  1. I am curious, what outcome would you like from the moderators, at this point?
  2. Thanks for clarifying. My recollection is of letter grades in school, at least past the early elementary years, being based on achievement, not on exceeding expectations. Ditto, though not assigned by letter, when receiving performance reviews at work. I find it odd that when the front office was shopping any and all veteran spare parts before the trading deadline, no one apparently offered much for the A- and B+ relievers in this rundown. But if you're using a different system, that's fair, and so be it. Good for Kintzler - a C from me or a B+ from you equally means he is in line for another year's salary from someone.
  3. I guess I still don't understand the grading system. Is it relative to expectations going into the season? Because, a dumpster-dive bullpen is going to come out well by this method, and yet be a below average group. The AL had an average ERA of 3.84 from relievers, and only Kintzler and (barely) Pressly managed to excel this mark. Since relief is characterized by Small Sample Size, you kind of expect at least one guy will have an ERA under 3 - not so with our team. I guess Kintzler counts as our SSS Wonder. I usually like to factor advanced stats into my opinions, but when I watch Kintzler and Boshers, the eye-test tells me they have a ceiling of "grind it out". You hold your breath while watching them, I don't care what their results this year look like in the box scores. The younger guys still have a higher ceiling than that, but so far haven't produced. Had this relief crew been grafted intact onto some contending team's staff, they would have been slaughtered in the postseason. Maybe O'Rourke would have come in to strike out a lefty batter, in an otherwise unmemorable loss on the way to a sweep; but you don't build your bullpen around your LOOGY anyway. I give Kintzler and Pressly a C each, and successively lower grades for everyone else. For grading purposes, I'm sorry if someone was used improperly, but a bullpen with too many pitchers who can't function unless used optimally becomes unnecessarily hard to manage.
  4. Socialists can be bloggers. I seen it happen, on behalf of Bernie, all last year.
  5. Ah. Motorcycle. I seriously thought you meant bicycling in the Black Hills, making you some kind of iron man. Well, I suppose 600 miles from Ohio to MN on a bicycle in one day would be Lance Armstrong iron man territory, too.
  6. Two days on a bike on I90 would make driving in the Black Hills look pretty good, as well.
  7. I plan to take part in game threads. Problem. Solved. You're welcome.
  8. I'm a retired software developer, who lived in the Twin Cities for almost 20 years and have maintained my rooting interest for the Twins for an even longer period since then. I grew up in Indiana, have spent many years in the Pacific time zone and am now living in the Eastern time zone - I like my current home field, Fenway, but refuse to root very hard for the Sox as yet. The '87 and '91 WS teams coincided with my time in Minnesota and thrilled me to pieces. Hrbek personified that team for me. Top moments include when everything was on the line: Kirby Puckett circling the bases hollering a simple "yeah! yeah!" as he scored a walk-off run, Jack Morris coming out for a 10th inning, Dan Gladden taking second base on a routine-looking single to set up a winning run - I don't think I even have to tell any of you the particulars of these scenes. I'm a longtime SABR member, which reveals my analytical bent about as well as anything; yet as a member I have gravitated more toward the historical and biographical projects, and am merely a consumer of others' sabrmetric efforts. I think I stopped lurking on TD in 2012, so that puts me pretty close to when it started, doesn't it? It's a daily habit for me, despite frequent resolutions to cut down on the addiction (although the timestamp on this post reflects only torturous holiday travel back home). TD is moving toward being a community and not just a web site - I have enjoyed meeting some of the members in person.
  9. One of those ads looks like a Bad Idea to me. / The other is for a T-shirt company.
  10. What about Jorge Polanco for Jose De Leon, more or less straight up?
  11. It might be that 2B is on the borderline of being a true "up the middle" position where it can be a seller's market. Teams almost never have a genuine oversupply of starting pitching; it is hard to have an oversupply of good all-around catchers; ditto, shortstops; ditto, to a slightly lower degree, CF. But 2B? That's where teams move a SS who can't quite excel in the field, and there are a lot of such "tweener" guys. We're seeing that now with Polanco, who is slated to replace another such a guy in Dozier. Looked at league-wide, a team like the Dodgers can find other options if the cost of obtaining a particular one seems too high. Granting that Dozier had close to a monster year in 2016, and he's our best trade chip, 2B still isn't the position that pries away a haul of young controllable elite starting pitching. I'm hoping for an overpay, of course, if LA decides to go all-in for the World Series this season.
  12. Not a song, but I'm not starting a whole new thread either. Shakespeare play titles: Much Ado About Nothing
  13. No relation to Juan, I assume?
  14. Moderator's note: ChiTown's was not the only post in this thread containing double, or even triple, negatives leading me to wonder if the writer simply miscounted. When in doubt, just ask for clarification, without ascribing motives and without upping the wattage. Personally, I just move on.
  15. The latter ranks considerably lower on Degree of Difficulty. Good luck with your score from the judges.
  16. Moderator's note: This really starts to cross a line, on the part of everyone who is taking this tack (recognizing that it was not this post which introduced the phrasing). Please be respectful when posting. One way to help stay on the safe side of the line is to avoid making it be about the other person at all. But, especially, don't ever imply intentional dishonesty. Aside from that, are any new points being introduced? It may be time to put this tangent aside.
  17. Beatles concerto in four movements: The Long and Winding Road, Come Together, We Can Work It Out, Ticket To Ride / That's the optimistic version. Less hopefully: Don't Let Me Down, Tell Me Why, No Reply, Help!
  18. Saw it tonight with the family who are in town. It was filled with action but I somehow didn't find it terribly involving.
  19. Concur on the ditto, and ditto on the concurrence.
  20. Moderator's note: In the Holiday spirit, I'd like to suggest we all refrain from making things personal, and from taking things personally.
  21. Not at all. My reply was merely one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4cvM4zaUa4
  22. We traded him AGAIN? Ugh. This front office is no better than the last one.
  23. "But if I really say it, the radio won't play it." You couldn't get a lot past the CBS censors, nor radio, but put it sideways and the subversion sometimes slipped through.
  24. I've only seen this one in 2D but have heard good things about 3D version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SJY6w0HD50
  25. Carnac: "Julio Urias, Jose De Leon, Yadier Alvarez, and Clayton Kershaw." Ed: Julio Urias, Jose De Leon, Yadier Alvarez, and Clayton Kershaw. And what could these gentlemen possibly have in common, oh Great One? Carnac: Those are the names that come to me. Unless you have some information about Walker Buehler. Ed: I have no such information, Your Magnificence. Carnac: When exactly did you ever have any information? Ed: Only in your presence, Sir. We drink at the fount of your wisdom. Carnac: Fount? May the firehose of Internet Rumormongering fill your basement and damage your sump pump. Ed: Sage prognostication, oh Seer of Seers. Now, would you be so kind as to open the envelope? Carnac: "Name four pitchers who will serve on the Dodgers' welcoming committee for free agent Brian Dozier in 2019."
