  1. I've been as guilty as anyone in exploring a tangent or two here, but this is Ex-Twins in the Box Scores. Do you mind if I split this one off, as a thread of its own (probably in Sports Bar)? Or, if Cut'n'paste is easy for you, just start one yourself?
  2. It's something to build on, although the Southern League is a much tougher summit to scale.
  3. Well of course I'm hoping for results too. The process doesn't seem meaningless to me.
  4. Yeah, I had to look them up this morning - top 40ish, pre-season ranking. Not a pushover team, apparently. I'd still prefer a more convincing win before getting too excited, but a win's a win at this stage.
  5. You will search in vain for much defense of Grossman from these quarters. Although, Replacement Level doesn't mean, cut summarily from the roster. It just means, don't get too worked up, one way or another. If we didn't have Grossman, we'd have Palka. If we didn't have Palka, we'd have Brian O'Grady from the Reds, or any of several clones. Johnny Field probably comes to mind, too, on a different scale of fungibility - tweener CF glove, weak bat. Anybody a step up from these guys... that's what is scarce. Palka's not scarce, is my point.
  6. You're referring to the news that Ervin Santana is now definitely out for the rest of the season?
  7. Not to pile on, but Palka's .757 OPS in the majors, with barely adequate defense in one of the corner outfield positions, could easily be matched or exceeded by any of the 30 or so guys who are OPSing above .900 at AAA. A lot of these guys are age 25 or above, so they're not all hot prospects who couldn't be pried away. They wouldn't be better. But they wouldn't be worse. And you could stick nearly anybody, such as these guys, in right or left and get what Palka brings you on defense - not to mention the games Palka DHs. Palka. Could. Be. Replaced. At. Little. Cost. So he's replacement level, unless and until he finds a way to step up some aspect of his game.
  8. I see that Caleb Hamilton has started 3 straight games for the Miracle. Is Rortvedt dinged up, or is the manager going with who he sees as the hot bat?
  9. Looks like I picked the wrong game to give up snark.
  10. How... old... are... you? http://www.nndb.com/people/374/000022308/geneface.jpg
  11. Maybe I scanned too quickly and missed mention, but I'd be interested to know in what ways the new FO has put any kind of stamp on the day-to-day nuts and bolts of developing the young talent they acquire.
  12. ... remembers the Alamo, from the newspaper headlines.
  13. Who had Bill Daily, of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Newhart" renown? He had just turned 91.
  14. None of us is. Although, Chief has kind of leveled out by now.
  15. He might be a late-bloomer. Not much in his minor-league progression suggested this kind of performance, until his second half at AAA last year. I'm prepared to write off highs (or lows) like that as outliers, and his AAA performance this year was back in line with previous performance not suggesting any kind of lengthy major league career, but then his major league performance has been back up in outlier-land. Color me skeptical but willing to let this play out (unless we could sell high, and get something really valuable). As for defense, his glove will always make me nervous in center, but now I'm being a broken record again. Fourth outfielder sounds about right.
  16. "But"? Don't you mean, "and"? Law and order has always been one of the biggest dog whistles out there. Nixon exploited it to perfection, but he was hardly the first, nor the last.
  17. He LIKES New Orleans. http://politicalhat.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/blazing-saddles-rape.jpg
  18. He should have posted that one earlier in the game when the score was still tide.
  19. Nice comeback by the Twins to tie it up. Too bad no one is left to have witnessed it. I bet, though, that when we give up some more runs, there will be additional commentary on the failings of the system. G'night, all.
  20. Yes, I can see results, same as you. But the worth of a player comes from the succession of (meaningful) decisions and mechanical actions taken. Those on offense outnumber those on defense. Look, a simple back of the envelope calculation tells you that defense can't outweigh offense from a position player. Offense and defense are basically two sides of the same coin - on offense, you are roughly 1/9 of the team contribution, while on defense you are 1/9 of balls put in play. Up-the-middle positions get more than the share of other defenders, but the pitcher's impact on the game soaks up way too much of the defensive side of this coin.
