  1. Levi, get out the AED I agree with you
  2. The title said "attitude gap" When you look back at the Tom Kelly Twins it was said that no one worked harder than they did. They did extra. Sometimes I get the impression that the team has lost that. Fundamentals, basics, repetitions. Perhaps Hunter is a throwback to that time as he came up when some were still here he had that kind of work ethic. It is not 100% on the field, it is the 100% off the field that may be missing. According to baseball edge 381of some degree of catchable balls were hit to RF. 55 ended up not caught. They did, according to Inside Edge, lead the league in 0% balls caught in RF. Hunter was better in geting to balls that they thought a RF should get to. He did not get to any that were not in range. I Hunter probably knows how to play the hops, angles and back up the cf better. I do not know if it will make it a wash have a better outcome when the ball is bouncing out there. Back in the day the Twins were a low revenue team, low budget team. I don't really care what Ryan did then. It is a different set of circumstances now,. Free agent compensation is different. The Twin's revenue stream is different. The 2011 team that Ryan took over had 14 players making over 2 mill a year. Only Baker and Cuddyer were worth the money. He doesn't want to get in that situation again. The stats projectiion guys must have shown him some worth for the Hunter contract.
  3. Due dialagence would be an MRI. While thre would be a debate over if any pitcher has a normal UCL after a while, Sanatana should have 3 MRIs in the last three years with KC, Atlanta and now the Twins. If three were changes they would have been spotted.
  4. Are the Twins spending enough money? No. Not when 2 players say that spent part of the year injured as a reason why they underperformed and none of the medical or analytical staff could figure it our. They are not paying enough money somewhere
  5. Rizzo was obtained for Chisner who might become a very player. Arrieta for Feldman. Way too soon to say if the Samardzija/Hammels trade was good or bad, so I will put it this way, 1 very good trade that could end up being just a good trade, and1 very good trade, is about all Chicago has for all of their manipulations. The yhave useful parts to show for their signings. Useful parts should fill out a roster, not fill your roster. The Ryan trades, signings and the like? Hughes to the very good. Useful parts, the Twins have obtained numerous useful parts. Escobar might be in the decent trade category if he holds the starting SS position. Nolasco may rebound into being better than a useful part. Then again, so couldn't Jackson The Cubs have a minor league full of potential that have a little bit more time in the major leaues that the Twins minor league players that are full of potential. So are the Twins spending enough money? No, they need to pay someone to smuggle them decent scouting reports on Cuban players. For next season the answer comes at the end of the year. They did not add anything real bad in terms of how they spent their money. I doubt if there was much better they could have spent their money on thusfar that would been better. They still need to buy some bullpen help, which also leaves the answer as is no.
  6. In regards to the term of rushing players . You can call it rushing when a player does not spend much, if any, time in AA.A Hicks would be the prime example most cited here. Vargas certainly did ok without spending much time even in AA. I would think a player that would be called rushed had trouble adjusting to the pitching. Hicks had a 16% BB% last year when the league average was 7.6% Hicks would appear to have an idea where the ball is going but can't match the eye withhands and bat to the mlb pitch. I don't know if AAA can fix that. I do not know what is wrong, but being in the minors for 2013 did not change anything. I do not think then that Hicks was rushed.
  7. In response to the fangraphs article. Hughes K% is fine, Nolasco's career average for K% is fine at 19% Santana has a career K % of 18.9 Trevor May, if he is the 5th starter has a career so far of 20.9. Kyle Gibson's for the season sucked, but looks (apologies if my eyes are bad on the eye test, I took off the rose colored glasses first) as if improved over the second half from the first. Corera, Deduno and Swarzak are gone as well as Pino. They all contributed mightily to the low part of the curve. The chart had the avege IP of Twins starters at less than 120 IP. If the average IP of the first 5 starter are 170 and the replacements are Milone (15.9% career k%) or Meyer (27% or better in the upper minors) the Twins' starters should have a representative K% What appears worse is the bullpen K%. May they bring in 4 beter pitchers
  8. A bounceback sort of year for Nolasco would be similar to the year Wilson had last year in a bad year
  9. If his NY experience was that bad and his experience here that good it would not be unreasonable for him to sign an extension.
  10. 1.70ERA for Tampa. Time will if Smyly is a front, back or middle of rotation kind of pitcher. Adams is an 19 year old from the Dominican. Middle infielder. Time will tell if he is fringe or not. Franklin is 23, was a top 100 prospect until being promoted to the majors and still developing as a player Odorizzi pitched like a middle of the rotation starter, Myers played poorly last year. Patterson is stuck at AA level and the other guy is in A ball. You will not know which is a better trade for a while. Still does not settle what the Twins would have to get a top pitcher in trade w/o Buxton/Sano included
  11. Fans can express an unobjective view about any aspect of their team, positive or negative. The ammount of endless complaining could make you wonder if you need to post the suicide hotline numer or a therapist. Not very often here the last few years, but there are times you want to break the rose colored glasses. Ryan to Toronto? That would move Ryan further away from the field. It could get him a raise, but I think if he wanted more money, Ryan would ask. On the plus side if Ryan were to take the Toronto job, there would be quite a few volunteers to help him move, and pack up his crew, too. Somebody from Pennsylvania would drive to help
  12. Shane Robinson is AAA filler. A backup disaster plan in case Polanco isn't ready as a plan C.
  13. What Twin player would be the Drew Smyly part of the trade? The Rays got a lot more back than fringe prospects.
  14. If you are only using stats to base stating why a player is good or bad isn't that only using stats because you are not mentioning what else a player does?
  15. The Inside edge data also leads me to ask this question. Would the data say that the Twins are not concerned about the player making the impossible play because the average outcome when they miss is worse than when they do make the routine play. That is dive for the ball, miss and now it is multiple bases versus keeping the ball in front of you.
  16. Fangraphs has some handy dany information. If you look at league average for on inside edge and compare it to Torri you wouls find Torii looks league average except on impossible and greater than 90%. Hunter made 203 out of 208 90-100% catches League average would have been 2. No real big deal either way. Hunter made 0 imossible catches. There were 1865 in the alsost 43613.2 innings played. In Hunter's 1114 ininngs then he should have 47, about one every 3 games. The eye test to overcome all this is what happens on the 47 balls hit his way with some chance to catch and he did not as well as when he retrieves the impossible to catch but people do balls. 5 outfield assists, the best was 12 doesn't say much. 5 errors versus the best being 0 and the worst being 6 for the qualified outfielders. If someone knows where there is a stat for "they got an extra base they should not have" it would be helpful. The single that turns into multiple bases, the person tagging up or not. The runner getting the extra base. That is the eye test statistic. I don't know one way or another about Hunter.
  17. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2014/10/29/political-ad-torii-hunter-sounds-gays/18152049/ Here is where you can find the ad theat Hunter made for the politician in case no one has posted it.
  18. Hunter has political viewpoints. All people do. No doubt Hunter was called what he called Berndadino for his viewpoints. Deadspin merely reported the event. No credibility issues there. One should be carefull about labeling media sources as credible. Pundifact checked the media outlets and found basicaly none of them are straight shooters.
  19. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=rf&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=3&season=2014&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 I don't know quite what to make of the numbers. Yes Hunter is at the bottom of the list. Compared to average numbers it looks like Hunter did't get to about 6-7 balls all season that an average or above average outfielder would have. Expand the list out and you find for the time he was out there, Parmelee played an above average RF.
  20. Inherited runners scored Anthony Swarzak P MIN 16 Brian Duensing P MIN 13 Michael Tonkin P MIN 6 Runners stranded Brian Duensing P MIN 28 Anthony Swarzak P MIN 19 Michael Tonkin P MIN 16 Runs allowed Anthony Swarzak P MIN 48 Brian Duensing P MIN 20 Michael Tonkin P MIN 13 Why Swarzak is looking for employment, Tonkin went to the minors and Duensing should be nervous
  21. What does age start? You look at every other factor and where that person fits on a generic age curve gets thrown out. Parmelee could OPS and play the field pretty much how he has been playing until he is 40. It is not going to happen. If his level of play doesn't improve, he will be out of the league by 30 because there will be somebody cheaper with more upside come along or they were not very good in the first place and got their shot.. From the last few years Twins alone Johnson, Darnell, Thompson Achter, Mastroiani, Nunez, Fryer, Hermann, Florimon, Thomas, Ramirex, Diaomond, Pedro Hernandez, Martis, Tyler Robertson, Albers, Walters, Komatsu, Nisihioka, Luke Hughes, DeVries, Matt Maloney, Manhip, Waldrop, Vasquez, Grey, Burnett, and Perdoma are all highly unlikely to be in a major league uniform when they are 31. They all count against that age curve. You would be hard pressed to say they were out of the league because their skills declined with age. Their skills did not develop further to keep them on a roster. Valencia, Alexi Casilla, Hicks, Pinto, Shaffer, Parmelee and Escobar could all fit that model.
  22. http://www.greatest21days.com/2014/09/interview-part-2-butch-davis-simple-fact.html It links a couple other stories about Davis.
  23. Yes. The age curves are different. They do not mean much. What an individual does can be far different than the average. Would you say you shouldn't extend an outfielder multiple years past the age of 33? You would say makes sense to do one year at a time for a Josh Willingham in hindsight. Torri Hunter on the other hand. produced multiple years past 33. Age alone doesn't mean much. Similar batters by age to Plouffe at 28 are Dave Hollins and Jose Batista. Their career paths from 28 are very divergent. Average for age means nothing.
