  1. Unless you believe the Twins can rip off a 10 game winning streak or a couple of 7 gamers, we are not getting back into the race and we only have a month to do this. At the current time the last wild card position is +14, we are -12. That is 13 games and multiple teams to pass. We are going to need to clean up the 40 man roster, or will lose useful players in the rule 5 draft. And all clubs know this. We will also need to find out how many pitchers close to the majors are possible keepers. Also if we trade some players for multiple prospects, where will they go. Twins have been a bit unlucky on the injury bug, and the FO misguessed on the bullpen. I think you are dreaming if you don't think this is a problem.
  2. It already has, the last 3 players the Twins DFA'ed all where claimed. That is the first sign of an issue. Plus if neither Buxton or Berrios agree to an extension you have to trade them unless all you get is buy low offers (and given the CBA and the Twins roster crunch can see that happening). The CBA issue will throw a monkey wrench into this years trade market, unless you are certain your club will make the playoffs. And I don't see the Twins trading a major player to the White Sox who really need both Buxton and Berrios. What is your plan for this fall when Twins still have to add 6 - 7 players to the 40 man, and still have useful pieces at the bottom (ie like Gordon).
  3. I am not joking, this has been commented on in other places. In fact I can see the players in the new CBA wanting to stop the shuttle and force teams to keep players or release them to other opportunities.
  4. Twins have surplus, they have difficult 40 man roster decisions at the end of the year. Look how many DFAed players the Twins have lost. Sano is a sunk cost. Kepler will have a regular position only if you have to trade Buxton.(maybe) Kepler has great value with his contract to multiple teams because he can fit almost any budget. Maybe trade to TB for some of their surplus pitching and prospects.
  5. Yes, but key here is whether Berrios is extended or traded. If he will not sign here you are more into a rebuild (especially if Buxton will not sign either), We need to find out if any of the 4 - 5 decent starter prospects will pan out (best guess is 1 - 2). That will lower the spend. We may get lucky and find 3, but we need to know. That is what the rest of this season is about. Look at Cleveland, they always seem to find enough pitching to be above .500, we need to go that route.
  6. If you take away his outfield spot, he won't get enough abats as a utility infielder unless you plan to trade Donaldson. You have to see what Gordon can do the rest of this year, (he is old enough, he may be only a short term option (re his brother), but for next year you have to know).
  7. So might some of us, but not going to happen. Would much prefer they put their money into pitching. Pitching wins.
  8. You can subtract your bottom 5 relievers with 2 - 3 rookies and hopefully a good FA signing or two. Most of that should happen this year with cutting bait on Smeltzer, Farrell, Stachek, Thorpe, and maybe Thielbar (hopefully trade him to a team that needs bullpen help this year (most contenders do). Starting pitching needs an upgrade unless this is a total teardown, but the good news is the offense does not need more money. Garver as stated about is a very good trade chip, and probably should go that way.
  9. First if you can't get Buxton to agree to an extension you have to trade him if it works. My guess with next year being unknown you will not get good value for him (unless you can find a bidding war). Gordon right now is SSS, give it another month before deciding what to do with him. He or Polanco could man short for a year until Lewis or Javier (hope, hope) arrive and take the position. Sano has no trade value except as a give away or a throw in. Kepler could be the odd man out in the outfield if you are able to extend Buxton, and you have to find a spot for Arraez. Cruz is as good as gone along with Simmons. We still have a month, so this list may change, but that is what I see.
  10. Shoemaker will be gone soon enough, give it some time.
  11. This was bound to happen at some point, when the young outfields seem to be doing ok, and Arraez can cover most of the infield. Next man out could well be Sano.
  12. I liked it at the time, it did not work out. Ok, not all will.
  13. 5/100 will not get it done, if that were the price I believe it would have been done now. With no guarantee of a season next year buy prices might be lower than we believe, tough position. Berrios may command 1 100 top prospect (probably 50 - 75) range and other pieces. I do believe this FO has a clue, so it would probably work out, but don't want to go there.
  14. I think his agent has a clue. At least one team will pay him funny money and that is all it takes. It could be 6/150 or more, we don't know the ask(Yankees or Mets come to mind). Good pitching plus wins, I am in favor of paying him (more than Buxton, and that could be a mistake too), but only the FO knows the ask. If you start getting up near Cole and Bauer money it gets tough. A good # 2 starter is now 20+ a year, Berrios is that. If he wants ace money, that is where it becomes difficult.
  15. Problem is if you don't sign him and he walks the return could well be zero. How far will that set the franchise back
  16. I am thinking many of you are light 5/110 or 6/140 come to mind as what he will command with another good year (2022) before FA. If you can't get it done in the next 6 weeks we must trade him (as painful as it might be). We don't know what the next CBA will be, and it will probably be tweeked or more in the players favor, because of the other issues. Maybe compensation goes away totally. Get it done or move on.
  17. I feel by season's end this club will not be close to the worst pitching staff. FO overestimated the ability or what they had left of 4 pitchers who account for some of the issues(Happ,Shoemaker, colume, Dobnak). Also cameos by Smeltzer, stashak. Relief pitchers vary wildly year by year, but we needed better starting pitching. Time to cut bait and bring up the youngsters, can't be any worse than what we have now.
  18. It's about time. Great to see this happen.
  19. It proves that good starting pitching wins or at least gives you a good chance to win the game. Looks like Ober is a part of the future, let's try some other of the young pitchers and see what we have. Maybe the FO is hoping Happ and Shoemaker can pitch well enough to draw some interest, does not look like that is going to happen, so cut our losses.
  20. Followed by Shoemaker.
  21. Dobnak should be the next to go. There will be plenty of roster moves if this does not turn around in the next 6 weeks.
  22. I am still in the fire Rocco camp as you can't fire the players. (all of them). As far as pitching, we don't know yet as it takes a fair number of years before changes show up, will be much more concerned if we can't develop pitching two years from now. We might as well trade, let a fair number of veteran pitchers go to see what the kids do. We still have the issue I have noted elsewhere with Berrios and buxton. You either have to extend them or trade them this midseason to get maximum value and I will not give the front office a pass if they do neither. That is a Pohlad decision as it involves money, but both should be able to bring top 100 prospects (in Buxton's case maybe multiple) in return. Pineda is another player you have to make a decision with (I am more with the resigning than trading). A lot of these factors all play together.
  23. Depends on your view. If a retool then 2 - 3 years at about 14 - 15 seems about right. if a rebuild then trade him. I tend most of this depends on whether you can resign either Berrios or Buxton. If not either and you are trading both, then you are talking probably 2024 to see results. Pitching pipeline seems to be coming, not so sure of the hitting.
  24. Do not think either Buxton or Kepler will be back quickly, maybe close to the end of June from what I am seeing (about 20 days if we are lucky). Turtle will just be needed to fill in elsewhere.
