  1. "Ah, but nothing personal, kid. It's a business." / "Kid? I turn 29 in a month."
  2. OK, my sincere apologies for sidetracking Bark's good question with what inadvertently turned into a Trekkie convention. Morricone made a real impact on Tarantino's H8ful Eight. For a certain kind of movie, he's the guy. Typically I end up seeing several of the nominees for Best Picture in a given year. But, as I look back at the list of Best Original Score winners through the years, it seems that I hardly ever see them. Lion King way back in 1994 might be the most recent that I saw before 2015 (and Zimmer was indeed awesome there). The Disney animated features had a real run at that time, with Menken doing such good work too. Moving down slightly to "just" the nominees for Best Score, I have seen a smattering of them, but I must confess that I don't recall the scores in Interstellar, Her, Argo, War Horse, and so on. I enjoyed the movies, and a good score will aid in that in ways one might not notice. Oh, and my initial response about La La Land, while tongue in cheek, was sincere. I may have already said: I don't remember the last time I came out of a theater having so thoroughly enjoyed a movie. Snippets from it run around in my head, weeks later. Hey, an odd parallel - the complex percussion in Another Day Of Sun reminds me of the drum beats in Lion King.
  3. No. If Masterpiece Theater ever decided they needed a new theme song, THAT would be a better fit.
  4. Great picture. LOL, Breslow at around 6'0" looks like Freddie Patek next to these guys.
  5. Apology accepted (not that you really had to), and it still could be a recipe for disaster just as you said.
  6. For me, Hughes is the key. If he's not healthy, he's a non-factor of course, and that has been my assumption since he went onto the DL. You can have a rotation of ESan, May, Berrios, Gibson and Santiago, and then all the other candidates slot into the major league bullpen or else the rotation at Rochester. But if healthy, there's a logjam and he's the cause. Someone like Berrios will be doing time at Rochester, and that means an old guy is blocking a young guy who needs to be up, despite all the protests that it would never come to that. A trade can eventually fix the logjam, if it pans out that way - and I certainly don't wish Hughes ill - but it will be an uncomfortable couple of months while Hughes demonstrates his health well enough that someone will trade for him. And worst case (a middle scenario), Hughes guts it out for a couple of months but is never quite right, and the time invested in him instead of a youngster is wasted.
  7. (1-44), as my son went on to post on Facebook today.
  8. It's well attuned to the subject matter of the movie, IMO. The Star Trek TMP opening credits theme isn't entirely bad, actually - decent tune, wrong movie. Maybe it should've been the coronation march for a medieval drama. (Actually, I'm having a hard time pinpointing the appropriate time period, but in any case for me it was more of a regal march than an uplifting trip to the stars.)
  9. Not to get off onto a tangent, but that is a very old and out of date notion. Nevada has no state lottery (which many states use to fund education), thanks to casino lobbying against it. Also, gambling is widespread now and other states have sucked the life out of Nevada's one-time financial advantage. Funding of a state government is complicated, and Nevada does their's differently than most, but it's not accurate to think Nevada's schools are well funded. I have no reason to trust or distrust the following link, which places Nevada 45th among states for per-student funding for 2014, except that it's in line with what I always heard: Nevada is ranked low in the things you want to be ranked high in, and ranked high in the things you want to be ranked low in. http://www.governing.com/gov-data/education-data/state-education-spending-per-pupil-data.html I don't know how to account for our good experience with the teachers. And yet, it was real.
  10. Our three kids had uniformly good experience with public schools and the teachers therein, in both Minnesota and (low tax) Nevada. I saw nothing that looked so broken that the system needed to be upended.
  11. I think, in fact, an interesting question might be who makes you cringe, or consider avoiding the movie if you see who was involved with the score. I don't really have a candidate in mind. I detested the pompous theme for the initial Star Trek TOS movie, and that was Goldsmith, right? But I don't want to generalize from just one film, and he's done so much.
  12. Did you enjoy La La Land? It had music, I believe.
  13. It's a fair quote from BJ. Easy enough to find references to it, e.g. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:XzegrdxfwVQJ:www.scout.com/mlb/tigers/story/812138-tigstown-analysis-minor-league-starters-fip+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us Which is good enough for me. Still, the context of what he said was in thinking about BABIP. If most of pitching were really defense, you'd have teams with the best defenders result in pitching staffs with similar ERAs (or FIPs) to each other. Instead, not every LA Dodger is a Clayton Kershaw clone. James's "Much" is not nearly "Half".
  14. I think this mischaracterizes what an analytics professional does, in the face of dozens of components.
  15. Uhhh, and in the common idiom, this is seen as a good thing, or a bad thing?
  16. Textbook example of a push poll. "12. Were you aware that a poll was released revealing that a majority of Americans actually supported President Trump's temporary restriction executive order?" 'A' poll. Heh. "22. Do you believe that if Republicans were obstructing Obama like Democrats are doing to President Trump, the mainstream media would attack Republicans?" Um, if I say "yes" it means what? If I say "no", it means what? Either way, I apparently accept the premise, as opposed to Democrats perhaps calling for scrutiny? Oh, plus, they want name and email address. Legitimate poll, obviously. Thanks for the good chuckle.
  17. Haley had a successful half-season (14 starts) in Pawtucket in 2016.
  18. Since this has a Fantasy Draft feel to it, I'd go with "Commissioners". At least, that's the term used in the League I am familiar with.
  19. What about the rest?
  20. But the vast majority of what people think of as being pitching is actually pitching.
  21. Working against Buxton hitting for high average would be if my memory is correct that after his most recent callup he was aggressively swinging for the fences almost all the time. With some success, I hasten to add.
  22. Pretty much all any of us is asking for.
  23. To be an innings eater you first have to be able to get out of the fourth inning against major league hitters on a consistent basis. Is Haley that guy?
  24. The good news is, the adventures Race and Jade used to take part in would bring Steve Bannon to a quick cardiac arrest.
