  1. I want a GM who can do similar things to turning RA Dickey into D'Anaud and Symdergaard. I want a GM who knows when to move a player on while there is still value. I want a GM who is lucky. People from successful organizations moving on Friedman ran the Rays and did a good job. The Dodgers not so much. Luhnow's team had a good year last year, this year so far, not so much. Dombrowski has reinvented multiple team. LaRussa was considered a great baseball mind Dombrowski has been good wherever Hiring away from another organization is not foolproof.
  2. Please refrain from attributing your opinions to me. Roster construction. Most of the time it takes a collective 15 WAR from 4 positions players to have a near playoff team. By history, Mauer, Dozier, Plouffe could provide the bulk of it. Rosario was over 2, Sano was a 2 for a half season. Buxton has a world of potential. Stellar defense and a .700 OPS will get you a 5 WAR CF . At the start of the season that is 6 players that you can find your 4 players. At this point 2 of 6 are in the minors, that leaves the other 4. Sano hasn't appeared to have that hot streak, but still is not the problem. Mauer is not what he was. He still is over 100 WRC, below what a major contributor should be. Plouffe and Dozier have been sinkholes. At the start of the year, all Escobar and Suzuki had to be was career average. I do not know of any team were 6/8 position players declined in the same year. It is not the added pieces that are the problem. Edit. See Nick Nelson's latest posting.
  3. Rather than a 10 win team with the moves offered it may or may not result in a 15 win team. With a 15 win team the names bandied about would be different, but the same thread would exist about how there should have been different players added. It is easy to say exactly what went wrong after it happened. No matter if it is sports, news or anything else people take great joy in informing others what went wrong. Human nature.
  4. What is different from last year to this. Santana is in CF. He has been there before. That leaves Sano to right field. K% the same. BB% down slightly. FB% up, FB/HR down. Over 80 games last year he had 18 HR, 42 games this year 7. I would not say Sano has suffered much in the batting department. His runs scored and RBI are way down. That would be a function of the team around him. So, who is in a role not suited for them and thus underperforming?
  5. There is a difference between describing what you learn from a situation and talking realistically about it and discussing somthing somebodyelse should have done based on the uncertain outcome of athletic performance. This team has what, Abad, Nunez and Park exceeding expectations or career average. Centeno tbd. Nolasco is doing about career average. That would be the 4 players that in general people thought should be gone or not have been signed. Easy to say who should have been signed, who should have been in the minors. after the fact. Easier still to forget the busts that were advocated for.
  6. Morst of my issue is that most of these posts would still leave a team that would generating the same comments of a hindsight of why the team is bad.
  7. Arroyo was owed a good chunk of money while injured. The Dbacks got an OK bench type player back but essentially it was her is Toussant and to get him for little of nothing you have to take on Bronson Arroyos remaining contract, about 10 million. Think like trading Nolasco and Stewart for a reserve player. The Braves have made trades to the competitive balance picks and really paid by taking on the contract for Olivera to get Miami's competitive balance pick from the Dodgers.
  8. The starting over notion, since hindsight is so 20-20, is something that really shouldn't be taken seriously. With that thought, here goes. Let us blame Bill Smith. 2008 draft He drafted Hicks. He could have drafted Gerrit Cole instead. Smith would have given him more than enough money to sign. The following year he would have needed a toolsy outfielder and he would have drafted Trout. Could have had Wade Miley rather than Shooter Hunt, too. Now, you have an ace pitcher, lefty starter, star player to build around rather than nothing. Second round, Brian Shaw as the setup guy. Possibly no trading of Ramos for Capps. No trading Hardy for Hoey. Third round, Brandon Crawford at SS so maybe if you needed trade bait for a real pitcher, And at some point they could have drafted Grossman so he wouldn't have been signed now as a savior. If you try real hard, everything becomes Bill Smith's fault. I used only the fallout from one bad draft with Smith as the boss. Now if only with Santana he ..........
  9. That is not how WAR works since you are using fwar here from the site for you Perhaps one of the most controversial aspects of sabermetrics is the way in which WAR is used. Given the nature of the calculation and potential measurement errors, WAR should be used as a guide for separating groups of players and not as a precise estimate. You might as well argue that given his one game performance extrapolated out over the season Grossman should have been signed sooner. Should have tagged Dave on this too but interchanging minimally different position players is not going to change the outcome significantly for the season. Davis was going to go somewhere where he could play regularly. The outcry last winter if the Twins had signed Davis to play centerfield would have been loud. At this point Buxton and Sano are the 2 most likely position players to carry a team
  10. Rajal Davis is replacement level. You must be thinking the team would get the 2009 version. That was a long time ago. Aaaron Hicks is still playing below replacement level. As many players do, he recently had a good week that gives the players something to hope for. Tyler Duffey. You want to stick the best starter in the bullpen
  11. Pablo Sandoval by WAR has been worse over the designated time period
  12. Nunez would bring back a low level high upside prospect. Nothing to get excited about. That was the kind of trade Ryan excelled at. Plouffe would net the same kind of prospect. Hopefully there will be a team contending with a need.
  13. Hoyer had one good team in Arizona his second year there, not with players he acquired. Hoyer's time in San Diego was marked by low risk, high reward free agent signing. Sounds kind of familiar to the current pattern here. He managed to get a lot of prospects. Not sure how they turned out, though he briefly had Kluber and Rizzo. He was smart enough to get Rizzo for the Cubs. Does the blame for San Diego not progress fall to his assistant Byrnes who was promoted after he left and continued the same practice? Does Hoyer lack something that having Epstien oversee him makes up for? I really can't say that Hoyer would be a good hire.
  14. The anti-gestalt would be this team. Why is probably the unanswered question.
  15. The only indictment of the Twins handling of Meyer is that he was not given a chance to fail sooner. If he had the chance to fail in 2014 and did, then there are the rushed him to soon comments. Easy criticism as there is no way to defend a move, no real way to say it was wrong as a move other than opinion.
  16. As unfair as a calling everyone is thinking the same way
  17. Best players available is fairly subjective when looking at 16 year olds. In general wouldn't you be looking for up the middle of the field players ( C- P-SS-CF) first and move out from there when assessing 16 year old players. When the player from outside that range is taken it should be for an exceptional set of skills with a bat.
  18. The 19 year old at AAA has a few adjustments to make. 18-19 year olds in class A ball is not unusual. I suppose in the day and age of social media and 24/7 news rehash it should be common knowledge who any given team is going after. Thus the lack of information tying the team to any player gets people worried. They have been signing players so there is no reason to suspect they won't. It just might not be a name player. IIRC, the no name players can reach the majors about as often as the name players.
  19. This should clear up why all around this is a bad ideas for investing, and being invested in http://www.thestreet.com/story/12076758/1/salmon-bad-investment-of-the-day-fantex-edition.html
  20. Crain had only 3 blown saves that year. Now Capps had 9 BS and wins for the Pirates that year. If they were the same games I do not know.
  21. Wow. The parameter changes again for what to accept in trade. The problem of what team would want Plouffe for his 2 years before free agency. Is Jim Hoey's clone available The better team argument. If the Twins essentially gave away Arcia so Kepler could play you would be fine with that as it could give the Twins a better team.
  22. The parameter changed from shutdown to merely good reliever. A poor team with a lights out middle reliever wants prospects. A good team short of an even league average 3b are hard to find. At best Plouffe would be a mild upgrade. There would be a good case to be made for the Yankees. You are not going to get Betances for Plouffe, even if you throw in Fien, You might get Shevre or Nova. I doubt they even fit the good 7th inning parameter. That is what makes your original scenario a myth.
  23. Gonsalves has a fb that is reported in a couple sources to be in the low 90's with a peak of 95. Milone sits in the mid 80's with a peak of still under 90. To compare the two is compare apples to eggs.
  24. I am sure most of Twins Daily would be happy to trade Plouffe for an 8th inning stud. There is just no reality in that happening.
  25. Seattle DFA'd him, the Twins did the same. After 4 years of people complaining od Drew Butera could you explain why people are upset the Twins let someone go who would make a team miss Drew Butera
