    A victory and the Twins will be in third place! Very interesting that Arcia gets moved to right when Hunter is out of the lineup and apprentice OF Escobar replaces him. It tells me that when Hunter's time is up as a Twin, the new right fielder for the Twins will be Oswaldo Arcia.

    Regarding the guys in AAA, Pinto had four hits today and now is hitting .364, while Hicks was 0-6 and is now hitting .222. Pinto has shown that he can hit AAA pitching, so unless his defense or his health are an issue, bring him up! IMHO, Hicks hasn't mastered Triple A and the splits remain troubling. If the Twins want a better-fielding Bombo Rivera or Pedro Muñoz, they can call him up and platoon him. I hope he "gets it" against right handed pitching or his value will diminish to platoon/fourth OF. BTW, if an outfielder goes, it wouldn't surprise me if it were Schafer ahead of Robinson. Robinson is what he his--this year's version of Jason Repko--fine fielder at all three spots, limited hitter. I haven't seen all the games, but it is my understanding that Schafer has been pretty bad in center.

    It is really early to decide whether someone is hitting or not. Hicks was under .200 until his three-hit day. All of a sudden, he is tearing up AAA because he had a good game? I was opposed to Hicks abandoning switch hitting and remain so. It is questionable he'll ever hit well against RH pitching as a left handed hitter. It is much more doubtful that he would ever thrive as solely a right hander. Give the guys 'til the end of the month to show something. If failure continues, abandon a bad plan and go with the kids.

    Arcia: Yes, he needs to hustle all the time and yes, he shows emotion and most of us like that. That is style. On substance, his swing gets long while he's trying to hit 500 ft. homers, he needs to shorten that swing and settle for more singles and doubles. The home runs will come, but not if he keeps trying to hit it 500 feet.

    What is the best way to get him moving toward his potential upside? Honestly, I think he needs to modify his approach a bit. He really takes far too many "no chance" at-bats.

    I remain mostly unimpressed and 100% puzzled by Arcia. His minor league resumé says hitter not slugger, but he has seemed to adopt Mark Reynolds as a model rather than somebody like Bobby Abreu. Arcia is not long and lean, he well-muscled and wide, but he has the speed and the arm to be a capable base runner and defender. So far, his value is derived almost completely from hitting the ball over the fence. He seems to have stagnated in recognizing pitches and is neutralized by left handed pitching. From the behind the scenes rumbling to his not starting two of the first six games, it looks like Arcia might be the player that the Twins choose to be an example. I still like Arcia's potential, but he needs to show progress in developing his overall game.

    Milone with a 1-2-3 inning including a strike out. Not to be Captain Obvious, but his change is pretty effective if he can manage to get ahead on the count.

    Power was a Puerto Rican and I remember the announcers calling him "flashy". He solidified the defense in the infield for sure, but Harmon had to play left field. Stigman was a Minnesota native, from tiny Nimrod in northern Minnesota. He had a couple good years with the Twins.

    In the traditional view of steroid users, I think Ervin Santana would be an unlikely candidate to be a steroid user. My brother and I both commented about how slight he is (in person), which is not the typical view of steroid user (Bonds, A-Rod etc). On closer examination, and considering the properties of the steroid he used, it makes more sense that a 30-something pitcher with a UCL injury might use something to deal with recovery from stress on the UCL. I agree that 100% of the blame needs to be laid on the doorstep of the abuser. It has become the accepted response to issue a non-denial denial or more accurately an non-admission admission of guilt. I wish he would just tell the truth, but there is acceptance of such statements.

    There are plenty of unanswered questions in the Santana case. Probably the least likely thing is that he unknowingly took steroids. The biggest question going forward is whether this drug was used to deal with his UCL injury. If it was, the chances that he will be able to pitch well without surgery would take a dramatic drop.

    I think stability will improve the OF defense. The Twins must have had at least eight guys start more than ten games in the outfield. Many of them didn't belong.

    I wrote a long time ago that this spring Pelfrey is both fully healthy and fully recovered from TJ surgery and I don't think that is really a redundancy. He has spent two wasted years with the Twins and he could be a serviceable starter, perhaps as much as a #3. The problem is that so much of the team is populated with low-upside long shots. Some may pan out, but the net gain is small especially for the dollars expended.

    We don't know how long Santana has used steroids. We do know he will now be a suspect if he performs well and will be castigated if he performs poorly. I am sure he will be next to untradeable after this.

    What a mess. Let me first comment on Santana. There is no excuse! The sliver of good news is that he is denied more than $6M, as it should be. Regarding Pelfrey: Put up or shut up. He is healthy, well-paid, and has contributed next to nothing for the past two years. Third and last chance with the Twins. If he doesn't perform well, he will have no one to blame but himself. Personally, I like Pelfrey and wish him the best, but the leash should be really short. Thompson or Thielbar? Burger King or McDonalds. Neither is fine dining or ever will be. I have bowed to Mr. Ryan's knowledge on a many topics, but each unexplainable decision has eroded my confidence to the point that I have to wonder if the game has passed him by. He doesn't share more than he has to, nor does he have to, but this continuing series of low-upside older players is very hard to defend.

    There is a possibility Shane is right when Pinto is 100%. Nuñez could go and Herrmann could stay. Herrmann has an option remaining, so he could move back and forth freely, while Nuñez does not. At this point, Nuñez is pretty redundant to Robinson/Escobar, but one injury moves Escobar into regular status and makes Nuñez a pretty important bench player. Beyond Nuñez, the next best utility infielder is.............Doug Bernier? Despite his flaws, I think Nuñez needs to stay on the roster.
