a WAR for the season less than Nunez. They did not jettison their arb eligible role players. Role player is used rather than mediocre as that is how they are used. Rios did not have the option picked up, Infante they ae stuck with for a year.
  24. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-team-projections-and-you-american-league/ It does link to the nl
  25. The fangraphs team projections for 2015 and what happened were far different than what happened. The 81-81 prediction for the Royals and 76-86 for the Astros show how far off they can be
