  1. Good players that produce WAR get traded. Sometimes they are traded for prospects. Those prospects produce WAR. Sometimes the good player stays with the new team even though they could have become a free agent and thus their WAR counts as a traded player It shouldn't be a shocker in this baseball economy that good players are traded and what they are traded for produce..The table shows that some teams probably trade more than others to produce the 2014 team.
  2. Schafer was a round 3 pick. It wouldbe unfair to label him a bust. A breakout season is highly unlikely as I do not see in his history where he has been above average as a hitter. What has not been there is not going to happen.
  3. You still haven't answered why external candidates matter. Any of the coaches hired have spent a good deal of time outside of the Twins organization. It would be absurd to me to think they forget what they learned elsewhere as they spend time with the Twins organization.
  4. They would have been so much better off keeping what they had and ignoring the Japanese player they signed.
  5. Jimenez had one good year in the last 4. I do not know if Callaway in Cleveland had him doing something different that year, or if Cash or Belcher had any influence on the one good season. Cash might be a good hire as a pitching coach, but Jimenez might not be a good hire as a pitcher.
  6. Perkins Garza, Baker, Blackburn all came up through the system rather quickly.. Berrios is doing that now. Gibson would have except for arm issues. Odorizzi may have been called up, but the pitching savvy Rays sent him down the following year. Had Meyer not have had shoulder issues the Twins might have brought him up for September. There are differernt issues for each pitcher. To say that the Twins handling of Meyer represents an overly cautious system is a stretch. The biggest problem in assessing how the Twins handle a drafted pitcher's progression to a major leauge caliber starter is that there was such a dry strech that there is not a reference point.
  7. It would be a better book by Boras if he could have documented how Scherzer will perform better than the aging curve. All it takes is one team. Figuring out which team is the hard part being that there are options in Shields and Lester. I am not sure there is a conventional wisdom on which teams could pay that much for a pitcher and how many there are.
  8. The Mets must like former Colorado OF. A part time Cuddyer is still better than Eric Young for the Mets. They must have very little in their upper minor leagues for outfielders. Drafting is a crap shoot. FWIW, the last 15th selection to produce was Stephan Drew. If the Mets get a couple of solid Cuddyer type years they are probably ahead
  9. Baseball managers work on the whim of someone else. They all know that going into the business. There should be no awkward moments because of hiring and firings. Now when Epstein meets any of his hired Cubs managers there might be a problem as a really doubt any of them should feel like they should have been fired. The fired manager shouldn't blame the guy who came later. Renteria knew sooner or later he would be fired. The reason now might be more palatable than Sveum's firing. While there may be more jobs heading global 2000 companies, there is still a finite number of jobs and a larger pool of people to do the job. More jobs, more competition for the same job, maybe less options for a similar job.
  10. A HOF pitcher would have more talent than the average pitching coach. I don't think any of them did not have to work at refining their talent. In term of having money inhibiting the desire to work, Molitor made over 40 million in his career,
  11. The list thins out quickly. I think from the list the imports might be the best bet for the money on the length of the contract it would take to sign them.
  12. Trading season is when fans dream up these lovely one sided trades. some combination of the bottom 15 of the 40 man roster and any C prospects in the system for a very good player. Who will this winter's Duensing and Swarzak?
  13. Wow. The list of bad players signed, extended, traded for or drafted is much much longer than the list of good for last year.
  14. If the agent contacted 4-5 teams and the agent says there was no contact with the Twins, it would seem that Maddon or the agent are not interested in the Twins.
  15. There are trends to what people post. If there is a perceived wrong with the Twins some one will comment, more will take up the cause. It is called loving to complain about those you love.
  16. Perhaps the Twins analytic department figured out that a manager who had 4 good to Ace starting pitchers every year and multiiple All Stsar players on the field had his team actually underperforming despite his baseball knowledge. Maddon may be the smartest baseball mind in the world, but he has no ring. He had a good 6 year run but no ring. I don't really think Tampa will be very good this year. Maddon left stating something about building a contender. Both he and Friedman leave before any genius reputation can be tarnished by a bad team. See Gardenhire, Ron.
  17. AJ settled for less money, Salty the catcher IIRC did also. The offer to Garza was not lowball. The auction house theory is incorrect
  18. People labeling arguements strawmen when they themselves post conjecture is my pet peeve.
  19. Terry Anderson You question why a GM would exert a little control into the hiring process? Then there is the little thing of the GM is the managers boss. I have had interviews with superiors of the boss. If the role is important enough the supervisor was there.
  20. Do you think Rosatio read about the need for a left fielder and got inspired.
  21. 5 years out to judge high school and IFA is a little early. The early returns would be the class of 09 was not great. How do you asess how good a class is at this point? A college player that was a very good one should have a few years in. With the Trout exceprtio, the very top of the 18 year olds are getting their first full season done with,. The IFA would be just starting to get a September call up.. Right now from the class of 09 you could come up with 20 players that have proved they are good players. The Twins have one in Dozier. Being that the Cards managed 5, that would put the Twins above average.
  22. Pretty much all teams do it wrong as with very few exceptions, the person ends up fired.
  23. If you look at attendance numbers around the league nothing draws them in like a winning team. FSN rating also show this. I did not look up other teams. Fan numbers go up with a streak of playoff appearances Tampa Bay being an exception. I am not sure how to alter the rules to get teams to get a cycle of winning going.
  24. The Twins need to not be in love with any of their players. They need to objectly look at their talent coming up and the talent on the major league roste. They need to make a Will Meyers kind of move to upgrade the talent on the big league roster and trade players who have more value than internal team projection. An example would be Joreg Polanco. He did well at the majors for his tryout. Can he be a part of a package that gets you a star pitcher, or was what was shown the tip of the iceberg? Can Dozier and Plouffe continue to do what they did in 2014. Can they get better. If a trade win shows up, Plouffe and a top 5-15 prospect for Tiijuan Walker for example.
  25. Here then is another problem. The Twins bullpen pitched almost 500 innings last year. That really wasn't good on a 8 man staff.
