  1. I feel he will not be with the club after this year. Too much money and 2 or 3 cheap options in the minors. This is a business, and while his trade value is not high, he and a prospect could fetch a decent pitcher.
  2. Most of the top flight prospects are at AA. AAA is for players who are regarded as immediate help for injury or lack of performance at the major league level. Also players who have already dominated AA and have nothing more to learn at that level.
  3. Did not quite know the farm was that loaded. Probably will need to move some of these players and others will fail. Am high on most of the top two groups. Only a couple of the lower group concern me.
  4. Let's break this down. 1. With the signings of Sano and Donaldson, not only is Rosario a trade chip, but so is one of Kirloff and Larnich, that is an incentive to getting a good pitcher from a non competitive team (this does not include Rooker, Raley and some others at a lower tier. 2. Twins have 8 - 10 pitchers in the top two minor league levels this year, who could be ace to average major league pitchers. Developing your own pitchers in the fastest way to stay competitive over a long window. It also helps your overall budget. Twins FO seems to be staying away from signing longterm contracts for pitchers over 30 who are not close to ace like. This seems to me to be wise, as pitchers can decline a lot faster than position players. 3. Somewhere around 2023 the Twins will be able to have a new media contract. This is huge as it will at some amount of spendable revenue above and beyond to the income stream. Twins will have to be wise, but have a chance to have a very good to great team over the next 4 - 5 years for sure, probably more if they make the right moves.
  5. You still have 5 - 6 ballclubs that look better on paper. Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Nationals for sure and then the Rays, Boston, Cubs all in the same area. What do all of these clubs (maybe minus Boston and the Cubs) have in common, very good pitching. This is the hump the Twins have to climb over. A lot can change, one key injury, players doing quick declines, and the fact the Yankees have a super club right now all play into the odds.
  6. There is a risk/reward here. I am more in favor of a 1 year rental (which should not be too expensive). If you buy a long term pitcher(not bad) the following probably happen. You are not extending Odorizzi (in all probability). You are delaying learning which of the multiple minor league pitchers will grow into major league players (and possibly stars) You are using one or two of them in the trade for the ace (hope you don't trade an ace away). You are forced to pay Berrios what he wants, since you have traded some of your depth to find the right pitchers. Don't care if you want this line, but the front office will have to be close to 100% right on all these points if you do it.
  7. My feeling is that Walker wanted more than clubs were willing to offer or the medicals were iffy. Still might happen, but don't know where.
  8. Let's look at it this way. If Gratrol, Balazovic, Duran, Enlow, Sands are at AA. That is to go with Thorpe, Smeltzer, Dobnich. That is 8 possible starters here in the next two years. And there are more. Now if you do not believe that 2 - 3 of these pitchers or more can make it, then you need to buy a front line starter at no matter what the cost. I do not believe that, so Twins need to secure the future by finding out what these pitchers can do at the highest level or at least at AAA. By all means extend Odo and Berrios, but to buy mid level starters to block this group, will lead to the problem of any deal you want to make will ask for at least 2 of these pitchers, and most of you will have pitchforks out if one of them blossoms into an ace.
  9. I agree with a lot of the posters here. I would like to see a front line starting pitcher, but it could be that pitcher is already in the organization and will be here this year. I am looking at the higher end starters and feel one of them will step forward and make it.
  10. We do not know if some of the players just would not take the Twins money. This gives a base until we can find which young pitchers will produce.
  11. Spin rate seems to be the mantra of this FO. This could be an issue here, or Thorpe has to refine his command to being able to hit his spots to a much greater degree than other pitchers. Can this be done, yes, but can he succeed? It seems to be a much more narrow plane than some other pitchers with better stuff. Maybe if you feel his ceiling is a #4 starter, you use him as part of a trade package to get better pitching.
  12. I think the offers are in the 4/100 range, to get Donaldson, I think the Twins are going to have to go into the 4/110 range. Otherwise the money will be close and he will stay in the National League.
  13. Yankees looked like they planned for this. Otherwise they would be pushing much harder to trade Happ. Seems like what I saw the suspension will be for more than a month. That is not that long.
  14. Cardinals as noted above are a good model, not always great, but always competitive. I just hope they add the talent to put us over the top at the correct point. But they seem to be off to a good start.
  15. If you fully read the mlbtraderumors page, they are now expecting Donaldson to get over $100 million for the contract, one of pieces I read somewhere thought it might take $108 million.
  16. If you believe that the Gastrol and some of the rest are ready by 2021 this is the right move. If you do not believe this it could be a disaster. I would rather do this and use the extra money for 1 more signing and extend Berrios and Buxton at this time, possibly Sano also. If they refuse, then Twins will have to look at trading them within the next year, so they just do not walk(even with a qualifing offer) and the end of 2022. You have another year for most of them, but lets try and get it done now.
  17. Someone will buy Price, whether it be the Twins, the White Sox, or the Padres. Question is the cost to Boston. Biggest Twins issue is if it is the White Sox they will have an impressive starting rotation (on paper). Do not want to overspend, but unless we can get Archer for little, may have to go this direction. Am hoping the FO is not in the our pitching depth in the minors will work out.
  18. I like both of the ideas above, either to use him as a primary pitcher after the opener, or to pair him with Oderizzi, going 3 - 4 innings or 1 time through the order. Would want this to be paired with a bat (hopefully Donaldson). This could work.
  19. It's easier to sell lottery tickets at the deadline. Clubs are more worried about getting nothing for their assets.
  20. Internal options are still the best, and it is still 6 - 7 weeks left before spring training. See what happens, Twins still have 3 - 5 very top end pitchers that have made it to AA or higher last year. Didn't want to have to bank on them, but now may have little choice. Much more worried that the Indians might sell another of their top line pitchers if the price is right. Dodgers are said to be interested, and they have a key piece (Lux).
  21. I like the 2 year around $10 million for the two, with a mutual option or team option for the third, may take more like 12 - 14 for the two.
  22. Could be a good move, but feel you are very high on the dollars. I like the two year contract with maybe a mutual option for a third. Depends on what the Twins see in him and what he wants for dollars.
  23. Both are solid signings, but neither moves the needle much in creating a winning team. It is unlikely either would block anyone, Caberra will now be a full time DH when healthy. Detroit needed to move closer to 60 - 70 wins, but still needs a ton of pitching help.
  24. If the Twins are going to suceed until they get a new TV contract, some of the younger pitchers are going to have to step up. Twins are not going to pay everyone in their current core, nor are all of them going to stay after 6 years. That being said an extension for Berrios is a necessity this winter. Otherwise you will have to look at him leaving after 6 years. Other thing is that you have to identify Boris clients and if they are not willing to take an extension, you must move them after 4 years to maximize return. It sucks, but if you are not going to pay the going rate, this is the only sustainable way.
