  1. I agree. DFA for removing a player from the 40-man, as was the case for Park, is accomplished through the use of Special Waivers, which are irrevocable. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/principles/contract-details/waivers/ The kind of waivers that can be revoked are of use only when trying to construct a trade after the July 31 deadline until the end of the season. I hate to harp, but misinformation has a way of making the rounds once started.
  2. Apparently the Twins' new FO couldn't stand Pat. *rim shot* *rim shot* *sad trombone*
  3. "...a New York-based real estate developer" ... "The hangup in the reported agreement for the time being is that the potential buyer does not have enough liquid assets to make the purchase, as the majority of his net worth is tied up in real estate investments." This is gonna be Yuge! Bigly!
  4. Backhanded? Seems an utterly straightforward attempt to boost offense.
  5. My point was that it's not a question of "will", but of "can". He simply can not be claimed. The CBA doesn't allow it.
  6. We make a good team. I provide the bland useless skepticism, you provide the facts.
  7. I'm not an expert on the collective bargaining agreement, but I would be absolutely shocked if you could get around a no-trade provision (either in a contract, or just by virtue of being a 10/5 guy) through DFA shenanigans and have him wind up on another team or in the minors or anything else. A player with no-trade rights can not be told, "no, you can either earn your salary by playing for this other team, or retire and forfeit your salary." Having the team's financial obligation to him magically taken off their hands is less than a pipe dream. A DFA of Joe Mauer means one thing only: releasing him and eating the remaining contract. No financial resources would be freed up, just the roster spot. So forget about the money: is he so bad that, if he cost nothing, you would not put him on the 25-man?
  8. You're talking about for 2017? I don't see his bat as being ready for MLB. He'd be doing well to OPS above .600.
  9. Jeff Kent is on the list at age 29, and he's the one I would hope for. The others on the list, not so much.
  10. A quick review of YouTube video clips reveals that he retained his comic timing well into his 90s. He's one of the rare Celebrity Death Pool draftees who will cost you points in certain systems, and yet it's kind of an honor to pay the penalty.
  11. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_transactions#Waivers I think it's only 3 days. The business about 7 is the obscure case where a team might DFA but not waive the player right away: since DFA has to be concluded within 10 days, they can't delay starting the waiver process for longer than 7 of those days.
  12. When Ray is mentioned, I always wheel out my memory of a game I listened to, shortly after moving to the Twin Cities, so it must have been in the late 70s or early 80s. Running play, starting deep in the Gophers' own territory. As he called the play, about 10 or 15 yards into the run, he thought to mention "no flags", then continued with a standard "to the fifty, the forty, the thirty...". It gave me chills as I realized what it meant: the last defender was in the runner's rearview mirror. And the play wasn't coming back. I wish I could remember to check for flags while a big play is still in progress - it would save a lot of disappointment. Ray remembered. And he would tell us. Two words can paint a picture.
  13. AY-ray AY-dree-an-zuh. Good one, though.
  14. PCL numbers for hitters always make me nervous.
  15. Barring some news out of spring training camp, Vielma's bat is not ready. It may never be ready, but he won't turn 23 until during the season, so he deserves more seasoning. I do want to watch him for signs that I've underestimated him.
  16. Nice in principle, but it's not the innings, it's the pitches. On a day the starting pitcher sucks, he's giving up hits on 3-1 counts, having to start over with the next batter. Yeah, let him approach 100 pitches, if the game's out of hand already and it saves the bullpen a little; but he might be at 90 by the end of 4 innings anyway, leaving a lot of work for the bullpen either way.
  17. I suppose Byron Buxton would bring a certain brand of athleticism to 1B as well.
  18. You get what you pay for. I guess.
  19. He counts as part of the case one can build against every front office in baseball. Which should make one stop and think before using him at all.

  21. Despite claims of large crowds in attendance at his rallies, scattered reports have come in that two fishes and five loaves of bread were sufficient to feed the entire gathering of folks at one of them.
