  1. The likelihood of Nolasco getting cut and thus a sunk cost is small. Cutting Nolasco for a cheaper player would cost more than the other player's salary. Spring training is a ways away. Given the number of quality unsigned free agents out there, the demand for trades is not there. The mediocre free agent is cheaper than Nolasco. When that dries up, teams may start sniffing at Nolasco
  2. A Sano-cam and a web page so these people can watch?
  3. The Twins are a competitive team as they stand. Unless injury and severe regression hit no one would mistake them for Cincinnati, the Philies or the Fresno Grizzlies. Unless there is some serious progression, ALCS tickets are something another team is going to print. They have a lot of above average players. Unless Sano or Buxton steps up, they have no studs. The progression of the non arbitration eligible players this year will be the key for the success. One or two holes are easier to fill at the trade deadline than the team of question marks.
  4. All Revere had to do was get to first with the number of big hitters behind him in Toronto. I don't think that will play as well in Washington.
  5. IIRC Burton was effective for a couple of years. Burrows was used as bench player and was gone by May. His spring training numbers S Burroughs .333 17 42 2 doubles, one single would have given you some hope. Kubel had a good first month before father time discovered he was playing baseball again, Abad for his career has been better in low leverage situations. I can't prove the Twins know this, but if I can find the statistics, I would think it would be reasonable to think the Twins know this.
  6. The only similar recent history with a pitcher on a minor league contract with a ST invite was Guerrier. He did not get to the 25 man roster until May. I think he replaced Pelfrey on the roster.
  7. It is just baseball dreaming on a winter day. As John Phillips wrote all those years ago, "I'd be safe and warm if Nolasco were in LA. Baseball dreaming on such a winter day". Something like that.
  8. One could argue that Desmond could be the better player if he hit like it he did in 2012. The aging curve for middle infielders would lead one to believe that is not going to happen. Over the last 2 years I don't think you can find any overwhelming evidence that Desmond is a better defensive shortstop than Escobar.
  9. Quality starting pitching is something you turn over every rock to find. Serviceable back of the rotation guys can be found in rule 5 draft. That Scott Diamond was the "ace" of the staff was a reflection of the rest of the pitchers. Santana is still the only mid rotation or better starting pitcher picked up in the rule 5 draft the last 20 years. Lots of decent relievers and even a couple of closers in that time period. Starting pitchers, not so much. So when do you trade a guy that is performing as a middle of the rotation pitcher when he was projected to be much less? The trade history of Matt Garza would be a clue as how not to trade and how to trade a pitcher.. The best return came when he had established value. When he still had an uncertain future, he brought back a player of an uncertain future. After a bad season and with a long contract, he is almost untradeable. Right now Gibson would bring back a lottery ticket. Another couple good years and he could net a better return.
  10. There would be an international draft only if it saves the owners money. The draft pool seems to be working and is cheap. With the pools being between 2 and 5 million a team there is not a whole lot lower you can go to use as a bargaining chip. That chip would be used by the players to get more for themselves.
  11. The Montreal Expos which became the Nationals were founded in 1969, Hardly newish. Beane was promoted to executive vice president, hardly let go. Minnesota baseball since 1961 has always been about the bottom line. It is not going to change any time soon.
  12. Over the same time period Toronto, Baltimore, Seattle, Oakland, Washington, Pittsburgh, The Cubs, Cincinnati, Milwaukee and the Dodgers have not been there. Big markets, small markets. Genius GM, not genius GM. Free spenders, tightwads. Hunnington has had 8 years with the Pirates. Is he a bad GM because he has not gotten his team to the Series. Beane has been in Oakland since 1998. By your criteria then are these bad Gms?
  13. It works in fantasy leagues
  14. The Blue Jays analytics are done by Joe Sheehan
  15. Epstien had had the resources of Ford or Volkswagen while Ryan is dealing with more of a Renault type funded organization. In the holiday analogy, Epstien got to work for Santa, Ryan got the cranky Scrooge.
  16. When you talk of Moore's abilities consider this (from the site I references earlier for Dave) Draft Choices Who Have Appeared In The Majors The following table represents the players selected in the amateur draft during the tenure of Dayton Moore who have progressed to the major leagues. Moore was named General Manager on May 30, 2006, ahead of the 2006 draft. He did not assume the role of GM until June 8, 2006, after the draft was completed. Debut Player POS Draft Round 8/2/10 Greg Holland P 2007 10 3/31/11 Aaron Crow P 2009 1 4/21/11 Louis Coleman P 2009 5 5/6/11 Eric Hosmer 1B 2008 1 5/18/11 Danny Duffy P 2007 3 6/10/11 Mike Moustakas 3B 2007 1 8/5/11 Johnny Giavotella 2B 2008 2 I have to add a disclaimer:The author does not players traded away like Meyers. oops
  17. Yup proof of the trades http://www.royalsauthority.com/dayton-moore-history/ Proof of time and again, not so much
  18. . #2 Cleveland (shedding Bourne and Swisher and actually picking up Chris Johnson is nice, also getting LHP Rob Kaminsky for Brandon Moss was even better. They've added a slough of OF'ers to help replace Brantley; Whose lost for half of next yr. -Shane Robinson being one of them. ---- Part of why I tend to like they're off-season is just by keeping their young rotation in tact benefits them because by far and away they have the best rotation in our division...Well, at least untill the Tigers had to get Daniel Norris and Zimmerman) Chris Johnson was designated for assignment. So far no one has claimed him.
  19. Average ticket price in Boston is in the $50 range, Twins closer to 30, San Diego was 16. Pittsburgh $20 Baseball ticket prices are not based on the quality of the team but more on the optimization of revenue from the base. If you do not want to pay their prices then your option is to not go. Traveling to another city does not lower your cost to see a game.
  20. Skill as a player does not always translate to a skill as an organizer, teacher and leader. It also doesn't mean you understand the nuances of the game.
  21. The half that was bad was really bad. Batting practice bad
  22. Looks like a great deal for the Dodgers
  23. They all knew who was on the list. They thought their guys were better otherwise they would not have protected one of them. They passed.
  24. Jones has yet to make a 25 man roster. The Brewers might be a bad enough club to be trying to play for number one. so he could make the roster 29 teams passed on him once. 5 teams passed on him twice. As San Diego was trading for rule 5 picks, San Diego passed on him at least 20 times. Yes he has a chance to be a good player. In 4 years he has shown promise. That is all. No big deal. It is likely the Twins will get offered something in trade. I hope they select wisely
  25. The GM who made that trade no longer works as a GM. Any bets on the scout who reccomended that trade still being employed?
